WikiLeaks nominated for Nobel Peace Prize
by Satanus inhttp://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011/02/03/3128494.htm.
'snorre valen, a member of the norwegian coalition government's socialist left party, has nominated the website, saying it is a gauge of transparency in the world.. he says jailed chinese dissident liu xiaobo won the nobel peace prize last year for his struggle for human rights, democracy and freedom of speech in china.. mr valen says those are the very same values wikileaks is committed to globally.'.
cool, eh?.

Things I have heard about California JW's
by mamalove inafter reading the two piece bikini discussion and the comment about calipornea, it reminded me of something i used to hear about the jw attitude in general there.
that it was extremely lax compared to mid west or other areas.. people were supposedly not df'd when they would most definitely been elsewhere, and more "worldy" type of dress and grooming were tolerated well.. is this correct at least in some areas?
if so, do you think it has to do with money, or the general culture there?.

EmptyInside - "It was always about sisters wearng leather skirts out in service and brothers wearing earrings."
Leolaia - "I never thought about any California effect before, but my JW aunt who's in her 70s has a gay daughter and although my aunt is an uber-Witness, and field service and meetings and everything JW-related is his life, she has never shunned her daughter (who also was raised a Witness but left when she could). In fact, she has accepted her long-time partner as family. This has particularly come clear to me after the two broke up; my aunt wishes they were back together and still does lunches with her daughter's ex."
White Dove - "In the NW, it's listen and take it with a grain of salt, obey if it is reasonable to do so."
honorsthesis - "The term, "happy birthday", is often even used without shame."
Even if half of the shit we've been hearing is true, no wonder GB2.0 is in full-on siege mode, and tightening the screws.

WTBTS Elder & Ministerial Servant Problems
by JW GoneBad ini attended a recent ministerial servant k m school on the east coast and the main school instructor mentioned among other things (part entitled: 'objective of the km school course') that the total number of ministerial servants is seriously less than it should be.
in times past the ratio of m ss to elders was much more than it is today.. in the u.s. apparently the total number of elders is 88,500+ as opposed to m ss 65,000. the numbers show & numbers don't lie: the society is running out of spiritual men.
the instructor stated that this is a new downward trend that has (in so many words) the society worried.. the next speaker (part entitled: 'why we must be spiritual men') added that in his years as a traveling servant the pool of m ss has always been much, much larger than it is today.

It's amazing how silly some doctrines can become when taken to their logical extreme.
Here's one of my favorites;
Due to Adam's sin, all humans are moving further and further away from "physical perfection"; therefore, each successive generation of children will be uglier and stupider than the last...

JWs Celebrating Brithdays
by Franklin Massey ini keep hearing of more and more jws that are celebrating their birthdays or, doing "special days" for their children on the day of their birth.
i'm sure this has always been done but what interests me is that many people aren't ashamed to admit it since they have used their own fully functioning minds to figure out that the society's birthday ban doesn't hold up.
one young couple with two kids (he's an ms, she's an ex-pioneer who dropped off the list to tend to the kids) explained it to me this way.... "the happiest days of our lives include the births of our children.

dozy - "What I especially find puzzling is that part of the WTBTS justification for a ban is that birthdays give undue prominence to an individual."
That was the "official" reason.
The actual reason was to limit JWs' association with non-JW family and friends, to - in effect - separate (i.e. alienate) them further from the "World".
Can't have the R&F start thinking that life outside the hermetic seal of the WTS might actually be worth living, now.

GB2.0 is not loosening its grip.
However, it is arguably losing its grip...

ABSOLUTE PROOF THAT DINOSAURS AREN'T MILLIONS OF YEARS OLD!
by Mary inyesterday, i went out for lunch with my parents when my mother made mention of something she had read in the newspaper about some new discovery of species that went extinct millions of years ago.
she asked my father what method is used to determine the age of something, because of course, this flies directly in face of the biblical account of life on this planet being only a few thousand years old.. anyway, my father related a story that some brother he ran into recently at the assembly told him.
this [unnamed] brother related a story told to him by another [unnamed] elder who knew an [unnamed] circuit serpent who was "really chummy with one of the [unnamed] executives at the royal ontario museum".

Even back when I was a dutiful JW, I thought the idea that there was a vast diabolical athiest conspiracy to debunk Genesis was really f**king stoopid.

Human Ancestry Made Easy.
by whereami inthis video traces our migration out of africa and explains, through dna evidence, how humans colonized the world.
it is part of the made easy series of videos that show the evidence of our origins, from the big bang onwards.

cofty - "If fundamentalists want to reject the evidence of our emergence from Africa 60,000 years ago they also must reject the technology that convicts murderers and rapists or that proves paternity. It is exactly the same science."
I'm often amazed that so few people bring this up.
But then, fundamentalism is not evidence- or technology-based. It is ideology-based.
Partly why I suspect the WTS still holds to the two-witness / judicial committee format. Trials in ancient times were less about establishing innocence or guilt (in most cases, guilt was already assumed), and more about determining repentance. The "innocent-until-proven-guilty" concept is actually a relatively recent development in jurisprudence.
Which explains why authoritarian regimes don't really like it.
