hey there, gang.. i'm haulin oats.

i came to full awareness recently after finding a work-mate who also had "seen the light" finally.. i was born/raised a jw, having made some pretty big sacrifices in the name of the organization, even moving to where the need was greater before the start of high school.

needless to say, small mid-west farm towns don't look too highly on jw's.

It's quite a story you have. I'm lucky that I've never had to throw out music, though admittedly, I never chose much of anything that would've gotten me into hot water. It's only in the past three or so years that I've started finding music I really liked, regardless of what other ppl might think. What I like to listen to would shock a lot of good ol' x-ian folks out there. LOL!

I live up here in British Columbia, Canada; practically right on top of ya. There are actually a good handful of us BCers here on JWN. Just come up north of the 49th and say 'hey'.

What Draws You to a Poster?

for me, it's warmth and compassion, being approachable, and not looking down on anyone.. also, taking the time to acknowledge and interact with newbies.. i love those type of posters.. syl.

I'm drawn to posters who show kindness, empathy, warmth, humour and sincerity in any combination.

What especially draws me to someone is if there's something we have in common and a then friendly exchange ensues. It's an easy enough way to make friends here.

my wife and i are thinking of moving our family to a better place in the us....away from jw family and out of the southern bible belt.

just curious how many of you live around co and, more specifically, near fort collins?

of course, we're open to any city that is less conservative and has awesome summer weather and outdoor activities.

You could come to Canada. Despite what the ridiculous stories say, it's not all frozen waste up here. Plenty of civilization as well a plenty of space. Lotsa mountains here in the west too. It's a wonderland IMHO.

You're welcome to come as long as you can leave behind the trashier aspects of the American mindset...

de-convert feels extremely sad, a sense of loss and remorse, struggling to cope with a worldview without a personal deity.

I'm ping-ponging between Anger and Indifference. I don't see the point in trying to de-covert others; "you can lead a horse to water but......". I can only try to tell outsiders what being a JW is really about in hopes spreading the word and preventing other tragedies. I do feel resigned to the fact that I can't change other ppl's minds as they have to figure things out for themselves. I also don't see the point of getting Exasperated. I refuse to step into the camp of militant atheistism at all, though. It's something I'll never be able to stomach...

Are you still on your local congregation's radar because of out of town family?

over a couple of years ago, i did a relatively quick fade, having dropped fs and then meetings cold turkey with the space of a few months.

sure there was a bit of harassment and stalking for a while but it soon petered out as my wish to be left alone became know among the locals.

admittedly i stretched things out a little bit longer by going to meetings and conventions when i visited family in their towns for about another year after but now i'm completely "clean" as it were.

It's quite interesting, isn't it, how JWs try to fake a caring attitude but fail so miserably at it because they can't hide their dismay and disgust for the paths we choose that are different from what they want us to take. It really is hard not to talk about the 'elephant in the room' even though it looms larger than almost anything. It really is best to avoid talking about religion.

You really are luckier than most (and I'm sure you know it). The WTS and the GB that controls it wouldn't be the monstrosities they are today if more ppl would chose their families over what some stodgy, corrupt old men in an ivory tower have to say...

I feel bad for you because of your having to take such drastic measures. I'm sure it is all quite necessary though. If worst comes to worst, a toxic family must be put aside and firm boundaries must be put in place. Any gestapo that come around must be firmly dealt with as well.

this is one subject that really annoyed me when i was a jehovah's witness - and i find it still annoys me after being out 7 years from the jw's.

the title of this jw only wt study article is " have regard for those who are working hard among you ".

in my opinion there always seemed to be a double standard in which rank and file publishers were always told to be patient with elders shortcomings - however if rank and file publishers slipped up - elders would be into admonishing and disciplining them like flies attracted to dung with no delay.

I would have no issue with any Elder's "imperfection" in of itself. What I have a problem with is the lack of accountability AND this lack of accountability runs rampant among the ranks of any group who claim to be appointed representatives of God himself. What makes things even worse is that they're mostly untrained, incompetent, arrogant, perverted and tyrannical. Did I miss anything?
