On the JW-only JWTalk discussion forum, I noticed that JW's laugh at people who bring up the past. They consider the past of the JW organization to be relatively unimportant compared to the present. I think they are somehow taught to think this way. When I met with a CO, he said the past is not as important as the "latest information."

In the next ten years the JW "history" will only extend back to 2000
by sinis ingiven current statistics with regards to attrition in the jw ranks, it becomes appearant that we are seeing the unfolding of the early 20th century with regards to the teachings of the jw's late 19th century.
with fewer and fewer old timers hanging on, and the influx of young or newbies, it is becoming quite clear that these newcomers ~5 maybe even ten years in... have no clue about the foundations of 1914, 1919 inspection, etc or the failed attempts of end of days, ie 1975, etc.
i believe this is what the gb are banking on!!!

Most recent Society lies about 1914?
by Essan inas i'm sure we all know, the society has lied repeatedly in the past about what they preached regarding 1914 in the run up to that year, claiming that what was preached was that jesus was to become king in that year and his presence was to begin then etc, when in fact they were preaching that all this had already happened in 1874 and that the end of the world would come in 1914.. .
but does anyone know if they have repeated this lie about what they supposedly preached recently?
when was the last time they claimed this?

Essan - Here is another section in the Bible Teach book about it. I tried to maintain the line of thought with my study conductor, and my study fizzled out a couple of weeks later. The following is from Chapter 8, Pars 22 & 23, on pages 84 & 85. It says:
22 When Jesus told his followers to pray, “Let your kingdom come,” it was clear that the Kingdom had not come at that time. Did it come when Jesus ascended to heaven? No, because both Peter and Paul said that after Jesus was resurrected, the prophecy at Psalm 110:1 was fulfilled in him: “The utterance of Jehovah to my Lord is: ‘Sit at my right hand until I place your enemies as a stool for your feet.’” ( Acts 2:32-34 ; Hebrews 10:12, 13 ) There was a waiting period.
23 For how long? During the 19th century, sincere Bible students calculated that the waiting period would end in 1914. (Regarding this date, see the Appendix pages 215-218.) World events that began in 1914 confirm that the calculation of these sincere Bible students was correct. The fulfillment of Bible prophecy shows that in 1914, Christ became King and God’s heavenly Kingdom began to rule.
What do you think of this? Do you consider it a lie?

JWs Not Allowed to Post on Websites?
by StandFirm inthis seems to be a favorite topic to bring up to any witnesses who post on any website where there are any opposers, either here or topix or anywhere.. so, here is the one and only place i will be discussing it.
who can prove that witnesses are specifically told not to post on websites about them?.

isaacaustin suggests I tell my elders I post here. Why would I do that? It is websites like this that claim that Witnesses must run to their elders to make their decisions for them. I, however, can make conscientious decisions for myself.
Although I'm not really interested in the idea you expressed: namely that "Witnesses must run to their elders to make their decisions for them," I am interested in a basic question regarding the elders: what would they do if they knew you were reading and posting on this site?
Regarding telling them, you asked "why would I do that?" Here's one reason why: I would like to know what they say or what action, if any, they take in response. If you tell them, it would put the question to rest. If you are not concerned about what they might say or do, it shouldn't be a big deal to tell them. It would take less than a minute to share the web address & your hobby with them. However, if you are hesitant to tell them, can you please tell me why?

I would ask her what point she is making by asking that question. If she feels it somehow shows that JW's are unique in their refusal to kill, I would let her know that she could ask the same question with Amish in place of JW's. Among the various religious groups in existence, I don't think JW's are unique in their refusal to kill.

In general, what is the ethically correct response if a minor tells you someone is molesting him/her?
by InterestedOne ini was thinking about what the elders are trained to do versus what i personally would do if a minor confided in me that someone was molesting him/her.
i'm not sure what the ethically correct first response should be.
my first thought is to contact some kind of law enforcement that specializes in investigating situations like this with people experienced in getting to the truth of the matter.

jgnat summed up my original intent well. I wanted to discuss a person's ethical responsibility, including elders since they are people too, and compare it with what elders are taught to do.

Oh. Right, I remember reading here a while back that a lot of Witnesses are into that stuff too.

I see a misunderstanding on one point as follows:
djeggnog wrote:
In her post, it was @Lady Lee that sought to distinguish between baptized and unbaptized children as if such mattered where child molestation occurs.
whereas LadyLee wrote:
We know from many experiences that if the accused is not a Witness or associated with the Witnesses they will be told to report. But if the accused is a JW they will most likely not tell them to report.
As I understand her, she was referring to the status (JW vs. non-JW) of the -accused-, not the victim. By "they," she meant the elders. Her point was that the status (JW vs. non-JW) of the suspect affects whether or not the elders report him/her. I understand her to mean that if the suspect is a JW, the elders are inclined to keep the matter private within the congregation and hesitate to call the police, whereas if the suspect is a non-JW, they would be more inclined to call the police right away. Basically it's like, if the suspect is a JW, be careful not to involve the police because it might shame Jehovah's name, but if the suspect is a worldly, by all means go at him/her with both barrels. I think that's called a double standard arising from a conflict of interest.

Glander - Certainly immediate reporting to the police was my first thought. However, I think the WT elders are taught to do otherwise, and I was wondering what ethical reasoning they would have for an alternate course. I was also wondering how often they do the right thing & report regardless of what the WT says, and how often they neglect to report based on some kind of weird religious reasoning.

Lady Lee - Thanks for the info b/c I was wondering what you meant by clergy privilege. So what about the notion you mentioned earlier about someone acting in a professional capacity like a camp counselor, etc. and a victim disclosing abuse? Would a JW elder be considered a "professional" if a minor comes to him for help? That's kind of what prompted my question. As a man, I was thinking, "If I were an elder, and a child came to me for help, what would I feel ethically obligated to do?" My first reaction is to think I should contact professionals in these matters & get the kid some help. Then I wondered if the WT would dream of suggesting I do otherwise. Then I got a little PO-ed & typed my question.
