Here's a saying that can clear the clutter:
"The natural language of god is silence. Everything else is just a bad translation."
ok, to start, i no longer believe the scriptures are inspired.
may be some writers were influenced but that does not mean all what they wrote was correct.
does this mean there is no creator?
Here's a saying that can clear the clutter:
"The natural language of god is silence. Everything else is just a bad translation."
this is what my children tell me... get over the whole jehovah's witness thing!
yes, they tell me they have gotten over the whole thing and they tell me that and i need to also.
my exgirl friend who was raised as a jw also has said the same thing.. my children say they got over it, however they are quick to point out how messed up their lives are now because of no college education and other missed opportunities.
I got over it as soon as my wife and I, in our early 20's moved away from the small community I served in........ one of those places that was in need of a pioneer and public speaker..... etc. And someone that could serve in a variety of positions.
After reading Eric Hoppers book The True Believer at age 16-17 I had no respect for the Society as every trick they used to build their religion was in Hoffer's book. By the way he never mentioned the JW's or their Corporate overlords. He was writing about larger organizations like the Communists, the Catholic church and the new Christy Christians and cults that were starting to capture attention. You read Hoffer you learn every trick these blindsided corporate structures used.
I did like the friends as my wife and I were raised in the religion from our early teens .
In that day 1963 , 64, 65, you could just leave and no one had to shun you......... in particular close family. However we understood that the close friends we had grown up with would no longer be close friends. So while you could maintain close family relationships the friendships fell away.
Oddly enough we relocated to Fort Lauderdale Fla. and joined up with a bunch of ex JW friends who used to be pioneers and JW bystanders. So looking back we had an easier road to follow then many. We kind of helped one another to normalize and enjoy life. We went camping together, Rock Concerts, drank together and smoked pot though neither my wife and I liked pot.
No drugs........ I specialized in drinking brown liquor. Though now in my old age I stay with clear liquor.
How I landed on this forum some 9 years ago was I went online to find out how many JW's there were in the world............. that question led me to forums and I was able to understand everything Ex JW's or leaving JW's were talking about.
It was like I found my lost tribe!
is there a book (books, articles, etc.
) that systematically examines and exposes wt propaganda techniques?
if not, do you think such a book would be useful in helping people escape the borg or in recovering from their own indoctrination?.
The True Believer by Eric Hoffer. Never mentions the JW's but read the following from his book:
"All active mass movements strive, therefore, to interpose a fact-proof screen between the faithful and the realities of the world. ...by claiming that the ultimate and absolute truth is already embodied in their doctrine and that there is no truth nor certitude outside it. ...To rely on the evidence of senses and of reason is heresy and treason. It is startling to realize how much unbelief is necessary to make belief possible. What we know as blind faith is sustained by innumerable unbelief's.
Not only does a mass movement depict the present as mean and miserable - it deliberately makes it so. It fashions a pattern of individual existence that is dour, hard, repressive and dull. It decries pleasures and comforts and extols the rigorous life. It views ordinary enjoyment as trivial or even discreditable, and represents the pursuit of personal happiness as immoral.
This is what every cult tries to do........ including the JW's.
the humanist organisation in the uk wants to protect non-religious people who leave their church/religion from being punished for doing so.
they want the religious hate crime legislation in the uk to be extended to people who are not religious.
i hope they will succeed.
You don't get to have freedom of religion without freedom from religion.
Stunning violates the law of coercion. The WT makes it's followers act in a certain way re shunning........ otherwise they in turn.......... will be shunned by close family and friends. It has evolved to a punishment for the innocent.
The question is if you didn't have this rule and your own fear of being shunned......... would you still maintain some level of contact with the person who has left the JW construct?
When you look at the history of 'the truth' according to the WT........ people were shunned for getting a transplant during that era and ongoing smoking a couple of cigs a day. Watching a little porno. ETc. and even if the policy changed that were never notified and welcomed back.
There is a deep sickness in the JW construct just like the Christian Scientists, Scientology, the Amish etc.
When a religion promotes negative issues it has little to no value.
the humanist organisation in the uk wants to protect non-religious people who leave their church/religion from being punished for doing so.
they want the religious hate crime legislation in the uk to be extended to people who are not religious.
i hope they will succeed.
The JW corporate organization is a criminal organization plain and simple.
They use duress which is against the law in every first world county. They ignore that motivating people to act in a certain way (shunning) is what criminals do to compel individuals to succumb to their rule.
Duress is a criminal offense...... so the WT organisation is in fact, by example, a criminal organization. Do as we say or we will do it to you. Like it or not that's a criminal crime.
Your average JW never signed up to break relationships with people they loved or maintained close family friendships with. Their are compelled to do so against their better judgement by a powerful criminal organization.
It's all about duress which is hidden under the rule of freedom of religion. Unfortunately you don't get freedom of religion unless you have freedom FROM religion.
It's one of the reasons why their failed criminal pedophile issue has exploded. Their freedom of religion doesn't allow you to have freedom from their religion. You have to put up with the child abusers until God deals with it.
Your role is to suck it up and put up with everything that is wrong with this failure of a religion.
This is why families are destroyed.......the WT gets to send their bullshit willy nilly among the faithful. And there is little opposition to their bullshit.
as jehovah’s witnesses, we were regularly told how awful a college education is.
i’m no longer associated with the religion but i am not so pro university.
it’s not because i think you are better off without a degree.
I agree with those who have experience in 'higher education' and are speaking the truth about this opportunity from their actual experiences.
Those who make up crap that fit a personal agenda be it the far right or far left....... are worthless in the classroom or on a forum.
When we were JW's we understood the thinking was done when the WT or Awake spoke. No need for higher education. No need to go on Satan's internet and check out a teaching. Being ignorant was a blessing.
we had our first family thanksgiving gathering this last thursday with our youngest sons family.
before we started to eat we went around the table saying what we were thankful for.
what our granddaughter had to say brought tears to our eyes.
We were out in our early 20's JW wise. Our son was born in the mid 1960's. This was a time when they changed the draft rules ie. you didn't have to serve if you had a child. (Vietnam was on and I had lost my Ministerial deferment).
So years later I told my son that his coming along kept me from having to serve during the Vietnam War which probably saved my life.
So he thought about this and then with a sly smile on his face said "So what did I get in return?"
And I responded " You kept me out of Vietnam and your mother and I kept you away from becoming a Jehovah's Witness!".
if someone lacks belief is that somehow mean he’s done in their eyes and no way back?
.
In the JW world Faith is mixed up with belief. If you don't believe in a teaching you have no faith. If you have no faith you don't have belief. It's an understood role of trusting the WTBTS no matter what they teach or believe.
People die before their time for want of a life saving blood transfusion.
People died from a lack of a Transplant that could have saved their lives circa 196O's........ and for a decade later. Transplants and transfusions are still saving lives.
Here's the bottom line.......... never..... ever...... trust your religion to make the right medical decision for you.
Example: Scientology re mental issues, or Christen Scientists re any medical health by any medical professionals.
The Christian Scientists are down to fifty thousand believers world wide. The rest died off from stuff that could have been treated.
The same Kingdom Hall Elders who are telling you not to get a transfusion are the same guys who will be washing your hospital room windows...... a week later.
Make a choice that saves your life.......live on.
when i drive by the kingdom hall i grew up attending at but, was sold directly to a church, i get angry.
the elders who handled the sale didn't even remove the watchtower shaped bricks on each side of the sign near the street so, now they advertise for a baptist church.
how many times as i grew up i heard things like: you should not do work ( such as clean carpets for a church) you wouldn't want to work at a cigarette making plant or a facility that makes bombs for the military.
First off JohnTron your treating the JW and the Society as a sincere organization. It's not..... there is nothing..... NOTHING in their history that offers any real truth. Any real love.
The WT Society was a poor door to door publishing house......... the religion came much latter...... It grew at a time when people were inclined to accept a message that added up to 'Millions living today may never die'.
Of course everyone died...it was a lie foisted by people who may never have graduated High School. No need for higher education........the 'end' was coming.
Being a JW means living in a religious dump. A religion with no charity, no real hope of living a better life. It's rules and truth changes every year.
It has convinced millions that they should never agree to a life saving blood transfusion. An interpretation that comes from a God who drowned every man, women and child even the unborn and every animal in the great flood.
And your pissed off that a kingdom hall gets sold to another rinky dink religion? A kingdom hall built on the backs of it's followers....financed by it's followers who now will need to travel to a KH some distance away to attend a meeting?
It's not that one religion, a militant religion is willing to justify making a profit off the backs of it's followers. The real truth is that the WTBTS leadership are cheats and liars.
A KH makes a better drive-threw dry cleaners........... Or a Dollar Store.
Some one has to pay the financial judgments handed down by the courts when the Society is found guilty of hiding it's Pedophiles with their two witness rule and their idiot Elders.
the popular berkeley evolution site (while responding to the misconception that evolution is just "a theory about the origin of life" does state:.
"evolutionary theory does encompass ideas and evidence regarding life's origins (e.g., whether or not it happened near a deep-sea vent, which organic molecules came first, etc.
), but this is not the central focus of evolutionary theory.
Why do so many ex-JWs have so much trouble getting over creationism?
It's not just JW's it's people that need a certainty, a plan, a cause , an explanation that works for them.
It's not science it's belief. Belief is faster then evolution.
A dull mind can only except a short answer.
