They're so big on calling it a church for the same reason that they're so big on all the other jargon - they use "in group" language to seperate themselves from outsiders. And they also update the language every so often so that people can't just drift back in like nothing happened after they leave for awhile.

"New Light" on "New Light" creates a dilemma (July 15, 2010 WT)
by pirata infor the majority of my years in the truth, the "new light" did not bother me at all.. i reasoned this way: "the faithful slave is imperfect, right?
logically they're going to make mistakes.
the main thing is that they're trying to do god's will they best they can and stick as close to the bible as they understand it.

What's really funny is that only one of the passages they cite has ANYTHING to do with what they're claiming.

Not quite a music video, BUT this describes the several years before I could go through a day without feeling like I wanted to jump out of my own skin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h06m9n__H_I
Not made for these times
This is the end my friend
I wasn't made for these times
(and) I want to fly away
To a simpler time
To a better day
Who am I to believe in?
Who are you to believe in me?
(I'm just) a junkie, a drunkard
A bastard, a monster
Hiding from my sins
A broken prophet
From a dead end street
But we live in such terrible times
I gotta speak my mind
'cause inhumanity is all I see
It's right in front of you
It's right in front of me
I testify 'cause I'm damned if I lie but...
Who I to believe in?
Who are you to believe in me?
I wasn't made for these times
And sometimes I'd like to
Tear out my eyes
And be blind
To this world that I seeThis is the end my friend
I wasn't made for these times
(and) I want to fly away
To a simpler time
To a better day -

Percentage of publishers that are baptized?
by Gayle inand how old does a "publisher" (one that turns in a 'report') have to be?
i forget how that works.. most churches require their members to be baptized to be counted.
but jws count publishers, though maybe not baptized, so that would be a lot of their children.. i do see the percentage of jws baptisms are clearly decreasing, though their "publishers" percentage they claim are increasing..

How the hell do 276,000 people get baptised in once year? That would average out to 756 people a day.

Why do some expect the WTS to one day end? It's simply not going to happen folks........
by jambon1 inin my anger as an ex witness about 4 years ago i really wished that this would happen.
although the glaring errors, hypocrisy & downright badness of the wts was finally evident to me personally, others whom i had expeced to eventually leave the org have not.. i think it dawned on me around 1 or 2 years ago that my wife will never leave the witnesses.
having presented in both heated & reasonable debate every kind of logical argument against the religions teachings the conversations would get to the point where she would simply refuse to answer my questions.

The Catholic Church hasn't disbanded because most people are able to ignore the stuff they disagree with. It's a much lower-pressure group.

I've never pissed one off, but I shut one down once.
I was in my dad's truck, and we had his dog, Jack, in the bed of the truck.
My dad was talking about how "we don't use independent thought."
Me: Dad, you know that when you refuse to use independent thought, you're willfuly rejecting the thing that Jehovah gave you to seperate you from the animals, and making yourself more and more like Jack, right? He didn't give you the ability to reason to mock you. He gave it to you to use.
Dad: -dead silence-

The Dawkins Delusion
by brotherdan inso, i recently finished reading "the god delusion" by richard dawkins.
i read it with a certain amount of hesitation.
after all, i am still recovering from my disappointment at realizing that the wts is not god's organization.

I have a question for the people who keep insisting that religions require faith - have any of you read anything by authors such as Aquinas or Nagarjuna, or anyone else who puts forward a wel-developed, well-reasoned defense of a religious system? You might disagree with them, but I don't see how it's reasonable to say that they require faith when they spend hundreds of pages supplying logical defenses of their beliefs.

New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures...
by Joliette inif i'm not mistaken, werent the committee of brothers who translated this bible: nathan knorr, albert scheoder, george gangas, fredrick franz.
wasnt fredrick franz the only scholarly person (or somewhat scholarly) person who was 'somewhat qualified' to translate any type of biblical greek, hebrew, etc?.

He was probably quite smart to avoid trying to translate it on the stand. ... Translators don't just crap out finished products that they publish. Any good translation takes time, and anyone who tried to translate something ad hoc like that would leave questionable areas in the translations, which the lawyers would tear apart.
Have any of y'all ever actually seen a good lawyer in action? They can trip up anyone more easily than you'd imagine.

'Unbiased' Study Bible or Commentary Recommendations?
by pirata inare there any commentaries or study bibles that anyone can recommend?
i'm not sure if it's possible to be 100% unbiased, but looking for something that tries to keep theological speculation, or scripture bending to fit theology, to a minumum.. esv study bible was referenced in another thread, but the description says it is "evangelical".
not sure if that indicates a theological bias or not..

The Jerusalem Bible is pretty good. When I took a history of early Christianity class, that's what we used (and my professor was apparently a disgruntled ex-catholic, so his choice of that bible seems to attest to its quality.)
