I remember that! It must have stopped sometime in the late '80s to mid '90s then, since that's when I would have been old enough to remember. I don't remember when it stopped either. Sorry, mad.

Old Time Assemblies Question - Watchtower Study
by Mad Sweeney inplease refresh my memory.. in the past, did they have an actual watchtower study at the assembly with questions and answers?.
if so, do you know when that ended and they started doing the review as a 30 minute talk?.
what would the arrangement at the assembly in, say, 1966 have been for the watchtower study?.

Ya ever struggle with feelings of hatred or negative views of others? Misanthropy?
by miseryloveselders insomedays i've got a monster within my blood, and every so often i'd love to just give into it.
throwing the jw factor aside, i genuinely believe that having and demostrating love for others is an honorable way to live.
however, and there's always a however with everything in life, but i struggle sometimes trying to be consistent with love.

Benefit of the doubt is important. We don't really know why a person acts the way they do, if we knew it all we might understand. Or they might really just be an asshole. But assuming they're not, kill them with kindness. It usually disarms them, and if it doesn't you can still cuss them in your head and smile.

the following figures from an article in newsweek represent the number of college graduates within each religious group in america.
can this be used to relate the intelligence of the membership of each religion?

The rumor that Jehovah's Witnesses don't pursue higher education is a myth.
No one said JWs don't pursue higher education. They are discouraged from doing so, so most of them don't some do. I just did a quick comparison on the ARDA website between JWs, UUs, Catholics, and American Baptists. JWs rank the lowest in 4 year college degrees of all the denominations they have data for. Don't believe me? Check it yourself. Source

POLL/SURVEY- Why Did You Leave The Organization of JW's?
by PublishingCult inwhy did you leave the organization of jehovah's witnesses, and/or why are you contemplating leaving the organization of jehovah's witnesses?.
i've tried to boil it down to the most likely answers based on all the reasons i have heard over the years from xjw's.
a. because the watchtower bible & tract society does not have the truth.. b. because i had a personality conflict with other members of the organization.. c. because i discovered that the wtbts was not being honest or forthcoming about its history.. d. because serving jehovah was too difficult and i just wanted to be worldly and do wicked things.. e. because the governing body of jehovah's witnesses have proved to be false prophets.. f. because i found just cause to disagree with erroneous jw teachings.. g. because the governing body and/or elders were hypocritical.

D-- I'm not the only one, am I? I was sick of screwing up and feeling worthless, so I gave up and went to see what was out here while I still had time. It wasn't until several years later that I found out the real truth about the religion I was raised in. Now I won't go back because of A, C, F, G (ex. Malawi and the UN added together), and H-- their beliefs kill people. I will have no part in it and I will not expose my child to it.

Do Children Who Get Baptized Have Any Legal Leeway To Leave The Religion When They Are Older Without Shunning?
by minimus inafter reading the threads on watchtower encouraging 10 year olds to take the baptismal plunge, i wonder if they have an actual legal right to terminate their agreements without any penalty enforced by the organization.. i think those of us who were "too young" to enter into any contract could be absolved of any agreements, even religious vows, because we were still obviously too young to understand all the "fine print" before signing.. what do you think??
?.

Minimus,
This is something I've been thinking about lately too. I know the shunning won't stop. But what if some case sets a precedent so that children cannot enter into that contract with the WTBTS? If I ever won the lottery, had the money to do it, I would try it. I'm no lawyer, but I think it would take establishing that those baptismal vows are the legal basis for disfellowshipping and therefore a religious contract or law that minors cannot legally be held to or allowed to be part of in the first place. It wouldn't be about stopping shunning but stopping minors from being baptized.

Social Networks are a threat to the Watchtower Society
by FrankWTower inin recent months there have been massive protests and demonstrations against autocratic rulers in the middle east and north africa.
many of these were possible in part because the protesters used social media services like facebook, youtube and twitter to get the word out and let the world know what was going on.
these services are so threatening to many governments that they're blocked in order to control their people.

So according to the Jun 15 WT, Jesus ransom sacrifice only applies to the anointed class a.k.a the GB.
by onemore inive noticed for a while now (especially at the assemblies) the frequent use of the term: jehovahs friends whenever they referr to the second class christian, ahem....great crowd, aka the non-anointed christian with earthly hope.
even in some wt studies they often throw in phrases like seeking friendship with jehovah, our friend jehovah, etc.
so, the subtle message is clear, the great crowd are not children of god, they are friends of god.

Miz, that is really similar, I think. Heck, you can be crazy as a loon and it's over looked if you're anointed. But you always have to check yourself if you're other sheep.
I wasn't really thinking about the perks the big boys get. What does it take to lose your anointing? I don't know what they say, I know they can be df'd but do they lose it if they are and come back? For the other sheep, their surviving depends on how much they do, the attitude they have, not getting df'd before the big A, and even then it's not certain. If I had realized that while in. . .I keep reading stuff like this and thinking, "how did I miss that before?"

Doesn't that mean that the great crowd have to work for their gift but the anointed don't? I wonder if that's why the number partaking keeps growing. Sounds like it's a lot easier to be anointed.

My thoughts, no experience, if you feel like you need to and you're okay with the consequences, do it. Don't expect a reply though.
