I just got back from the study. We made it to the end of the chapter & decided to discuss 1914 next time. I will read the KISS thread and the other info. I think he is also preparing for this discussion because when I very first started the study, he asked me if I had any questions. I had just started reading up on JW's, and their 1914 idea seemed strange, so I asked him about it. I had already skimmed over some of the problems like 587 and I told him about them. After a few roundabout discussions, he proposed that we table the issue and work through the Bible Teach book & see if 1914 makes more sense after I am more familiar with JW doctrine. I am curious to see how he is going to spin the issue. He has been pretty clever so far.

Jesus' Physical Resurrection = Take the Ransom Back?
by InterestedOne inin my "study," we have encountered the matter of whether or not jesus' physical body rose from the dead.
i brought up a couple of scriptures that seem to indicate physical (john 2:18-22 and john 10:17,18).
the jw's i am "studying" with explained how, although those verses may appear to indicate physical, jesus couldn't have meant that because if he physically rose from the dead, he would have taken back the ransom.. now that i know the wt reasoning on this, can someone point me to another source, link, book, article, etc.

The NIV translates 1 Peter 3:18 as "He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit..."
Not that I know in the slightest how to translate Biblical Greek, but I looked in the kingdom interlinear, and it says "to spirit." I have no idea which translation is correct, NIV, NAS, etc.
Regarding 1 Cor 15:45, I agree that it must be taken in context. I haven't done a deep study of that section, but I can see that it is contrasting the physical with the spiritual as the writer describes the "resurrection of the dead" (see v.42). Using the NWT wording there are the following contrasts: corruption - incorruption ... dishonor - glory ... weakness - power ... physical body - spiritual body ... first Adam living soul - last Adam life-giving spirit ... first is physical - afterward spiritual ... first man out of earth - second man out of heaven ... as the one made of dust is, so are those who are made of dust - as the heavenly one is, so are the those who are heavenly ... just as we have borne the image of the one made of dust - we shall bear the image of the heavenly one ... flesh and blood cannot inherit God's kingdom ... corruption cannot inherit incorruption ...
Verse 45 in the kingdom interlinear says:
"Became the first man Adam into soul living; the last Adam into spirit making alive."
Off the top of my head, I get the sense that the section is talking about a transformation from physical to spiritual. Whether or not it has any bearing on whether or not Jesus rose physically, I have no idea.

My JW handler uses these two verses to prove that the "Bible teaches" a non-physical resurrection of Jesus:
1 Peter 3:18 and 1 Corinthians 15:45

Here are some excerpts from Russell from a quick google search showing that he taught a non-physical resurrection of Jesus.
1 " ... Our Lord was put to death in flesh, but was made alive in spirit; he was put to death a man, but was raised from the dead a spirit being of the highest order of the divine nature." Studies in the Scriptures, Vol. V. page 453.
2 ". . . It could not be that the man Jesus is the second Adam, the new father of the race instead of Adam; for the Man Jesus is dead, forever dead." Ibid. Vol. V, page 454.
3 " ... He [Christ] instantly created and assumed such a body of flesh and such clothing as he saw fit for the purpose intended." Ibid. Vol. II, page 127.
4 "Our Lord’s human body … did not decay or corrupt . . . whether it was dissolved into gases or whether it is still preserved somewhere ... no one knows." Ibid. Vol. II, page 129.

JM - Sorry. I'm in the middle of the God Delusion by Dawkins, so his ideas are fresh in my mind. I just threw his opinion into the mix as something to consider regarding theology. You clarified some terms though, so thank you.

After I typed what Dawkins said, I was thinking about how certainly you can put together a program of study called "theology" which would involve studying everything related to religion - history, languages, etc. However, I'm not sure what the difference is between a degree in "theology" and a degree in "mythology." I guess each discipline has its slight variations.

Richard Dawkins said he doesn't understand why there is even a degree in such a thing. To him, it's like getting a degree in fairyology.
