I appreciate all of the comments that have been made. Yes, I agree, the love for power is a motivator for some who chase this office.
But, some volunteer in this office to assist others. I have seen both tendencies in some men.
When I reached out, I got tired of sitting down and only commenting at meetings. I got tired of some men giving their personal opinions on the platform. I thought that if I joined the system, I could change the system. That is a concept that people thought of in the 70's.
But now that it's been over 10 yrs that I have stepped away from that office, I don't miss it. I could be just as helpful by standing in the shadows.
I have some that approach me for their issues, and they know that I will give them an honest, thoughtful response, with a twist of humor.
I have turned down 3 offers of becoming an Elder in the 10 yrs that I have stepped down.

Stingy people: Well that depends. If you are trying to sell to them, you have to be firm. They will come back in a few days if your price is right.
If they are in your circle of friends, just do things that don't require spending money. Go for a walk, talk, coffee shop.
Don't invest anything that you are not prepared to lose.

Let's face it. The Book Study was dying. Attendance was very poorly attended. I remember at Elder meetings with the CO, when the attendance issue came up, he asked us what we were doing about it. I finally asked him, what are the other congregations doing about it? He said, they are all in the same boat. Attendance was low all along the country. They had to close it with dignity. Some Book Studies consisted of only two publishers. The Elder and his wife. I kid you not. But, the end is near, you know.

JWs and medical marijuana
by dogon inwhere do jws stand on the new medical marijuana?
i know they would df for use of it for recreation but if a dr in california gave it as a perscript, and it was legal to buy and use for medical use, has anyone ran into this yet?.
