By a coincidence, the UK Independent ran this story in today's web edition.
Can paedophiles be good people? We flinch, but there are varying degrees

Here's some extracts:
To help figure out what you think about it, consider this analogy, drawn by Dr Jackie Craissati, a leading psychologist in the field. "If I were to say to you, all violence is the same, and all violent men are persistently violent, and you can't categorise by degrees of severity, you'd say: hang on a second. There's a difference between the bombmaker, and the man who tries to kill his partner, and the man who attacks someone in the pub, and all of these cases need different approaches. But if you make the same point about child sexual abuse, people say, how dare you?"
and,
The mere acknowledgement that they are not all the same is dangerously close to an act of imaginative sympathy, and therefore best made quietly, lest people think you are on their side.

NEW DELHI - Thousands of people have marched to protest alleged police inaction after a 6-year-old girl was raped at a school in Bangalore, India's technology hub.
More than 4000 parents and relatives of children who attend the school shouted slogans against the school's administration on Saturday and demanded that police arrest those involved in the July 2 incident, which was only reported this week.
The rape has raised questions about the safety of India's schoolchildren and sparked nationwide outrage over rampant sexual violence against girls and women. The school has refused to take responsibility for the crime.

The protesters squatted outside a police station and refused to move until the city's police chief*** assured them suspects would be arrested.
*** It is common in India for police to refuse to take action against any rapists.
Police (later) said eight members of the school's staff had been detained for questioning.

Haven't read the thread. Lewis Carroll liked photographing children in artful poses.
Yup! Barry has been accused of pedophilia. Did he physically touch a child? No evidence exists, but then the evidence seems to be that some who are attracted to children are able to discipline themselves sufficiently not to physically act on their desire.
(30 minutes using a search engine tuned to academic resources- such as google scholar- will give you some of that research).
Another person who may fit into the same category is Lord Baden Powell, the founder of the scouting movement. He was well-known to like photographing naked boys.
Today, in at least some jurisdictions, that could have landed him in gaol.
How do we sort out the mental inclination of these people? Was it a love of beauty that motivated them, or was it a more sinister sexual motivation?
