I seem to remember it being quoted. Quoted enough that I remember it being quoted. Without a NWT in front of me though, I think it read a little differently. Something like "those excercising faith in him would not perish, but receive everlasting life". Just reworded a bit so that when you read it, it sort of changes a bit to fit into their doctrine.

Stumbling on John 3:16
by Beans infrom what i can tell having searched the watchtower site and discs there seems to be no reference to this scripture as it goes against the teachings of the watchtower.
when the two sisters came to my door and i brought up the topic they were stumbled and on another jw web site the question was asked if there was anywhere in the bible where it says that other than gods chosen people could they be saved the jw's did not accept this scripture as well.. does is not seem odd that as one of the scriptures avoided by the watchtower, it is so avoided that it has never sunk into there brains to have any meaning!.

"Bring me a toga..."
by logansrun inany speculation as to why ct russel requested to be wrapped in a toga on that fateful haloween night in 1916 -- his deathbed?
could it be he felt his physical body would be raptured to heaven and that he should have "clean, pure, white" garments?.
comments?.

The word toga means a covering garment (white robe). It was the official robe of higher magistrates, priests and of persons discharging vows, and was worn on special occasions, such as celebrating a triumph.
Toga shares a common root with the latin word for roof (as in a covering). Actually a toga was the official dress of every Roman citizen and worn all the time. Non-citizens were not permitted to wear a toga.
Average citizens wore plain, unadorned togas that were more the color of natural wool (beige or brown). Only election candidates wore chalk-bleached white togas. That's how they let people in the forum know they were running for office.
The togas of magistrates, children, and unwed girls were lined with a "purple" band. Purple wasn't really purple, but anything from pink to dark mauve.
Other, all-"purple" togas were for censors. Some togas were lined with gold for ceremonies.
The above was summarized from "Daily Life in Ancient Rome", Chapter 15 (Clothing, finery, and bathing) by Florence Dupont.
So, the all white toga was not an official robe of magistrates. A beige or brown one with a "purple" band would be. The all-white one was for candidates. But then again, what did CT ever know about history?

Jehovah's Witnesses reorganize printing operations

So, what could the real reason for this "reorganisation" be? I wonder???!!!!
Over the last couple of years, the management of the oganization has been taken away from the Governing Body and given to a board of directors. While the Governing Body was probably more sentimental about the Brooklyn location, the newer, younger people in charge of managing things are probably less attached and more business savy. Upgrading machinery, cutting workforce, it all makes good business sense. As well as farming out printing to other areas of the globe to make it available faster, take advantage of a lower cost of doing business, and save on shipping. Whether or not the organization has profit as a bottom line, any non-profit organization should be implementing cost-cutting measures.
And Willyoman's observation about their duplicity with regard to their role in society at large and their circulation claims is also dead-on. Mountains upon mountains of Watchtowers and Awake! magazine are throwaways.. a tragic squandering of resources.
Yeah, think of all God's trees that were cut down to print that much paper. Talk about those ruining the earth!!! Why not publish them in PDF on the web? Even for a download fee? They could say it's for bandwidth if they want to. Oh, but that would be selling and potentially taxable.

I don't understand why actors can't just be actors. Do what you enjoy to do, let us enjoy watching your movies, then shut the hell up!
Everyone can form their own opinions and speak them. I also think the US overreacted when France wouldn't support the mess in Iraq. And in hindsight, it looks to me like the French were right. Why was it we went to war? Becaus Iraq had WOMD? Still can't find any? Well, then it was to "liberate Iraq". And now we're sure we'll "find evidence of WOMD programs " (different from finding actual weapons - who's the weasel now?). Seems all France was saying was let the UN weapons inspectors do their job. So what? They didn't agree. Did we need a national wave of anti-French racism?
As for actors, I think Schwarzenegger should stick with acting and not run for CA govenor. Maybe Reagan should have stuck to acting too. Or is it OK when the actors are conservatives and goose step with the GOP?

Trekkies will not inherit the kingdom of God....
by drwtsn32 inthis is hilarious!
i am so surprised that the society has counsel on learning the klingon language.

Hey, it might come in handy if they ever try to pass out watchtowers and awakes outside of a Star Trek convention. And what if their speaking Klingon actually impresses some Trekkie and the Trekkie actually listens to them?
Some people are even working on translating the Bible into Klingon.

As a witness did you secretly celebrate holidays?
by Dimples inwhen i was a witness i knew of many who would either celebrate certain holidays in secret or make up for them some other way.
such as, family day ( christmas ) costume parties ( halloween ), i even knew several who made it a point to go see the fireworks on the 4th of july.
my mother told a wife of an elder that she always felt weird on mother's day for not sending a card to her mom, because her mom expected one.

My parents took us to see fireworks every July 4th when we were kids. But, just to see the fireworks. We weren't supposed to feel patriotic or anything. And I don't think there was a problem with that at the hall because other kids at the hall went too. And I was never told not to tell anybody I had gone.
And, we usually had a turkey on or around Thanksgiving, usually with my sister over and her family over. Because turkey was cheap (not that other meat wasn't, but for variety at a bargain), and we had the day off. What spoiled it was having to go to meeting that night.
Other than that, never really missed birthdays, but other worldly friends felt sorry for me and my brother and started celebrating them for us. We didn't complain.
Costumes and Halloween looked fun. We secretly bought costumes to go to bars all dressed up or party down State St. in Madison Wisconsin. It was a blast.
We also got involved in x-mas exchanges at work.
Depending on the moment, we sometimes felt guilty. And sometimes we participated in a way so as not to damage the conscience too much. Like justifying Halloween as not celebrating it, just doing a costume thing. OK, so our conscience was clear over Halloween, never mind all the drinking and wild behavior.

Sep Km 2003 - Reduce labor?
by truthseeker in"god kept making it grow.
" how thrilling it has been to see the growth in the united states field!.
during the 2003 service year, over 70,000 new bible studies were started.

As far as the book printing work being distributed to other countries...even WT can see the benefit of cheap 3rd world labor. I'm certain it's much cheaper to house 100 bethelites in Nairobi, Kenya, than in Brooklyn Heights.
Not to mention cheaper distribution if you don't have to send it over an ocean.
Wonder if all these goot business moves are simply coming from the reorg at the top. Seperating the gov body from running the business.

I don't get it I was 19 and 21 with two babies and never ever ever thougth of leaving in the car I also would NEVER leave my grandbaby for a second.
I guess when it's not your kids, people aren't as respoonsible.
This is shocking. After the last daycare incident, you'd think ALL daycares (especially in DFW) would have implemented some sort of procedures to guard against this. I think the whole daycare should be held responsible.
One more reason I'm glad my babies are staying home and only travelling with their parents.

Has anyone given up love for the organization?
by Victorian sky inhi all, just wondering how many have given up the man or woman they love for the borg?
i know it's a painful subject for some.
i gave up my first love when i was studying.

I don't think I'd call it love, but I once broke up with a really nice "worldy" girl I had been dating for several months because I had met a JW girl and we had a mutual attraction. And, being mostly a JW at the time, "knew" that eventually I'd have to settle down with a JW girl. Luckily that didn't last. I tried to get back with the first girl, but I had hurt her and there was no going back.

Why don't they preach on TV or Radio?
by JH inwe all know that witnesses go door to door in order to give bible studies.
but since their message is so important to them, why don't they use all the available methods in order to reach out to the most people possible.
we live in an era of telecommunications, wireless phones, internet, and so on.

Oops... before someone says jws don't have to pay for the mags.... I know they don't pay a specific amount, but they are expected to donate for them, and turn in any donations they receive for the mags. Bottom line: the society gets their money.
I think Randy Watters had something about this in one of his newsletters. The way I remember it, the congregation is billed for the literature, just not the individual publishers. If the publishers don't donate enough to cover the costs, the congregation takes a financial hit. If the don't pay up, the Society threatens to cut off literature shipments.
I think that's the sort of accounting mentality that almost drove the company I work for into the dirt with it's former ex-accountant CEO. Our old CEO wanted to cut out anything that didn't have a measurable benefit to the bottom line, ignoring the "getting your name out there" effects.
With the WTBTS, they don't do subscriptions anymore. They almost force congregations to cut back on their literature orders in fear of ordering too much that the publishers can't pay for. In turn smaller literature orders means they don't have leftovers to just leave around anymore. Literature becomes something you want to use very judiciously. It's a downward spiral that could severely limit their growth potential. I think that's good, but bad business sense for them.
