When I suggested to my JW acquaintance that something might be wrong with disfellowshipping b/c the disfellowshipped person loses his/her social structure, her exact words to me were, "They can find other people. They knew the deal before they got baptized." What do you think of her comment? Is she being fair or perhaps overly callous?

Practical Problems Arising From Leaving Jehovah's Witnesses - not on jw.org
by InterestedOne inwhat practical problems arise from leaving jehovah's witnesses?
this question was inspired by a poster whose jw friend refused to be a reference for an apartment.
i wonder if most jw's know deep down that they need to maintain some ties with non-jw's in case they find themselves either deciding to leave or ostracized for some reason..

Lost best friend...
by lostinnj83 inso i am not even out yet and i feel as though i have already lost my best friend.. i asked her if i could use her as a reference on an apartment rental if i decide to go the route of separation from my husband.
she knows all of what i went through in my marriage and how much pain and suffering that i have endured.. at first she said yes, no problem, then she asked if i would be speaking to the elders about it, and i said no, she asked why not, i said that is my choice to do or not do.. her response was that i pray and speak to the elders and that she thinks it best that i don't use her as a reference because she would feel that she was supporting my decision to separate.
i said fine but i also said that her response seems to be more of a concern about me speaking to the elders rather than being concerned for my well being.

What do people do who have NO friends on the outside??
I was thinking the same thing. The apartment reference is an example of practical problems that can arise if a person is steeped in a cultish group. Hopefully most people involved in high-control groups maintain some non-cult ties just in case they decide to leave or find themselves ostracized for whatever reason. Perhaps those whom the Watchtower calls "workmates" might be a common safety net. Reaching out to non-member extended family might be another option.

It's a shame how cultish behavior can unnecessarily complicate something as straightforward as an apartment reference. If a friend knows you are capable of being a good tenant, she should be willing to be a reference regardless of religious issues.

Avoiding Homelessness
by magotan ini'm falling apart here.
the false teachings of the jw enrage me; we started covering the information for the jeremiah book, and i was outraged at how they twist up the scriptures to meet what they want to say.
my dad wants to consider the "god's love" book during family worship evening.

You could rent a private mailbox. I do it through my local UPS store, but there are others. It's a convenient way to maintain a constant mailing address even if you move around. They also receive packages for you & call you when they arrive.

Your God asks for too much
by Qcmbr ini was wondering (again) about what i got out of my deal with mormon god.
the more i thought about it the more i realised that the xian god asks way too much and offers too little.. what does xg demand:.
1 - obedience to changeable often arbitrary commandments normally with little clarification of when and when not to apply them.

leave them be
I tend to notice word choice and can't help but notice AGuest uses the same phrase or a variation such as "leave me be." For example, post 10833 in

Just something I thought was interesting. Perhaps it is an example of how language can rub off on people.

There may be a difference between real truth and "bible truth." It's possible that real truth may be preferable and worth your attention.

Apostates are narrow-minded victims of brainwashing who believe everything they read
by cedars inor so says the person who left this comment on jwsurvey.org.... what just amazes me is how people can pass judgement on others, make vast sweeping statements and make out that they know best.
this isnt just based on this page, but other pages ive read on this website.
while youre at it why not just say all black people are criminals, all asians are rapists and all white people molest their children.

The comment quoted in the OP could have been written by my JW acquaintance. The wording and ideas are identical. I don't think it was written by her, but it shows how uniform their style is.

I've always thought "mouthpiece" was a strange word used among Christians. When I was a Christian, I would hear other Christians pray, "God, let us be your mouthpiece." I just googled it, and wikipedia shows it as part of a telephone handset as well as part of a brass or woodwind instrument. Thinking of a telephone, it still seems strange to picture God talking into a telephone mouthpiece, with the Christian or the Governing Body then transmitting the words through the telephone cord. It's all just so weird.
