Lady Lee, I do not know the nature of the mental problems of family members, except for my mother. Carrie spent most of her life in a state mental hospital, so I never saw her. I did not know the cousin, and George died before I was born. George's problems may be of a different nature. My grandfather once told me that George got kicked in the head by a horse when he was a boy, and a piece of his brain fell out. So, neurelogical impairment may have been a major factor in his case. Regarding the family, they were all kind, gentle people, so I see no signs childhood abuse affecting them.

Berta was born in Pitt county N.C. In 1914, the family lived in Evertts N.C. In 1915 they lived in Edgecombe county. It appears that they moved back to Pitt ccounty by 1920.

Earnest, as Farkel pointed out, Bonnie's testemony regarding Berta's background is very weak and vague. She claims that Berta was a dietician in Ohio, but was unemployed. I find that pecular. Either Bonnie lied to exagerate Berta's credentials, or she was simply ignorant of the facts. Berta was never a dietician in Ohio. Miscelaneous: (1) Berta came to Bethel in June of 1938. This information is in the divorce papers. (2) When Bonnie said that she knew Berta for 10 years, she may have referring to the time up until the trial. I don't know when Berta became a Bible student, so I can't say when Berta and Bonnie became friends.

There was no violence or alcholism in the clan. There was a history of mental illness. Berta's sister Carrie spent most of her life in a mental hospital. Her brother George also spent time in mental hospital from time to time. My mother's cousin Jack's son spent time in one as well. My own mother spent time in a mental hospital. It first happend whan I was ten, and continued about every five years until I was 25. She got on lithium at that time and never had another episode. Regarding Berta, I don't think that she had any signs of mental illness or child abuse. Well, if you consider her being the only daughter that had to be spanked because of her rebelious nature, then perhaps.

Ernest, I find your analysis to be very interesting. Your case regarding Bonnie is well presented. You provide a lot of detail in this regard, some of which I knew, and some I didn't. With regard to the detail, you made a mistake regarding Berta, which does lower your credability. You state that she was a dietician before coming to Bethel. There is no evidence of this whatsoever. In the 1930 Census she was listed as a clerical worker. She did not have a high school education or any specialized training. Rae's daughter Sue told me that Berta was considered the least intelligent of the sisters. She was above average. I can attest to that via personal observation, but the rest of the family was absolutely brilliant.

i was at twickenham many years ago (about 20) and went to the admin area to get info about serving where the need was great (great plan that turned out to be) anyway there were two elderly yet autstere brothers standing at the steps to the main office area looking as though they owned the place, they had a real air of seniority and importance about them, i have no idea who they were, yet sense they were senior one was english the other american.. .

I had two experiences that really bothered me. I went to a convention in New York and went to session that was about applying to Bethel. There were about 30 of us there. The brother in charge was real nasty. He sounded more like a Marine drill instructor, that a loving brother. The next experience was when I went to Bethel to visit a friend. I was standing in the area before you get something to eat. I guess I was standing in this elderly gentleman's way. Well, he was not a gentle man, and did not act kindly towards me. He snarled at me and told me to move.

What happened to JoJ? I addressed the issue of mental illness, and all of a sudden, he had fallen silent. Where is he, and why won't he respond? I would suspect that he has nothing to contribute on the subject. He uses hit and run tactics, and is unwilling to engage in meaningful dialogue.
