yesterday, a friend i'd helped with a problem at university came to see me.
he wanted to thank me for that help, and gave me a beautifully carved image of the boddhisattva guan yin for me to wear around my neck.. i like the buddhist guan yin story.
as a story of sacrifice and compassion it beats the similar jesus myth hands down.
I'm a bit confused about how destroying it would be beneficial.
The idea behind boycotting things is to make them less profitable to produce.
You don't buy a stolen computer because you are giving money to a theif. That gives the thief incentive to go steal more. The fact that the theft already happened does not make it ok to purchase it. But only because it gives incentive to the theif.
If the thief already sold it to someone, he has already gained the maximum profit from it he will ever get. And if the computer gets destroyed after he's already sold it, well all the more better, that's one less used computer flooding the market and possibly one more dude looking to buy a computer.
If you have a receipt, you could return it, that would harm the vendor selling ivory. But just destroying something after it's already been bought and paid for isn't going to help or harm the poaching industry at all.

Fulltime,
To be fair, those logitech ball mice are really freaking comfortable.
My dad bought one like 10 years ago when he was having hand problems.
in 2 years im surprising my wife for our 20th with a 2nd marriage in italy.
weve been planning to go for the last few years so she knows about the trip.
i decided that since im going to be in italy for a month and since i sit at a desk on my computer for 8 hours a day, i might as well spend that time productively and learn some italian.

Does your italian wife already know about this?

This is sexist.
If it was a guy passed out, I'd draw on a mustache with a sharpie.
And goshdarnit I'm gonna draw a mustache no matter what gender you are!
memorial is this tuesday.
while explaining the significance of consuming the booze and bread it is quite likely the speaker is going to make a passing remark about how jesus made sure that judas would not be present to partake.. of course he won't explain his reason for saying that.
but here is some food for thought while you're stuck sitting there listening to it:.
Memorial is this Tuesday. While explaining the significance of consuming the booze and bread it is quite likely the speaker is going to make a passing remark about how Jesus made sure that Judas would not be present to partake.
Of course he won't explain his reason for saying that. But here is some food for thought while you're stuck sitting there listening to it:
All of the gospels contradict each other on the chronological order of events.
Of the four gospels, only Luke claims to be in logical order. (Although the witnesses claim that the word 'logical order' does not neccesarily mean 'chronological'.)
(Luke 1:3) I resolved also, because I have traced all things from the start with accuracy, to write them in logical order to you, most excellent The·oph′i·lus,Also, out of the four gospel accounts only the book of John mentions Judas leaving during the evening at all.
Matthews account includes all 12 apostles plus Jesus sitting down to eat.
Then Jesus telling the group that one of them at that table would betray him.
Followed by them passing the emblems.
Followed by them leaving and going to the garden.
Followed by Jesus telling Peter he would betray him 3 times.
No mention is made of Judas leaving before or after the wine. But nothing to indicate he was still around during the passing.
Marks account includes all 12 apostles plus Jesus sitting down to eat.
Then Jesus telling the group that one of them at that table would betray him.
Followed by them passing the emblems.
Followed by them leaving and going to the garden.
Followed by Jesus telling Peter he would betray him 3 times.
Pretty much the same as Matthew. No mention of Judas leaving. But nothing to indicate he was still around during the passing.
Lukes account includes all 12 apostles plus Jesus sitting down to eat.
First thing that happens is they pass the emblems.
Followed by Jesus telling telling the group that one of them at that table would betray him.
Followed by Jesus making a covenant with them.
Followed by Jesus telling Peter he would betray him 3 times.
Followed by them leaving and going into the garden.
Quite different from Matthew and Mark, this time Judas' presense is specifically mentioned AFTER the passing of the emblems. Again, no mention is made of him leaving at all.
Johns account includes all 12 apostles gathered in the upper room.
Jesus washes their feet and gives them a lesson.
Followed by Jesus telling the group that one of them would betray him.
Followed by Judas 'immediately' leaving. ("Therefore, after he received the morsel, he went out immediately. And it was night.")
Followed by Jesus telling Peter he would betray him 3 times.
Followed by Jesus giving a speech.
Followed by them leaving and going into the garden.
So John is very different from the rest. He's the only one to mention Judas leaving. Also he doesn't mention the passing of the emblems at all.
So what evidence do the witnesses claim to prove Judas left BEFORE the passing of them emblems? When the only gospel to mention Judas leaving at all, doesn't say when it happened in relation to the passing of the emblems?
Simple cherry picking. Clearly some of the gospels have to be out of order. So they choose to believe that Luke is completely jumbled and John is only partially out of order, but not out of order when it talks about Judas leaving right after Jesus says he will betray him.
One quick final point about the use of the word 'immediately' in John. When it says that Judas went out immediately after receiving the morsel.
The witnesses have no problem believing that the bible actually means what it says here. And you'd think that when the Bible says something happened immediately it means. . . well 'immediately'.
But when it's inconvenient for them, they are willing to redefine 'immediately' to mean 'a couple days later'.
They don't choose to do that in this case.
from this weeks watchtower study:.
in what sense has jehovah felt regret?.
on a number of occasions, the bible mentions that jehovah felt regret.
From this weeks Watchtower study:
IN WHAT SENSE HAS JEHOVAH FELT REGRET?
On a number of occasions, the Bible mentions that Jehovah “felt regret.” (Jonah 3:10; Gen. 6:6, 7; Judg. 2:18; 1 Sam. 15:11)
Since God’s activity is perfect, his regret is never because of a mistake on his part. (Num. 23:19; Deut. 32:4)
Rather, in Hebrew, to feel regret can mean to change one’s mind or intention. For example, because Jehovah is reasonable, adaptable, and merciful, he is willing to alter his intended actions toward erring ones in response to their repentance and the changes that they make.—Jer. 18:7-10.
So again we have the Watchtower just redefining words to suit their needs. How can 'feeling regret' not mean 'feeling regret'? Because we said so.
Their explaination is just so darn short and vapid. It's like they're not even trying anymore.
In 1 Sam. 15:11 it says: "I regret that I have made Saul king, because he has turned away from me and has not carried out my instructions."
How is that different from the regret of any other person? He made an important decision: Choosing the first King of Israel. He made a lousy choice, and regretted it later.
You can't chaulk it up to 'altering his intended actions' if it's an action he has ALREADY taken.
I also find it funny that the 'proof text' they cite to prove that God can't feel regret, is actually quoting a FALSE prophet, Balaam. The rest of that SAME verse implies that when God says he's going to do something he doesn't change his mind.
And actually the King James Version pretty clearly shows that the Watchtower explaination is complete garbage, because it says: " God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?"
One of these scriptures has to be wrong. Either it's the one that says god doesn't change his mind, or it's the ones that say he does.
ALSO, they claim that, since his actions are perfect, his regret is never because of a mistake on his part. Grow up god! Take some responsibility for your actions!
How can you know EVERYTHING, be all powerful, be able to foresee the future, but not be able to be held responsible for your own decisions?
And yet us humans, who don't know everything and cannot see the future, have to take responsibility for any poor decisions we make?
End of rant.
