exjw,
After you consult with Dad, I sure would like to know what he has to say.
A lot of his answer will depend on how long he was a JW, and how much he remembers about this subject.
I don't think that they talk about things like this any more at the book study, since they have have dumbed down the religion.

I find your analysis of the events to very interesting.
However, your first statement is just wrong. If you read my words, I stated very clearly that this concept was burned in my brain. It is something that I remember 40 years later. I am right and you are wrong on this issue. -

I have been out for 40 years now. Just the other day, I was thinking about something that was burned in my brain. It has been a long time so, I might not it get all right. If I am wrong on any point, please correct me.
I am referring to Daniel 5: 25 - 28. I was taught that the hand writing on the wall was a prediction of 1914. Well, let us take a look see at the scriptures.
The WT wrote that the writing on the wall, Mene Mene, Tekel, Peres. Meant time, times and half a time. Well already we have a problem Mene is written twice, so that adds up to two - well, that is what I learned in school. Tekel, meaning times is an undfined term. Does it mean two times or 22 times? Who knows. I am fine with Peres as a half a time.
OK, let's suppose that the WT has it nailed down correctly, which is unlikely. They say that we have to multiply 3 and half by 2 to get 7, because 7 is God's number. Then we have to take seven and turn into years. However, they are not solar years of 365 days, but lunar years of 360 days, hence the number of 2520.
Does it get any goofier than this?????? -

Shunning in the 60's
by Bryan inas you know i just returned from visiting my great-aunt whom i hadn't seen in 40 years (she's still a jw).
i asked her if she shunned my mother when she was disfellowshipped in 1964. she said they society did not promote shunning at this time.
is this true?

Back in those days, there was not much disfellowshipping going on. It happened now and then, but it was not a regular occurence. That was back in "Happy Days", when most people of all races, creeds, and religion lived nice lives.
Sex, drugs and rock and roll? Sex has always been around. Rock and roll was kicking in, but we did not have drugs, back then. -

My wife's mother was born in Eastern Kentucky. We went there to look up family history, sometimes known as geneology. Well, my wife's mother's maiden name was Combs, and there a whole bunch of them in Brethet County. They used to call it "Bloody Brethet". They spilled more blood that the Hatfield's and the McCoys on the border of West, by Gawd, Virgina and Pennslyvania.

JAVER, oops I meant JAVA. JAVER is an Earl Pitts expression. Earl is a Southwestern Ohio type of guy. I am going to vote for him as our next President.
As Earl often says, "This Earl, so Pitts off." He also says, after his editorial, "Wake up Americuca.' -

Personal Accomplishments
by Uzzah infor years, the watchtower drilled into us that we are just specs of unimportant dust.
personal pride was touted as being something wrong and a trait of the devil.
that mentality stifles creativity and initiative, which i suppose is what they want.

Way back when, they used they used the term of Servant. In the late 60's or early 70's, they changed it to Overseer. Now let us look at these two words. A servant serves others. A doctor might have more status than most of his patients, but nonetheless, he/she is there to serve. In the same way, a Congregation Servent was there to serve, as was the Circuit Servant, and the District Servant.
Now, let look at the term of Overseer. This term has whole different conotation. An Overseer is like a factory foreman that must check out people's work.
Quite a difference, isn't it? -

Another thing about Selties, they bark a lot.
Out in the coutnry, a family had beautiful Shelties. The neighbors complained about their barking and the dogs had their voice boxes removed. Very sad indeed.
