It isn't for me. Ok, I was raised Lutheran and I am certain that contributes to my total lack of a "comfort zone" with the charismatics. LOL. However, I've visited many different churches and I can't stand: anyone screaming AMEN from behind me (I jump every time), arm wavers, swayers, dancers...and tongues. Let me explain why the wavers and tongues gets me. I went with a friend to her church, the waving and tongues were like a competition to see WHO was the "most spiritually gifted" and I just wasn't comfortable. She asked, "Why don't you raise your arms when you sing?" I didn't know it was a requirement...lol. I want a program when I walk in the door, and I want to know whats going on, I don't want any surprises or alter calls. I don't want to see people swaying, waving, dancing, snakes or speaking in tongues...I like a "speak only when spoken to" policy! As in...the Pastor says______. And the Congregation replies______. Yeah, a liturgical service. I have no problems with people who are charismatic, It just makes me uncomfortable. I've heard just the opposite though, people who really dislike the formality of a liturgical service.

The Misery Of Being a Dub
by SYN inhow do you cope?
i don't even vaguely remember.
i've been browsing through some more pln threads, and they all have one aspect in common - they are so empty.

SYN,
May I add a "never been a JW" observation? I watched my mom change, much in the way you described as, "dying a massive internal IQ loss." Couldn't have come up with a better description myself. She no longer thinks things through (on her own) ANY conversation that she finds difficult, she will say, "I'll ask sister-so-in-so about THAT" However, those moments are rare because, I think ego has a lot to do with the zealous JW...she'd rather get hit in the head with a rock, than admit she doesn't know or she is wrong. THAT is the one thing the WT offers...a pre-made, formula answers.

Your best money saving tips here, please
by LDH inlarc's thread on coupons gave me this idea.. we all know coupons can save you a few dollars or more.
but how do you save real money???.
do y'all have any tips that you wanna share?

LDH,
Let's see:
1. Use the "pantry principle" buy in bulk, buy loss leaders, stock up on the items you use at the lowest possible price...this allows you to never run out and HAVE to buy items when they are not on sale.
2. Know, what your having for dinner the night before...avoids lots of last minute trips to the store and/or fast food dinners.
3. Never buy, what you can easily make...things like bisquick, which is overpriced flour, baking powder and shortening. Frozen biscuits, pancakes and waffles also are super cheap to make, but cost considerably more money to buy pre-made (plus they taste nasty).
4. Know what a "good deal" is...sometimes a "sale" doesn't automatically mean a good price. Shop around, call around for prices on spendy items...find out about price matching policies, this will save time and money, and keep you from driving way out of your way to get to the store that has the "sale"
5. Maintenance is cheaper than repairs...don't wait till something is broken: cars!
6. Avoid credit card purchases like the plague.

Patriotic Baptists -- Crazy!
by Yadirf inthis is the web site of a certain bethel baptist church: http://www.bethelmac.org/.
notice the two waving american flags at the bottom of their home page.. .
certainly a nationalistic bunch, aren't they!.

It is my understanding this is the church that has offered a memorial service for the Bryant family...right? To use Farkel's phrase, what about "common decency?" I find it sad that the kindness of strangers is being used as platform for mud slinging. As mentioned, is the flag any "worse" than the UN fiasco? I don't think so.

Churches...would a JW go
by KistByQpid inunder what (if any) circumstances would a jw go to a church?
is it the building itself or is it church services they have an aversion to?
can they go under circumstances that are not neccessarily considered "worship"?

Under what (if any) circumstances would a JW go to a church? Is it the building itself or is it church services they have an aversion to? Can they go under circumstances that are not neccessarily considered "worship"? I can think of weddings, funerals and in Portland, several of the larger churches are used by private colleges (Concordia, George Fox, Warner Pacific) for graduations? Or would they likely decline all invitations on the basis that because it is being held in a "church" they simply can not be part of it? Is it all painted with the big Babylon-brush and a big no-no?

Good question. Maybe because it is cram packed with "worldly" people? The girl scouts have four goals: deveolpment of self potential, relations with others, development of values and contributing to society. Doesn't sound too horrible to me. When I was a girl, I LOVED it...it was a blast. We learned useful things, made friends and had fun.
I feel so blessed that my mom didn't get into the JW thing when I was a kid! I understand what your saying about family "opinion" though.

Hi Dakota,
What a small world! I live close to 162nd/Evergreen area. Yes, the elder they interviewed, was a little "lacking" in my opinion. The reporter asked, "Could the practice of JW shunning, have something to do with the McMinneville tragedy?" Well, the elder TURNED the whole thing around. He said, that those witnesses who are DAed, shun their JW relatives! I was like HUH??? He went on to say that the Bryants had surviving family members who were still "JWs in GOOD STANDING" who gives a sh*t...he didn't say a word about the fact there there were six people dead.
