My first internet account was CompuServe, in 1986. $14 a month, plus usage fees according to bandwidth. 300 baud dialup modem. I had an IBM PC XT 286 with a 287 math co-processor, a VGA CRT, both 5.25" and 3.5" floppy drives and a massive 40 MB hard drive. It set me back $3,500. I was the envy of the neighborhood.

i think i may have reached another crossroads.
the most tolerant woman in the world and i were discussing it last night.
i've seen my loss of faith like a relationship breakup, i've done the gut wrenching fear bit and i've been heavily invested in the anger and angst phase where i've sought out people who believed as strongly as i once did and challenged them (like an ex-lover calling up for a shouting match.
You may feel differently in awhile. Some of us hope so, anyway.
This place can be a nuthouse at times. You not participating will just lower the average IQ.

the jehovahs witnesses claim that god is using their earthly organisation in the last days!
im realy not too sure.
Sometimes when you just pop into JWN it feels like stepping into a fourth dimension or something, y'know? Either that or like stepping into an asylum.
i'm an atheist, my wife's a jehovah's witness.
each of us knocks on your door and has something to sell to you.
it's up to you to choose.
A sensible approach, Curtains.
what's happening geologically recently seems to be bringing out the sandwich boards and doomsday proclaimers.
signs of the end of the world?
not likely, at least not in the scriptural sense.
Same one as you, Estephan, except my feet are planted firmly on it.
No, it will not be the end of the world. It will only mean that things are going to cost more. With oil over $100 a bbl, things are already starting to cost more because freight costs have gone up, and everything you buy has to be freighted from where it is manufactured or grown to where you buy it. So buy it now if you have some cash and while it has greater purchasing power. If, for example, you are convinced that food prices are going to go up over the next couple of years more than the interest rate the bank will pay you, it makes sense to stock up on non perishable food as the better investment (and better than waiting for the Rapture to whisk you safely away.)
It could very well be that government will pull some kind of rabbit out of a hat, but at the moment it's difficult to imagine what that might be. It may be best to hedge your bets.

Thanks, darth. Quite the story.
A documentary worth watching is "Inside Job", which won the Oscar for best feature length documentary this year. It explains how a bunch of people got filthy rich while millions lost everything, causing the 2008 economic collapse. Bad things can and will happen in the economy. Best be at least a little prepared for them.
first of all, i have severe arachnophobia.
rationally, i know most spiders are harmless, but something takes over my brain and my body when i see one........i totally freak out, i can't help it.
they are little pieces of death, wrapped in scarey...... .
It can kill in 3 minutes
Sounds better than, say, prostate cancer....
