I don't think this verse describes an immediate death.
Try some other translation. . . for example: Every other translation on the planet. http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis+2%3A17&version=ESV
You will find that it says: "In the day that you eat from it" (Or 'in the very day' or 'on that day')
Now if someone sets out a bowl of fruit salad in front of me and says: "Careful that fruit salad is poisoned or cursed or something, and if you eat it, you will die within a day!"
And another guy says: "Nuh uh, you won't die from it. But it does taste pretty darn good. And it'll help you poo."
I then eat it, it tastes swell, have a great BM, and then live on for another 900 years or so. . . guess which guy I'm gonna call the liar.
Even if the first guy shoots me in the head 900 hundred years later, that doesn't meen the second guy lied.
And since god never mentioned that they'd live forever if they DIDNT eat it, how do you know they wouldn't have died 900 years later anyway, or even a week later? (And since we are questioning Yahwehs honesty here, even if he DID say they'd live forever otherwise, that doesn't mean he was telling the truth.)
