Bizarre statement in April 2012 Awake
by dozy inas books go, it is tiny, but it is immeasurably great in its essence.
it can be carried in ones pocket, but if it were found in a library of 90,000 different books, it would probably turn out to be the most important one of them all.. wow a strong endorsement of the bible?
er no this is the wtbts we are talking about here.

I would think they'd want to get rid of that book. I tried to read it and got stuck where it says:
The oldest portion of the Bible predates all of the world's other religious writings. - chapter 1, paragraph 27.
I don't think that's even true, and the book is supposed to be about the religious history of mankind. Here is a thread about it from a while back.

"You should never look for/expect happiness in this world"
by ilikecheese inmy jw boyfriend says this all the time whenever i'm venting about life and some of its disappointments, career aspirations and how hard they are to make happen sometimes, problems with friends/family, or just random stuff that gets to me.
i'm not a negative person or anything; i only get moody occasionally.
i am a woman; it's kind of required.

"You won't find happiness in this world, and you shouldn't look for it."
I wasted over 15 years with that voice in the back of my head. I often felt confused because of it. It's good to acknowledge that things are not perfect, but the phrase quoted above goes too far. It is too extreme and can be mentally crippling. Although you are hearing it from a JW, in my life that voice came from the concepts I found in several versions of Christianity and their bibles. I am so glad I distanced myself from that religion.

Unwaivering Faith Disproved by 11 year old Niece.
by OnTheWayOut inme: well it's kinda complicated.
they think god exists according to various beliefs, but that he is all powerful and does all that is best for everyone.. (she collapsed in laughter at this for a full 2 minutes then composed herself).
mary: so they really think he is all powerful and uses his power to do what is best for everyone?.

garyneal - I'm pretty sure the Landover Baptist site is Christian satire. They've got it down so well that it almost seems real.

I don't know what the OP of that Evolution thread was trying to do either. I clicked on the username stopthetears, and that poster seems to have started many troll-like threads.

Yes OTWO, thank you for calling out the fake conversation floating around. Good OP.

Cofty, the Landover Baptist website has been around since I was in college in the mid 1990's. Back then it was meant to be Christian satire, kind of like the Onion. From the looks of it, it is still satire. It was one of many voices that helped me slowly wake up.

Evolution disproved by 11 year old niece

Assuming the OP is not a joke, if an 11 year old asked me what evolution is, I would let her know that I had not studied it myself and would encourage her to learn how the scientific method works and how evolution relates to it. If the story in the OP really happenend, then it looks to me as though the OP misrepresented both the scientific method and evolution, thereby delaying the 11 year old's progress in her understanding of the world around her. If she goes repeating that to others in the next few years of her life, she will make a fool of herself, and the OP will be partly to blame. I suggest you apologize to her.

Is there one Bible Prophecy.....
by Phizzy inin the form of a prediction, that can be proven to truly be a prediction,i.e written before the event, and it came true ?.
it would be good not to have time wasters on this thread in the form of the common ones that are brought up to demonstrate the bible's prophetic prowess, like cyrus being named , these have been debunked already.. but does there seem to be a genuine prophecy in there somewhere ?.

I could tell you were being lighthearted. I felt like entertaining it for a moment anyway b/c it reminds me of things I've heard my JW acquaintances say, but they weren't joking.

OTWO - My first thought regarding your example is to suspect that it was just an observation of nature. To say that no man will live beyond 120 years is not remarkable. I could say no cat will live beyond 40 years, but I wouldn't consider it a prophecy. It feels similar to the bible saying women will have pain in childbearing. To then say oh look it's true, just as the bible foretold, seems unimpressive.
