Yes, those are disturbing accounts, and they are all recorded thousands of years ago. The history of the beginnings of the Hebrews can be taken from these accounts. But, we wouldn't be doing half the stuff that they did in those years. We are not wearing their clothes, we don't have many wives, and incest is certainly not acceptable, infact it's disgusting. Killing our children are not good too. We drive cars, we work, we retire in North America, the land of the free. But, North America had some disturbing beginnings too. The history of this land was written, and the Bible was written. Thank goodness we know the past of so many things. The Good, the bad, and the ugly.

Idle question about Abraham and Human Sacrifice
by corpusdei ini don't have my usual resources in front of me, so i can't fact check this, but there's been something bothering me.
one of the things mentioned quite often as evidence of the wickedness and evil practices of the false religion that surrounded ancient israel is the practice of child sacrifice (baal and molech being the frontrunners as i recall).
but ...... didn't god tell abraham to kill his own son isaac as a human sacrifice?

Hey, Viola.
You are right. I hope that the boys in Brooklyn put this posting right on the Writing Department's desk, first thing tomorrow morning.

Hi New Chapter,
Yes, those are good questions, and they are fully disclosed to us in the Bible. So are the mistakes of the men who wrote about them. Jesus couldn't/wouldn't tell everything to his Disciples. He told them that they were not ready for certain information. I don't think that the account in Lot's stupid decision, or the sacrifice of Isaac was on the agenda. The Hebrews already were ok with that account. It was Paul that provided the continuing thread of those details (Abraham's covenant).

Sacrifices. Doesn't it tell us in Genesis that Adam and Eve sacrificed their/childrens possibilities to live forever. Fast forward to Abraham and we see something that Abraham was asked to do for a demonstration of faith. The account tells us that his faith/love for God was proven strong.
One would argue that Abraham's God was no different that the Pagon gods that demanded the same thing in the nations at that time. The society has taught that this drama was symbolic of Jesus sacrifice that was necessary to redeem mankind.
This perhaps maybe viewed as a cruel test by some, but, parents face trials with their children all the time today. There is the trial of trusting the Dr to do the right thing when your child needs a medical operation. No operation is 100 % safe. Yet, we have faith in the medical system to heal our child.
Let's face the fact here. The difference be Abraham's God and the nations gods is that Jehovah stopped the sacrifice. It wasn't carried through. Jehovah knew the kind of faith Abraham had, but we would have never known, neither would the angels, or Satan.

57% of all publishers pioneered in April
by hoser inwe had a letter read this afternoon after the watchtower study that said we had 54,408 auxillary pioneers in april and with the regular pioneers it totaled 64,855 in full time preaching in april.
57% of the publishers.. so my guess is that the co will come down hard on any congregation that didn't meet those numbers next april.. i think the 30 hour thing had it's desired effect.. hoser.

Yes, I heard the same letter read at our Service Meeting last week. I was a letter from the Canadian Branch, so it represented the figures for Canada.
I was also intrigued with the 9.9 publisher average as well, Hoser, my Canadian buddy, along with Tailsin who I consider it a priviledge to call my sister.
9.9 publisher average is not good, considering that to qualify as a servant you need to get 10 hrs per month. This hourly requirement is imposed on even the family members of a servant (MS, or Elder). They haven't revealed the monthly averages for the publishers because it has dropped in quite some time.

Yes, I agree that the internet, and firewalls and security settings have come along way since the inception of the internet.
Some may not have any security settings, and are probably using a cheap dial-up system that may exposed t them to some advertising that shows provocative material. I remember the 60's when I walked downtown, and the billboards advertising anything would show something that would be provocative. There was this poster about Raquel Welch...man that left an image burned in my mind till this day. But, I'm dealing with it.

There are many marriages that fail with members who are in our faith. The stats are there to prove that. My marriage in the truth has survived close to 40 years. I think that we have made the right decision in choosing one another. However, we know of couples, that we feel shouldn't be together.
We also know of some successful marriages with unbelievers. When the Society warns you about unbelievers they caution that the mate may cause pressure on you to celebrate religious holidays, prevent you from attending meetings....in other words prevent your life to continue with the Org. This does happen in some cases. However, there are some witness couples that do the same things to prevent you from advancing, and even if they don't celebrate holidays, they watch Christmas shows, etc. But, the holidays are really a time for family to get together, and who in there right mind would want to discourage that.,,,sorry, going off topic.
What you want is natural. Make sure that your mate is the right choice . In the faith, or out of the faith.

I know of someone that married an unbeliever, and wasn't marked. She was also a Pioneer, and served at Bethel as a part time helper from time to time. She also divorced her 1st unbelieving husband later on and married another unbeliever. Some of the Elders tried to snoop into her affairs, and she told them to but out, it was none of their business. The family moved away from that congregation and did much better in another congregation.
Then again, in my very own cong I know of a sister that intended to marry an unbeliever. The Elders did have a marking talk as was indicated above from the Org Book. However, in her case, her name was mentioned. This didn't coincide with the instructions in the ORG book. She did marry this person, and of course the family members who served in some capacity didn't attend. They were also instructed not to give a wedding gift. Later on the family member who did serve as an Elder, resigned as an Elder, even after obeying this counsel. He had just enough.
After you are married, the deed is done. "What ever God has yoked together, let no man put apart". The Elders have a narrow window to put pressure on a person to stop this sort of engagement, but when it is finalyzed, it's a brand new chapter.
Congratulations by the way, and may you have many happy years in your marriage.
