Candles and JWs
by badboy ini wonder how many jws r aware that candles have pagan origins as admitted by bishop newman(sp?
) in the 19th century?
should a faithfull jw have anything to do with candles therefore?

Candles are not mentioned in most modern Bibles, for the simple fact that they were not used in the East. Small earthen lamps, with a wick floating in the oil, gave a feeble light. The older Bible versions that contain candle and candlestick are now known to be a common English mistranslation of "lamp", "lampstand" (menorah). See Exodus 25:31-40 and Rev. 1:12. It is known, however, that candles, as we know them, were used by the Etruscans and Romans. But why should that make them taboo? From earliest times, Christians used candles for evening prayer. The lighting of candles symbolized Christ as the Light of the world. Christians, in turn, were to also let their light shine See John 8:12 and Matt. 4:14-16.

Perhaps man's free will is more important to God than His omnipotence, omnipresence, omnibenevolence, and all other omnis. I'd hate to think of us all being little "robots," inspite of the fact that man can inflict harm and death to his fellowman. Then we would have something else to accuse God of!

GOING DOWN TO THE WIRE
by You Know inthings are gettn interestinger and interestinger every day.
on the international scene any number of scenarios can serve as triggers to set off wwiii, or the tribulation, whatever you may prefer to call it.
the next cross-border atrocity by rogue militants could easily detonate a conflagration between nuclear-poised india and pakistan.

Doesn't Rev. 11:18 state that Jehovah "will bring to ruin those ruining the earth?" Yet we are asked to believe that after nuclear weapons have been used here and there that Jehovah Himself will bring to ruin other portions of the earth at Armageddon? Or will He destroy only people? If that is the case, why the constant barrage of pictures like the one on page 232 of the book "Revelation Its Grand Climax at Hand! Moreover, why would Jehovah do the same thing He accuses the ruiners of doing. Oh, the folly of those who want to literalize everything in the Book of Revelation. If nuclear weapons are used extensively then I suppose that is why Jesus is depicted as riding on a horse, with a sword in his mouth striking the nations and killing them (Rev. 19:15, 21) And blood up to a horse's bridle for two hundred miles (Rev. 14:20). That certainly should set mankind back to riding on horses and fighting with swords!

Comforter,
It seems to me that God comforts the uncomfortable and
discomforts the confortable. Are you beginning to manifest symptoms of discomfort? -

A few months before a huge earthquake rocked China in 1974,
ordinary animals began to act strangely.
Hens didn't roost. Pigs climbed walls and bit each others
tails. Hibernating snakes slithered out of the found. Barnyard
geese wouldn't fly. Trained German shepherds refused commands.
The Chinese heeded the animals' behavior. Several hundred thousand lives were saved when the region was evacuated two days
before the quake struck. -

Three monkeys sat in a coconut tree
Discussing things as they are said to be.
Said one to the other, "Now listen, you two,
"There's a rumor around that can't be true
"That man descended from our noble race
"The very idea is a great disgrace
"No monkey has ever deserted his wife
"Starved her babies and ruined her life
"And you'll never know a mother monk
"To leave her babies with others to bunk
"Or pass from one to another
"Till they scarcely know their mother
"Here's another thing a monkey won't do
"Go out at night and get on a stew
"Or use a gun or club or knife
"To take some other monkey's life
"Yes, man descended, the ornery cuss
"But, brother, he didn't descend from us."
