Do you miss "dressing up" for the meetings?
by dozy ini was thinking about this the other day when doing a bit of tidying up of my wardrobe.
all the kh suits are now pushed to the back of the wardrobe and i am seriously thinking about a visit to the charity shop to get rid of most of them.. for me one of the (few) enjoyable aspects of being a jw was getting dressed up.
my secular work very rarely involves putting on a dress suit & tie so i miss getting dressed up - smart suit , tie , shiny shoes , slapping on the aftershave.

G'day from Oz - My Story
by Gemmel inhi, i've been lurking for a few days reading the site, interesting stuff ;).
i've been out of the org for 23 years, i was 27 i left an agnostic and became an atheist many years ago.
i knew i was going to leave for 7 years before i did but had stayed in because i didn't want to hurt my family, it hadn't occurred to me that they might shun me.

thanks VIII for the info on Yoga....I will have to check out the sites that you listed. This whole working out thing is rather new to me. I have tried over the years but have never stayed with it. BUT having a personal trainer holds me accountable and that is exactly what I need. It pushes me to work on the eliptical the days that I am not training and it also makes me want to eat the right things too.
brotherdan, you too give me much food for thought. This past year has truly been a test of faith for me. At times I am not sure WHAT to believe let alone who to believe in. If I believe in God, then is what I have been taught for the past 40 years about Jehovah all a farce, or can I gleam bits and pieces from it and still believe in Him. If I believe in God, Jehovah then I believe in prayer and that he answers them according to his will. If I don't, then I go for more of a placebo affect. Both sound good to me......I am such a mess! LOL
Chalam, I LOVE the New International Version that you have been quoting from. When I was first df'd and trying to go to the meetings, I would study from the publications but use a bible from the internet (bible gateway) as I wanted to see how the other translations read. I believe it was the version that you are quoting from that I found I prefered over the New World Translation.
Thanks again for taking the time to respond......I just love the diversity from this group!!

VIII.....speaking of Yoga.....my trainer recommended I take a Yoga class this last week. I was too sick to go yesterday, but I think it is something that I would like to do. Right now I work with a trainer 3 days a week and am on the eliptical the other 4. But would love to add another class or 2 each week. How long have you been doing it and how often?

Very interesting replies! Thank you......
I am having a difficult time praying as of late.....have actually stopped praying all together. As I replied in a thread earlier, I used to go to God in prayer thinking that he was listening. I would pour my heart out to him in the good times and in the bad. When I was first df'd I prayed for God to forgive the men who judged me so harshly. Now, I question whether or not he is actually there to listen and IF he is there to listen to us then why would only selective prayers be answered by seletive people.
Undercover, I agree with you on the SIL.....I do have to say that YES she IS a VERY loving woman and has seen her fair share of hard times......was even df'd for over 20 years. I can appreciate where she is right now with her illness and her place with God, but none the less it does bother me greatly when she comes across as being self righteous! My fear is when her cancer takes over and her prayers and efforts seem to go unnoticed by God. What will she think about God then? Will she be angry with him? Or will she just blame Satan for the bad once she has lost the battle? Maybe prayer for her right now is the "placebo" that she needs to get her through her day to day trials. Maybe it is the "placebo" that she needs to make her feel as if God is healing her. I hope to never be in her position to find out.
Terry, I appreciate your answer as well......not a flippant answer at all.......kind of the same thought process that I am on right now.
I really had not thought about it as a "placebo" or phycological affect......but I find that it makes a great deal of sense.

Sad Family News.....
by AK - Jeff inon friday morning, sometime before noon, my former son-in-law [for lack of better term, for he and my daughter were never married], father and custodial parent of my middle granddaughter, was found dead of an overdose of pain-medication.
perhaps oxycontin, though i am unsure of the specific drug at the moment.. he was enduring pain from an accident with his moped [yes, he was lifetime license removed for drinking] that occurred a year or so back.
his shoulder was injured and he had a surgery scheduled soon.

For example. My SIL has been fighting stage iv leiomyosarcoma (which in incurable) for over 2 years now. There have been quite a few ups and downs in her treatments and her prognosis along with way. She is a full time pioneer and has been since shortly after her diagnosis. She feels as if her relationship with Jah is strong and that because of constant prayer and her service to him that he is the reason for her wellness up to this point.
My question is this......What happens when her cancer stops responding to any treatment and she dies? Why would God answer her prayers and heal her for a time, then stop and allow the cancer to take her when her prayers and continued service never cease?
Does the Power of Prayer really exist? Why would one person's prayers be answered to save a loved one and another one's not?
Let's hear your thoughts.......

Did you have a relationship with...
by stillin9 inwhen you were in the org, did you ever really have a relationship with jehovah?
if so, how did this relationship manifest itself?
was it just a warm fuzzy feeling when you prayed?
-
confuzzled777
Stillin9, this is a great question......Before my current state of mine, I always felt like I could turn to Jah when I needed someone to talk to. I never felt like my relationship with him was as close as some, but felt like he was always there for me to vent to. Otherwise I would just be talking to myself......lol I guess I least I felt like someone was "listening" to my deepest thoughts and emotions.
"It was never Jehovahs fault, he never changed in his love, it has always been there."
Truth and Justice, thanks for the food for thought..... this comes at a time where I have not prayed to God for a good long while. I have been SO angry and SO hurt over what happened with me, that it has caused doubt whether or not Jehovah is the God that I have been taught about.

The longest prayer you had ever endured.
by african GB Member infrom personal experience i know it usually happens at the end of a district convention.
it would be either the do, co or an experienced elder.. they usually go through everything that was said throughout the dc and thank jehovah for this and that...... last year i used my stop watch to record the time taken by our do,.
by the time he said amen!
-
confuzzled777
We have an elder in our hall that we can bank on at least a 10 minute prayer every time he takes that mic, before or after meeting. Just when you think he is going to stop......and hope he is going to stop.......he continues. Painful...... What's worse is he has a heavy accent, so most just tune him out.
