FHN - Oh my god, I remember that horrible incident. There are pranks and there are pranks. Seems we need a better definition to distinguish pranks from malicious mischeif. It's one thing to lay a wallet on the sidewalk with a fishing line attached. It's another to drop a brick off an overpass.

The tops for me were:
MOVIES
Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Rosalind Russell and Ross Martin. On a movie location, chatting 5 feet from me. The director called the shot was ready for them. The scene was of Russell and Fairbanks having a little pictnic at the beach. Russell had arthritis so bad she needed two crewmen to help her up and down off the blanket . Took two takes and that was it. They didn't seem to recognize me.
Gregory Peck at a sneak preview of a movie he produced.
Robert Mitchum in a local hardware store in Santa Barbara.
Willian Shatner on a location at the Santa Barbara Courthouse . I was in a nearby phone booth and turned around and he was grinning at me waiting for the phone. He didn't ask for my autograph.
Vic Morrow on a location shoot at the Santa Barbara Courthouse. Different film.
Burl Ives on a location shoot near the SB Couthouse. Different film.
Robert & Ethel Kennedy one block from the Santa Barbara couthouse. He was assassinated a few days later in LA.
Ronald Reagan, twice. Once on a movie location in the San Fernando valley and years later when he was running for governor.
SPORTS
Had my pic taken with:
World Heavyweight Champion Mike Weaver.
SF 49'er kicker, Ray Wershing.
lots of others, but those were highlights.

I think there is more to the story. It may come out but probably not.
First of all, the personal nurse assigned to Kate would not be answering an outside call. It would have to have been transferred from the hospital switchboard and possibly routed through more than one intermediary. The fact that her phone rang would lead her to believe it was legitimate. She obviously was a very competent nurse to be assigned to such an important patient. I can see how she could have fallen for the hoax and think she was speaking to the Queen. It was her bad luck to be duped and end up with her voice on the recording.
I would like to know just how much grief she received from her superiors and possibly the Royal family for the embarassment. It apparently was more than she could deal with. Very sad ending to a rather harmless prank.
I don't think the DJ's should have been fired. This outcome should be enough punishment for them to learn a lesson.
Shirley,I didn't know that was the case. It would be hard to understand why she would off herself.

Fall of Giants---Ken Follet
by ldrnomo inone of the most freeing things i've been able to do since fading from the watchtower's tendril like grasp is, "read what i want to" i particularly enjoy historial novels because they entertain and inform all at the same time.
i'm just finishing the first of a trilogy "fall of giants" and there was a paragraph that made me think of the great influence of propaganda machines (probably because i was so influenced by the watchtower) i am hugely aware of it's power to lead people all over the place like the waves of the sea i suppose.. here is the paragraph:.
maud knew the proprietor of the mail, lord northcliffe.

I found the book a big disapointment. The background historical facts presented were accurate but the fictional story made the book a boring repetitive soap. I bought it because I have read all of Folletts books and found him to be a pretty good story teller. For history I prefer non-fiction history books.
As to the bigger question I have to agree with Dagney's comments above.
PS If anyone wants my copy I will send it to them as a Xmas present at my expense. It is like new, no boogers.
PM me. first come, first served.

Charlie is inspired by his Bi-polar disorder that has pretty much gone unmanaged. History reveals many with this condition who excelled. But some self destruct. His proclivity for porn stars is probably not a good course to set for a happy life.
Being famous and rich just makes it harder.
Anyone who has a loved one who is enticed by the entertainment industry should be very, very careful.
