i recently enlisted in the army as active duty, havnt left yet, and am wondering if it is concientiously okay to do this as a christian?

keep in mind there is a good chance i will see combat.

i have already made my decision but am interested to hear others views.

I think it is interesting that Christians will, or at least have in the past, go to war in the name of God and Christ but will ignore all of Jesus' teachings. In fact, they usually do the opposite. Sadly it will continue until people stop just following the teachings that suit them most. Oh and I was not disagreeing with you before just mentioning how easy it is for people to do horrible things in God's name. It definately is not God's fault man does bad things in his name either.

Why do you believe the bible? or not?

when i began questioning the religion i used the bible and their own statements to prove them wrong.

now, recently, i have began to realise that maybe the only reason i put any faith in the bible is because i was always raised to.. so my question is, after leaving the watchtower, what was it that made you decide the bible was worthy of belief?.

i am not asking about any continuing belief in god or disbelief, i am more conscerned about the first step (to me) right now of the bible itself.

What do you mean noone followed the mosaic law? I have never even thought about it, but is it true? and what does that mean? just another example of how unfaithful isreal was or is there something more?

Chalam and tec, I think you both bring up good points but I have never considered a soldier as judging. he just follows orders and despite any consequences can always disobey ones he thinks are over the line (in theory)

Wouldn't you say that after 2000 years of 'Christians' being in Armies from nearly all countries and forms of government and forming Church Armies that they

just do it irregardless of ethos.

deisgns I also think that just because others do something doesnt provide proof its good or bad. its a non sequitor. when I left JWs they continually asked where I would go since everyone else was 'obviously' worse. I just responded that that did not make them right.

PSacramento, while I agree that war in the name of god is the stupidist thing ever it is still so easy for people to convinve others that god wanted it. All one needs is the people to believe god is talking to them then they have ample OT evidence to show god is not above having his people fight guesome battles over almost any reason. Imagine those that follow the GB blindly, the GB just has to print a few articles and can have total blind support from the unquestioning members

If the bible had been so definate about not being a soldier, it looks to me like it would have clearly said so.

james_woods you bring up a good point that I think covers many different subjects that people make into big issues, eg JWs and birthdays

brotherdan Paul's words were so instrumental in helping me finally break free from the borg. His point there makes so much sense and can be applied to help one with any problem in life. It is (almost) surprising the witnesses never picked up on it.

Sorry Heaven I should have used the word examples instead of proof, but you seem to have gotten the idea. My starting to question the bible began with contradictions such as what u meantioned about Christ, If they saw it first hand and couldnt get it right how can we trust anything else they say?

PSacramento I totally agree about intentions. If, forinstance, someone was threatening to kill everyone in you nation and set foot on your soil I think most would have no problem with that. But if your country is a modern-day Nazi Germany trying to conquer the world most would have a problem. As too the specific job because I have a family I tried to choose one with less of a chance of combat but there is a reason everyone is given a gun...

So far no one has mentioned seperateness from the world. I have never heard that view explained in a way that makes any sense or doesnt involve an incredable amount of reading things into the scriptures that just arent there.

OTWO your advice is very good. Ive tried it before, only problem is my wife doesnt believe god is telling me to do things. its okay shes just ignorant :p

To respond to the nazi argument, you have to remember at that time hitler had the churches support and socially the political systems of the other countries were considered evil (damn capitalism). Also the soldiers were never officially looked on as bad individually unless they committed war crimes.

I think everyone should support their respective country as much as they can (so long as that country is America)
