  Vidiot : Hasn't some historical evidence been found recently suggesting that a lot of the "persecution" stories the early Christians told were propaganda?

  That's certainly the contention of the two scholars in the above attached argument. They are not alone in their viewpoint. But I know of no 'historical evidence' as mentioned in your post. Rather the viewpoint is inferred from the extant Imperial records.

  I drew attention because as JWs we knew we may have to endure - or worse, see our kids tortured in front of us. Of course, the JWs are not alone in their boast of being persecuted for his name's sake, and there is something of an argument that it all harks back to second temple Judaism and the Maccabean rebellion in which some Maccabean supporters became 'martyrs.'

  Their conclusion. Yes, firstly, some early Christians died that way, but so did lots of non-Christians.

  Secondly, dislike of Christians was not Imperial policy. At least, not until the last few decades before Constantine's ascension to supremacy, and then only because they were seen as disloyal to the state ,

  Posted: Somebody innocent is gonna end up shot, on purpose or otherwise.

  Yup! That's what we've seen around the world. ... Lots of dead people in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria (and Chile as another poster pointed out), but I'm not sure whether they were shot on purpose or otherwise, except in Chile where anyone killed by Pinochet's thugs was surely killed on purpose

  Jesus in the old testament

  about two years ago i was challenged by a householder to do the research on the subject.

  of course thinking it was all bunk i decided to take a look off the reservation.

  much to my surprise a lot of started to make sense and i started to understand the connections between the old and new testament .

  Response: In the minds of most Christians including the JWS, there is a belief that the OT writers foretold a divine or semi-divine or human figure who would liberate the Jewish people from gentile domination.

  The NT writers claim that Jesus fulfilled those OT 'prophecies,' some even suggesting that Jesus claimed fulfillment. Whether he actually did claim that or whether later writers (of the gospels) wrote that he claimed that he fulfilled the OT prophecies cannot be known for sure.

  What is sure, is that Jesus died, and outside of the imaginations of believers, has never been heard from again.

  Hence he was as much a dupe of the bible, as we ourselves once were.

  Posted: The most obvious answer is that the diverse books of the Bible were written over an extremely long period of time and the focus of the earlier time period was different from that of later time periods.

  Agreed, but with a caveat.

  In the period between Alexander the Great's conquest of Cyrus's Iranian (Persian) Empire and the foundation of Christianity big changes took place in Jewish thought. Lot's of things were written (of course) but by Constantine's rule, when he legalised the church, there were long arguments over what to incorporate into the churches collection of authoritative spiritual documents, and they apparently saw no need to give their divinity a name.
