Never having been a JW...I just don't get it. My fanatic JW mom wears her sister "title" like a badge of honor. Her calling everyone in the JW "club" Brother/Sister. The first time I heard the Brother/Sister thing I found it both ridiculous and nauseating at the same time.

Being called brother/sister in public places
by JH inhow did you like being called brother or sister, when you were in public.
i remember once i was inside a bank waiting in line, and all of a sudden , a brother also waiting in line, said to me quite loud, hello brother x .
i felt like a jerk, being called brother in front of everyone there.

Help! Neighbor starting a study
by Trotafox ini am so furious.
the very zealous elderly pioneer sister who lives across the street (alberta) has been canvassing the neighborhood for studies.
i watch her walk up and down the street and being very friendly and helpful with her neighbors (all the while preaching to them i'm sure).

I WISH someone would have seen, said, acted upon the JW predators that came knocking on my mom's door. Of course my dad had just passed away and she was "home alone" for the first time in her adult life...KNOCK KNOCK. Unfortunately, no such neighbor existed and I didn't know until it was too late. I now have a zealous JW mom who trolls neighborhoods looking for easy targets ie: emotional misfits. She can't have a DECENT conversation with me or my children, without preaching and bad mouthing the following: the "world", materialistic people, CATHOLICS, "So-called Christians" Idolatry, etc. Honestly, there is absolutely NO NEUTRAL ground, NO SUBJECT we can talk about, without her pathetically trying to "witness" to me. I can no longer leave my kids alone with her. The last time my 8 year old daughter spent the night...she chastised her for the fact that she was wearing a small cross my husband and I had given her. She ranted and raved about crucifiction and the whole cross vs. stake bull and TERRIFIED my daughter with her sheer emotional and fanatic behavior and hideous WT "artwork" She had one of her "sisters" come over and they actually tried to have a "study" with my daughter...without my permission. My daughter LOVES Grandma and didn't know what to do or say when Grandma told her to sit down and listen...that what mom and dad had taught her was a LIE...that she wasn't going to Heaven. Some people have NO concept of what it is to respect other people's boundaries...the JW's are some of the biggest offenders I've ever seen.
I wish there would have been a neighbor, who would have seen this in it's EARLIEST stages...maybe my familie's life wouldn't be the mess it is. Bless you for caring. No one can tell me the WT isn't destructive...it is...if you don't "go along to get along" the next tactic is to divide and conquer EVEN if it means destroying your family in the process...

boomboom car stereos...
by DanTheMan ini live in klumbus ohio, in a neighborhood that ain't da hood but it ain't the 'burbs either.. it seems that if you are a male under 25 in my area and you don't have a 10,000 watt car stereo that shakes the whole neighborhood, well, you're nothing.. i don't get hip-hop culture.
i think that it is a screaming commentary on the cultural rot in the usa.. could someone comfort me or help explain the appeal of this pervasive sub-culture?
the depravity of it all makes me feel so hopeless sometimes.. maybe i'm a little too narrowly caucasian in my outlook.

Dakota...I agree. Somehow, they don't realize they're not as cool as they think they are. Get this: when I was looking for commercial space to lease ...I was waiting for the leasing agent to show up for our appointment. Well, an employee from Blockbuster's (next door to where I was looking)...comes out on her break and opens the doors to her car and cranks up the "tunes" Pretty soon, I'm hearing clear as can be...Mother F, REPEATEDLY! The leasing agent pulls up...she turned beat red, apologized to me and promised me that Blockbuster would be recieving a call right away. I guess someone at Blockbuster forgot to remind this gal (at least 22-23 years old) that it isn't good for public relations/sales to offend everyone within earshot and with kids...Then again some things are simple common courtesy. Guess it isn't as common as it used to be!

I hear ya. I don't get it either. For me, it isn't so much the "music" ...if you can call it that...as a matter of fact it could be any music from absolutely ANY genre. What annoys me is the sheer arrogance that these little punks think that I (and everyone within 6 city blocks) want to be serenaded. What is even more comical, is when you know the stereo system is worth more than the entire vehicle...now there's a case of screwy priorities.

My JW mom and her oddball "brothers and sisters" NEVER cease to amaze me. I own a Christian bookstore that carries curriculum for homeschoolers. Today I'm LITERALLY minding my own business, when "sister-so-in-so" comes in. WEIRD I'm thinking...I'm watching her eyeballing some curriculum she obviously finds "offensive"...some of the publishers a la carte "bible study" and others integrate "bible" into all subjects. Her teenage son sees something and next thing I know they are rattling on in spanish. Then came the BOMB..."sister-so-in-so" makes a "living" placing those .25 cent candy machines in local businesses. She wanted to know if I'd be interested in letting her place one...no commission for me of course...cause she hardly makes "anything" and afterall she'd be doing ME some kind of favor! Yeah...cause, "Parents like having something for the kids to do while they shop." I told her I didn't have the space. She wanted me to think about it...no prob...so think I did! Doesn't it bother her squeeky clean JW sense of superiority and spiritual cleanliness to (in an indirect way) do business with Babylon??? Is she a weird duck OR is this typical JW thinking?

JWs Are the Cleanest People on Earth
by comforter inone benefit that jws get from being jehovah's people is the knowledge of good hygiene.
before i came to be a witness, i did not think it was important to brush my teeth thoroughly or wash under my arms real good and use deodarant.
i also tended to be a pack rat with a messy car.

In terms of logical fallacies...a "hasty generalization" refers to the mental gymnastics of drawing conclusions on the basis of insufficient evidence. Your claim echos WT wishful thinking. Just because an individual OR organization (yep...this includes the WT) claims something as "the truth" or better yet, "The Truth" doesn't make it so. All sorts of prejudices are a result of this type of thinking...
As a worldly person...I don't "know" Jw's are the cleanest people on earth. This is your prejudice and perception at work. Perceptions are the stuff opinions are made of...and we all know what they say about those.

Your "need" for a WT hygiene tutorial is only surpassed by your apparant ignorance regarding logical fallacies. Your so-called rationale is what every junior high school debate student knows as a HASTY GENERALIZATION.

How many here work for yourselves?
by Leander insome of you may have read some of my earlier posts about my job issues, well i followed the advice that some of you contributed and i'm on my way to starting my own business.
i have a fairly good strategy that i will attempt to follow but i'm back again for more advice.. my first goal is to obtain a business license and establish a business name.
tomorrow i'm going to spend a few hours at the library and try to read up a bit on the different ways to proceed with a small business.

Forgot to add...your tax ID will be your social security number ONLY if your business is a sole proprietorship. If you choose to incorporate, you will most likely have to deal with your state's Secretary of State's office. They will need the IRS's form SS-4 (you can download it on the IRS's website) or just pick it up at their office when you fill out your articles of incorporation. Call your state's Department of Licensing or check their web site...most have fairly detailed lists of what steps you need to follow...which forms you'll need...and which offices you'll need to file with and in which order, to get your business license.

Yep...hubby and I have been self-employed for close to nine years now. I would recommend reading EVERYTHING you possibly can on business structures NOW. Understand all the pros/cons of each and every structure. For simplicity, the sole proprietorship is probably the easiest and cheapest to start BUT there are big drawbacks. The biggest drawback is that YOU the individual are responsible for any and all liabilities incurred by your company. Partnerships are easy to form as well BUT I'd strongly advise NOT getting involved in any partnership. The incorporated structure IS more paper work/money to set up. However, the advantage to a corp is that they are their OWN separate legal entity. This structure protects you and your personal assets. There are Limited Liability Corps, S corps and C corps. You need to do your homework and see which one gives you the best advantage. In my case, my husband's business is set up as a C-corp...so is mine...However, it is done so that one is a subsidiary of the other. This relationship between corporations is done by one owning stock in the other...big benefit. If it is possible to start TWO businesses (even if they are not related in service or product) I'd suggest you take a look at this option. Let's say one of your business makes a big profit...and the other doesn't. The subsidiary set up allows you to to file a consolodated tax return so that the profits of one, offset the losses in the other. In other words, if the losses in ONE corp equals the profit of the other...you have absolutely no tax liability because the net profit (combination of the two, from the two corps amounts to zero. Take some time to consider tax strategies and as already mentioned...consult a CPA <---a good cpa will cost you BUT tax ignorance will cost you more. Good luck in your business venture!

Volunteer Work is Never Encouraged
by Mary ini always find it so annoying whenever there's a wt study on the good samaritan.
no one at the hall ever suggests that the idea behind it, is that we should be helping our "enemies" in a charitable way, such as feeding them, clothing them, helping them out in a physcial way.....nope they always turn it around to where it only means we should be preaching to our enemies, cause lord only knows, actually helping someone out in a charitable way means less than nothing in the organization.. anyhoo, the last time we had an article on that (couple of years ago), i specifically put up my hand and said "this is not talking about preaching to our enemies.
the samaritan did not preach to the jew nor vise versa.

I volunteer at a Christian non denominational food pantry. Sometimes the work is breaking down cardboard...other times it's nasty...like picking out the good fruit from the spoiled stuff. My JW mom made some smart @ss remark that this "so-called" Christian organization would NEVER change THE WORLD. I've gotten pretty good at ignoring some of her more inflammatory remarks. BUT I was like HUH??? Who said they were trying to do anything other than feed needy families? She asked me if it was like a mission, where those needing help had to endure a sermon BEFORE recieving anything. I said, "nope." WELL....Irony has it's moments....it wasn't a month later, she asked me if I could see about getting some "help" for "sister so-in-so." Apparantly, sister so-in-so's husband walked out on her and left her high and dry. I gave my mom the pantry's address and phone number...haven't seen sister-so-in-so BUT it takes some degree of moral dishonesty and nerve to belly up to Babylon's trough...don't ya think?
