Thank you NVR2L8. Good points contrasting the WT study with university study.

Is the "Watchtower Study" = Question and answer a form of brainwashing??
by Witness 007 inon sundays study we were always told to keep answers brief and from the paragraph as some brothers would add "other meterial" to their comments.
the "correct" answer is right there in the paragraph.
read question --------find answer in paragraph------underline/highlight------read related {not] scripture-----raise hand---give answer from paragraph as though it's your own thought.

Teary, after reading the above comments from 00DAD and Room215, do you understand how the dynamic in the WT study is different from that of an academic classroom?

Hmm, so Teary is equating the Watchtower study to taking a class. In his comparison, the Watchtower magazine is the textbook, the KH is the classroom, the study coordinator is the professor, and the people in the congregation are the students. Anyone have any thoughts on this comparison?

When the lie is the truth and the truth is the lie...wwc case
by Aussie Oz inwhat an interesting conundrum the watchtower society has on its hands today, as they again go into a hearing that threatens their corporation.. the magistrate will have spent some time between the last hearing and today considering what is the truth about what he was told last time by steven unthank and rachel van witsen.. for years the wt has been lying to the jws about the fds existing and then in court tells the truth, that they don't exist.. but the magistrate does not have all this indocrination in his past so how may he look at it?.
he may well see the admission of witsen as the lie because unthank can prove that they do in print and in the minds of jws even though that is the real lie and witsen has told the actual truth!.
so the watchtowers lie to the jws may come back and bite tham on the arse because the magistrate thinks they lied in court instead!

Confused...
by raxxxx in.
hiya and... i do not really know where to begin... currently a jw... slightly starting to fade... got a girlfriend baptised... i am baptised also... my head is a mess... i do not know what to believe anymore... never really fully trusted elders as it comes to 'leading the flock'... got burned a few times with their ... decisions etc.
read a few articles in here about their alleged false beliefs... do not really know what to do... wondered if any of you felt like that at any point... when something that you trusted and followed most of your life... does not seem to be what you thought it was... .

Although I only recently studied with the JW's and stopped after a year, I spent 15 years before that believing the born-again, fundamentalist worldview. I am currently finding it refreshing to release myself from the pressure believers put on me regarding how I must approach the bible. It feels good to simply read about the history of civilization from a broader perspective and see how the bible fits into the picture.
As an example of pressure, I recall one phone conversation where my supposed friend said "Satan has you so deceived." I imagine that if you get into these kinds of discussions with believers within your own family/social circle, they may think this about you too. That's why forums like this can be helpful. When you feel ready, try posting about a topic you are interested in pursuing, and see what others have to say.

I imagine if you asked a question or said something that disagreed with the paragraph, the study conductor would not call on you again. Just a gut feeling. If I am correct, then since people are only allowed to say things that are either directly from the paragraph or close to it, I would think after a year of this repetition, people would internalize it. It would become part of how they speak and think. I have observed this result in my two JW acquaintances. Speaking with them sounds like I am listening to a recording of a Watchtower magazine.

Hello--new to the witnesses...and you
by LKM injust wanted to introduce myself.
i went to the kh for the first time 2 weeks ago...and will go again tomorrow.
i don't believe anything witnessy...(i was raised in the assembly of god church and now the closest thing i "do" with religion is yoga or sometimes the buddhist temple).... but the man i'm in love with is a df'd jw (we've been together for 6 years).... and he wants to get reinstated just to talk to his family again (i can assure you he does not believe it).... and he wants his family to accept me because we are about to get married... so, i'm going to meetings...its very interesting, but only because it shows me more about how he was raised.

Does he have any family at all, maybe extended, that is not JW that he could be in contact with?

4. he will never go door to door again
I would think this would hinder or even prevent his reinstatement. As I understand it, in order to convince the elders that one wishes to be "one of Jehovah's Witnesses," one must demonstrate this desire by his/her actions, including meeting attendance and field service. Note that when someone gets disfellowshipped, he/she is declared "no longer one of Jehovah's Witnesses." Your bf has to demonstrate that he wants to be a JW again.
To reinforce the importance they place on the door to door activity, I vividly recall a meeting in which the elder was talking about the blood issue. He said if someone accepts a blood transfusion, Jehovah considers that person bloodguilty, and furthermore, if we are not doing all we can to go door to door and warn people not to take blood transfusions, we ourselves become bloodguilty. Maybe this elder was exaggerating, but I don't see how your bf could get reinstated without going door to door at least in the beginning.

Best answer to "What prevents you from getting baptized?"
by venusinfauxfurs inthe nosy elder at the congregation i attend until i can get out very soon (just quickly: born in, was headed towards unbaptized pub but changed my mind about that and baptism) pulled me aside and showed me the scripture about coming across the body of water and asking "what prevents me from getting baptized" and i really want a quick, preferably smart-ass reply the next time he puts me on the spot like that.. .
.
fire away!

If I recall correctly, the eunuch himself asked the question.
There is a difference between, on one hand, wanting to get baptized (like the eunuch) and then taking the initiative to ask "what prevents me from doing it right here in this body of water?" and, on the other hand, someone asking you to provide reasons explaining why you haven't done it yet. It's two different dynamics.

Why on earth would WT use a FEMALE lawyer to defend it in Australia case?
by hamsterbait inhow many of us here find the use of a female to conduct the defence unusual?.
the wt religion is notoriously misogynistic.
anybody with a penis is preferable to do a non menial job.. why the change here?.

I don't think she is denying that the FDS exists though. What makes you say that?
Here are a couple of recent threads about it. In the one below, look at the result where the accused is the Faithful and Discreet Slave.
Also, below is a thread with more info & commentary from an observer.
