They read cherry-picked scriptures from their own biased translation, and are instructed beforehand what to think about the scripture that is going to be read and this is then later reinforced by asking questions and having the student come with the answer he learned rather than what he might really think. Pretty soon the student is trained not to think but to eat absent-minded from the great spiritual banquet provided by the WTS. Et voila, another mindless cult zombie is born.

How are Bible Studies Conducted?
by Band on the Run ini never found a victim and then i was out.
may i ask you how it felt to have the umbrage to go to someone's house, bring a bible, and witness lit, and teach another person about the bible.
the witness lit was always so dorky.

I saw the same thing in assembly halls in Spain a few years ago.. made me wonder. They probably think that name looks better in the media and in politics.. "See, we are just another christian group, nothing weird about us!"

Apostates Shut the door of everlasting life in Men's Faces
by mankkeli ini was discussing with an elder today, and as usual the conversation drifted towards apostates and their line of reasoning, he angrily looked into my eyes with the scriptures in his hand and told me:.
(1) that apostates are destructive peddlers who shut the door of everlasting life on people as they are very sure they have no portion in there.
he quoted matt 23:13- 13 woe to you, scribes and pharisees, hypocrites!

Shutting the door on everlasting life is like shutting the door on christmas.. it's not real folks! I don't feel guilty for shutting the door on a fairytale.
You could have asked him how he knows that the FDS was chosen. Then go to 1919 and ask him what kind of doctrine was so special compared to the other religions at the time. Then ask him if the doctrine was good enough for Jesus in 1919, why would you get disfellowshipped for following that same doctrine in 2011. Then you can call up the faithful and discreet slave text and mention how they are supposed to be waiting for Jesus when he came. Then ask him how they could be waiting when they thought he was already present since 1874.
You could have shown him how Jesus taught his apostles to remember him by passing the bread and wine. Then ask him where the respectful bystanders are, the so-called great crowd. Top it off with a nice "great crowd in heaven" scripture.

Jesus is invisibly ruling!
by life is to short ini was thinking about a thread of terry's and how the whole concept of jesus is ruling right now only he is invisible sounds like a crazy person is speaking.
yet this is one of the major religious teachings of jw's.
one that we were expected to explain to strangers by coming uninvited to their doors.

JW - Have you been attending the meetings?
Me - Attending.. attending.. I would like to use the term parousia.. I was present at the meetings, just like Jesus is ruling from heaven
JW - So you didn't go?
Me - Are you saying Jesus is not ruling?

Do Jehovah's Witnesses love their enemies?
by Terry inmatthew 5:43-48new international version (niv).
43 you have heard that it was said, love your neighborand hate your enemy.
44 but i tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your father in heaven.

Well let's see. The most important enemy (besides satan) are of course apostates. What does the WTS say about apostates? Do they love us?
Watchtower 1993 November 1 p.19
"True Christians share Jehovah's feelings toward such apostates; they are not curious about apostate ideas. On the contrary, they "feel a loathing" toward those who have made themselves God's enemies, but they leave it to Jehovah to execute vengeance."Watchtower 1992 July 15 pp.12-13 Christ Hated Lawlessness-Do You?
"The obligation to hate lawlessness also applies to all activity by apostates. Our attitude toward apostates should be that of David, who declared: "Do I not hate those who are intensely hating you?"Watchtower 1985 July 15 p.31
"Such ones [apostates] willfully abandoning the Christian congregation thereby become part of the 'antichrist.' (1 John 2:18, 19)"BTW I never realized that I am now the antichrist! Awesome!
To summarize, they hate and loath us and they want to kill us but they leave that to the big J.

Solving the origins of life
by botchtowersociety inso what came first, metabolism or replication?
looks like both....at the same time.. evolving proteins..... first life: the search for the first replicatorlife must have begun with a simple molecule that could reproduce itself and now we think we know how to make one.
4 billion years before present: the surface of a newly formed planet around a medium-sized star is beginning to cool down.

I agree BTS, panspermia always sounded farfetched to me and just moves the problem to another planet. But since nucleobases were found on a meteorite, the necessary conditions to form nucleobases must have existed somewhere else as well. It shows that many complex molecules can form spontaneously under many circumstances, even away from earth.

PS: Are you referring to the hypothesis of panspermia?

God exists? God doesn't? God is a different concept? Convince me!
by punkofnice ini am in a spiritual void at the moment after a year out of the borg and 50 years in.. i'd like to hear 'brief' evidence for the existance or non existance of god/s without an argument between members here.. i'd like to get fresh view points as mine is now so critical it's telling me to be an agnostic or atheist.
why?
i am in want of evidence, not just words from a copy/paste troll & no links.. i just want to open up to new possibilities but with evidence to support it not just 'faith'..

Think of other things you believe in. You believe in the sun rising in the morning. You believe that pressing the submit button here at JWN usually results in generating a new post. You believe that when you turn the key in your car, it will start. You believe that when you jump, you'll fall back down to the ground again.
Why do you believe in those things? Because you're convinced by the evidence that they exist. And most you have even personally experienced.
Now think of things you don't believe in. You don't believe in the easter bunny. You don't believe in monsters living under your bed when you go to sleep at night. You don't believe that somewhere on the far side of the moon there is a secret special disney space world where everything is free.
Why don't you believe in those things? Because there is no evidence for them.
Now think about God. Is there any evidence for the existence of God? There isn't. Therefore, don't believe in God.

Very interesting.
What's also interesting is that nucleobases, the molecules that make up RNA and DNA have been crashing into the earth on meteorites 4.6 billion years ago.
