New Trend in Dramas?
by breakfast of champions inso it used to be that all dramas were ot.
period, that was it.. then they started incorporating a "modern day" application of the ot drama where actors in the present day reflected on the story.. then they started using some highly fictionalized nt characters in dramas (never jesus of course).
in the past few years we've been getting more "modern dramas", just about people in the present dealing with their "problems".

Why do they keep doing this?
by TTATT in"even many who claim to be religious feel that they are at liberty to do what they think is right, without any obligation to obey god and his commandments.
(ps.
14:1) this attitude may pose a real threat to true christians.

The picture that they included (re comparisons) about music was so wrong. On the left hand side they had hip hop playing on a mobile (bad) on the right side was violin music (good). They demonstrate how out of touch they are as well as being overly judgemental on matters that should not concern them.

There is a comment made in relation to this in the September, 2013 wt which I quoted elsewhere, it states
11 In addition to helping us stay awake spiritually, the directions that we have received help us with matters of everyday life. Examples include maintaining a balanced view of material things and keeping a simple eye in order to reduce anxiety. We have also benefited from guidance regarding our dress and grooming, choosing wholesome entertainment, and deciding on the appropriate amount of education. And think of the safety reminders we have received as to our homes, automobiles, Kingdom Halls, and preparing for possible emergencies. Such counsel shows that God cares about our well-being.

All authority belongs to the GB and all directions that they issue demonstrate God's care. Not only do their directions go beyond what is written in the bible but many times is has caused heartache and difficulties. They are very bold men to make the declaration that it is God showing his care.

Awkward moment at the WT study today
by FadeToBlack inwhen we got to paragraphs 10,11 with the reference to the box at the top of the page - is your teaching up-to-date?
the conductor asked for an explanation of what the current 'bible truth' was.
for the first one, 'this generation (matt 24:34) absolutely nobody raised their hand!

I don't think there is anything in the July Watchtower about the generation but they have moved about eight mentions of Jesus' presence (Matt 24 and 25) from having occurred in 1914 to the future. It will be interesting to see if they move the countdown of the generation to beginning in a future period as well.

My Letter to Brooklyn about the Parousia that got me disfellowshipped
by cofty inthis is the letter i wrote back in '96 about the parousia.
following the '95 watchtower that disconnected the "generation" from 1914 i began to look carefully at end-time prophecy and soon discovered what i knew were basic errors in what i had been taught.. i was a loyal jw at the time and was still serving as an elder.
i used only watchtower publications in my research.

Marking.
How they deal with those that present the truth to them in a logical and humble manner speaks volumes and shows they are not sincere in their efforts to understand the bible better.

You make an interesting point Jam. I've talked about disfellowshipping when JWs have come around in their house to house work. They believe that in recent years the GB has softened and doesn't take the hard stand it once did. I couldn't believe it when I heard them say this because it is not what we read in the magazines.
I can only think that it is the older elders that have softened and this is not what the GB want. The idea has been confirmed by some of the recent elders meetings that have been mentioned on here. They have brought out the whip and basically told the elders to be tougher.
So when you get a conflicting message at an assembly, it is going to have some JWs appalled at the position they are supposed to take.

new light = redefining meanings while retaining concepts and JW language
by wallsofjericho ini thought of this during another thread.. major changes in the doctrine by dropping old ideas would seem too obvious.
as in the past the wts just "redefines" all the old terms.
the old - "taking from one shoulder and moving it to the other shoulder" trick.

They've built themselves on a shaky foundation which is not solid. Instead of fixing it they redecorate the house, hoping averyone will be blindsited by their appearance.

Ah yes, that old saying 'I told you so'. I ws also told that it was in very bad manners to make a point of this and it served no one any benefit other than making yourself look puffed up.

Here's some spiritual food being served at an appropriate time. From their August 2013 Awake this comment is made
UNITED STATES
Each day, more than 20 former members of the United States’ armed forces commit suicide. Every month, some 950 veterans who are receiving care from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs attempt suicide.
That is how traumatizing war is, eyewitnesses at Armageddon are going to have to toughen up.
