Jesus told his desciples to be ready. Then he told a concrete story to help fix his idea in their heads. That's all there is to it. He was advising individuals, not predicting good and bad organizations, now or at any time.

Who really is the FDS?!?!?!?!?
by LDH inhey all, hope you're having a great year so far.. before witnet was closed down, there was an interesting discussion regarding the fds and their failed prophecies.
i asked a question, but unfortunately there wasn't enought time to get everyone's view.. so i'll rephrase my posts, and wait to hear from y'all.. if we are so quick to say that the fds is a false prophet because of some failed prophecies (even tho they say they don't prophecy, we all know better) then how would you explain the bible book of jonah?.
a faithful prophet, jonah, followed (after much trial and tribulation to himself) jehovah's command to declare destruction on the city of nineveh.

by larc ini've really enjoyed the conversations about music, poetry, movies, books and short storys.
i thought it would be interesting to read about little known news from around the world, so i'll start with some from the tiny dot where i live on this ball of mud we call earth.. i just read in the paper this morning that the people of port clinton, ohio are celebrating new years by dropping a 500 pound fiberglass walleye fish into lake erie.
we people here in ohio have a certain panache.. the tornado in xenia, ohio this summer missed my daughter's house by a block and a half.

RHW,
Can you believe Waiting? You talk about your nice place and she's still bragging about her bugs. You know, Waiting, your little essays are going to hurt tourism. BTW, I didn't know this til we lived in Miami, that people there took their summer vacations in the Carolinas to get out of the Miami heat.
Football footnote: the day after the humiliation of the Buckeyes by the Gamecocks. The OSU coach was fired. I used the nicknames of the teams because it gets Waiting all excited.) -

Great Tribulation
by Friend ingreat tribulation.
the biblical text of matthew 24:21 speaks of a great tribulation that, unless cut short, no flesh would be saved from.
jehovahs witnesses have often applied that scriptural text as having a major and minor fulfillment; one fulfillment associated with jerusalems destruction in 70 ad and a later fulfillment just prior to the end of this worlds system of things.

Since the average life span has gone up steadily for the past 100 years, I don't think we are living in a great tribulation. We have had our problems, but there have been periods in the last 2000 years that were a lot worse.

The last two resposes talk about a Class, as if there are good and bad organizations implied in Jesus's words. I don't believe that at all. Show it to me in a group of scriptures taken from one place, not a bunch of scriptures strung together from here and there.

I think that all the "If, then" arguements are effective at poking holes in the FDS theory, but I like Venice's simple, but elegant solution better. There ain't no such thing.

RR and TR,
I think you're right. I think we should cut out middlemen and go directly to the source.

RHW,
Did you ever notice that in the Patriarchal Pagan religions they sacrificed virgins, but the temple prostitutes were OK? I can just see this pagan priest at the local bar. A woman turns him down and he reminds of the sacrifice coming up that weekend.
Now, that will give you something to chew on.

RHW,
I'm glad you finally found the truth according to Larc. Could you share the truth according to RHW from your part of the world? You're right about those snooty Southern Belle's, but they let the truth out. AND, most of the south got more snow than we did in Ohio. Hey, Waiting, Nah, Nana, Nah, Nah!
I know Waiting like quotes, and I'm still pulling them out of my head or some other part of my anatomy, since she never did send me a quote book for Christmas. Here's one from Frank Zappa: "I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a prefrontal labotomy."
Well, I must be off.

Venice,
I like your first answer the best. There is no such thing as an FDS.
