If you check out the videos made by PublishingCult on youtube, he points out that the JW organization has a similarity to Amway in that the biggest consumers of the literature are the members. The literature is something tangible that members feel they should donate for. Members' main focus is the recruitment of new members. Since members are required to use WT literature, the more members are recruited, the more people are in the pool of guilt-driven donations for the tangible literature.

JW's and Amway
by Mad Dawg ini just happened to have amway come to mind.
i was involved in three different multi-level-marketing (mlm) scams: scamway, pre-paid legal, and 1st fitnesss.
i don't remember many jw's in cramway, but there were loads of them in the second two scams.

The article failed to mention the following from miseryloveselders when he came back from the elders school that may shed light on the situation:
Anyways, we were threatened at this school. I kid you not, threatened. When it came to education, the grand puba made the statement that if any elder, or anyone in his immediate family was attending a university, his qualications were to be reviewed. Here's the real kicker. If the other elders on that body did not review his qualifications, they were all culpable. That was the exact word he used, and in that context. Culpable. During that part, you could have heard a pin drop even on a carpeted floor. It was shocking. I'm sitting there thinking to myself, "did he just threaten us?"
I wonder what would happen if you went to a KH and asked an elder about it.

Here is a quote with 18 and 40 I found from Josephus "Antiquities of the Jews" which says:
When Evil-Merodach was dead, after a reign of eighteen years, Niglissar, his son, took the government, and retained it forty years, and then ended his life . . .
I see what you mean about the 40 though. Their chart looks stupid if the 40 is a known transcription error for what should have been 4.

The Oct 2011 public WT says that Josephus put Evil-SmellyDuck's reign at 18 years.
Is there a chance they got 18 from some other work by Josephus? I didn't see them provide a specific reference for where they got 18 from.

If you are interested in understanding their religion, and if you feel strong enough to resist psychological manipulation, you could do as Diest said and go to their meetings. You will find some interesting behavioral phenomena such as, if you ask them for the following literature that they currently use for the sake of understanding them better, they will most likely refuse to provide you with it:
Books:
Organized To Do Jehovah's Will
Benefit From Theocratic Ministry School Training
Shepherd The Flock Of God (previous version was called Pay Attention To Yourselves And All The Flock)
Periodicals:
Our Kingdom Ministry
It might be interesting to hear their response if you ask them why they will not provide you with this material. The main reference work they use to explain their doctrines is a two-volume encyclopedia-style book set called "Insight On The Scriptures." Also, the WT provides members with a CD-ROM containing most of the books and literature going back to around the 1960's. Once again, if you ask them for a copy of the CD-ROM, they will most likely refuse or insist that an active Jehovah's Witness print out for you only material from the CD-ROM that he/she feels is relevant to a particular question you might ask. This is one way they control the situation as you attempt to gather information.

Do JW Organization Mistakes Matter?
by InterestedOne inafter reading what concerned jw has to say, i gather that for him, if the jw organization is currently making any mistakes, those mistakes do not matter and are not worth naming, not even one.
i am completely baffled by this and would like to understand why a person would take this position.
concerned jw, can you please explain why you take this position?

leavingwt - OMG. When you put it that way, if it is a mistake, I would say it does matter. It's like this FDS idea is a license for the leaders to say and do anything with no immediate consequences from the group because the group believes the leaders will have to "give an account" in the future for any mistakes they make. OMG this is upsetting. Concerned JW, I need you to please explain yourself for this stance you take - that any mistakes the JW organization makes do not matter.
