made a note of ideas I like and agree with from the youtube

a belief can be indeterminate

men educated in the critical habit of thought are slow to believe

merely having a belief is no indicator of your having thought about something

having beliefs grants no one priviliged status

absence of belief in god simply means gods don't feature in the things I believe exist

I like the last statment best because to me it says there is no void in an atheist's life - his/her life is full. This is also true of babies.

thanks sweetbabycheezits, I am mostly an atheist but tend to try and look at things from the point of view of a believer as I have been a strong believer. I do wonder if Dawkins has ever been a believer in his childhood for example.

so then, nikolas, if babies are atheists at birth, where on the scale of 1-10 would you locate them. Is dawkins saying that lack of specific knowledge is lack of belief. There is something wrong here but I can't quite put my finger on it.

religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, just as it is the spirit of a spiritless situation.

thanks for posting this cofty.

I can understand people turning to religion when they are anguished and oppressed but when a person is not in this state surely then it is time to take a break - to get out of one's comfort zone, to explore the dark side. One can always come back to religious sentiments if one needs to in order to transport oneself to a place of peace.

i am anglican.

when i lived in new york, the subway was out at the columbia stop and i walked down amerstdam instead of broadway to get to the next stop.

as i passed this enormous cathedral structure, i saw a sign stating that cesar chavez, the migrant worker leader, and geraldo rivera were preaching the sermon on sunday.

i have been getting in on going debates with brothers in the congregation about the role of the governing body.

i feel that jehovah would not want us to blindly follow a particular g.b.

you guys did warn me about the americans - they do pop out some crazies. But in the main i have found them no different from Brits and very nice people

omg - listener - botr also has you down as me and honourthesis. this is unbelievable.

I have flu so I am not at work today. I have had to explain on another thread that I am not honoutrhises. I am not even American, and have never been there.

What I find most shocking is how many people believe BOTR. Perhaps this because of her persuasive rhetoric from her legal backround. But surely such ability carries with it a sense of responsibility and a greater sense of discernment? She makes assumptions and sticks to them not allowing for the fact that her assumptions are based partly on ignorance and stupidity.
