Have they ever had these so-called "Special Conventions" where the need ($$$) is great (like Haiti, Ethiopia or Zimbabwe)???

Draconian Rules for Attending "Special Convention"
by BluesBrother inbritish dubs are invited to attend a special convention next summer in dublin , irish republic.
o k, this kind of trip has been done many times before.
however i have never seen such a crude and rigid set of rules that would apply to their own people going on a trip, at their own expense of course.

3 possible reasons come to mind
- he was hoping that things would change eventually
- he needed a clean exit strategy... quitting cold turkey was not the right way to do that
- he was still programmed (it takes sometimes several years to deprogram

The Purpose Of The Circuit Assembly, Is To Show How Much More We Can Do, or How Little We Do?
by Bubblegum Apotheosis inwhy is it, the c.a.s are not upbuiling, and the whole bible is replaced with, "how to do more for jehovah!

designs... very fitting metophor.... on the other hand, the cookie monster does tend to drop the entire cookie on the floor as he crazily munches away... the WT would never drop one red cent!

The last few CA's I attended, JWs looked less happy and there were a lot less hugs and kisses... it just seemed as if everyone was simply going through the motions or wondering if Armageddon was indeed "just around the corner" or not...

My 18-yr old college freshman nephew has just been cut off for leaving the JWs...
by Alfred ini spoke about him in a previous thread... he's the nicest kid you'll ever meet... smart, humble, shows respect and is very kind to everyone around him... except for one minor thing... you guessed it... he no longer believes in the jw religion.
also, he feels it is simply a place for hopeless people to gather and give each other moral support without actually doing anything productive to better their lives... i won't get into the details on how he arrived at this conclusion... suffice to say, he did not want to be a part of this crowd any longer.. incredibly, when he was a lot younger, he was able to convince his jw father (a po) and his jw mother (my sister) that they should let him go to college when he turns 18 (and help him pay for it!!!).
so they started putting some money away and my nephew has been in college since september!.

Thanks everyone for your supportive comments and suggestions...
Wasanelder... You're right... and he does support himself by working at a hardware store (and I also found out that he now has a room mate... an ex-JW also! ... so his rent is now cut in half)
New Chapter and Toth... Thanks for sharing your sentiments. Believe me, he has no intentions of ever dropping out. If anything, this whole situation has made him even more determined not to fail.
Breakfast... I swear he must be lurking on this site... I texted him some of the suggestions from this thread, but he had already visited his college's financial aid office and will soon be getting an additional $6,700 on a student loan.
Wisdom and Band On the Run... You're right... He realizes that the best choice financially would have been to fade much later on and stay at home but he simply couldn't put up with all the ridiculous restrictions... he now feels like a caged bird that has just been set free, so I doubt he'll ever consider moving back or going back to meetings... ain't gonna happen...
Billy... Thanks... excellent suggestion! ... but I think he'll probably require about 3 more years of deprogramming before considering military service.
Scully... thanks for your insight and support!... I'm on top of it... I do intend to help him financially, but only if/when he is on the brink of going broke... I think the worst thing I can do right now is help him prematurely... there's nothing like having a sense of pride that comes from knowing you put yourself through college with help from no one... I'd really like him to feel that satisfaction... if he fails, I'll be there for him... but this kid is determined... something tells me I won't need to send him a dime (until he graduates)
Jamie... Thanks!!! that would be most appreciated.
Flipper... I will ... thanks!
Thanks to everyone else as well... just a note to clarify... his parents were only helping him pay for college... the portion that he simply couldn't cover... but with the student loan he applied for yesterday, he has bought himself some time... thanks again!!!

Blacksheep... it most certainly will be a nightmare, but he'll make it... he's very focused and determined not to fail...
In fairness to my sister, she's just going along with whatever my arrogant, self-centered brother-in-law decides... about 8 months ago, this prick had the audacity to tell me that my "attitude is described in the elders manual".... wtf?

Incredibly, when he was a lot younger, he was able to convince his JW father (a PO) and his JW mother (my sister) that they should let him go to college when he turns 18 (and help him pay for it!!!). So they started putting some money away and my nephew has been in college since September!
However, he recently stopped going to meetings and moved out of the house about a month ago. When this happened, I thought: "Oh no... It's just a matter of time before they cut him off!"... well, sure sh*t, I just got this text message from him last night:
"I've just been cut off. What kind of parents won't help u pay for college? It's ridiculous. There should be a law against this."
So the rug has just been pulled out from under him after just one semester and he's on the fence on what to do next. I'll spare you the rest of the text messages that went back and forth, but I'm sure this experience will make him a much better and stronger person, able to deal with real life situations with no WT filter clouding his judgment. He did promise me he would download "Crisis of Conscience" today and start reading it as soon as possible.
I'll keep you updated on his reaction to the book...
