I thought the cover art could have been something straight from the Watchtower magazine ! I did read this book a couple years ago and did enjoy it.

I'm Perfect, You're Doomed - a review
by Farkel in"i'm perfect, you're doomed" by kyria abrahams, 2009, touchstone.. if you want a way to get people out of that horrible cult, easily, quickly and expeditiously, then here is how to do that.. i can say with a vote of confidence that anyone who reads this book will never and i mean never become a dub.
dubs who read it (assuming they have at least one or two brain cells left) will run from their religion like flies on shit when you pour bleach on it and blow it up with dynamite.. toss away crisis of conscience, apocalypse delayed, 30 years a watchtower slave and all those other very nice books and read this one.
i read those and all the other ones.

How would YOU explain cognitive disonance to a Jehovahs Witness on your doorstep
by smiddy inseriously , in plain simple language that the most thick headed jw would understand.. and what examples would you use.. smiddy.

So much has changed even since I left. I could probably just let them talk and offer shock over the changes in the last couple years !
Its like when you are watching a little brother grow up. You dont really notice all the sublte changes, getting taller, getting adult teeth. But your grandparents only visit every couple years - and yowsers! - they are shocked to see how much he has changed - and yet you live with him so you never really noticed.

If you're happy and THEY know it all HELL breaks loose!!!!!
by SophieG inhi guys...is it me...i am beginning to wonder: is a happy ex-jw a target?
i have had a few run ins this week on fb with random jws trying to check me for things that have absolutely nothing to do with the org.

SophieG - They have been told that anyone not in the Truth is not really happy. They cannot concieve you being trully happy. I found this true in my own case as well.
As a JW I kept being told how happy I was, but deep down I was miserable, taking anxiety med , married to an abusive JW husband. I thought that maybe that was as good as it gets !
Then I left the JW's, left the ex husband, left the abuse, got off the meds - and now I know what happiness is. I continue to prove my family wrong and did not start having doing heroin and committing crimes.
Best of luck to you ! your best revenge is just to be happy. Its drives them crazy :)

I registered to vote after leaving the witnesses. I find it satisifying, and in a small way "rebellious".

Was Your Leaving The Witnesses A Very Gradual Process Or A Quick One?
by minimus infor me, it took many years.. even when i would read all the changes over the years from the "truth", i still would ignore it and "wait on jehovah" and try to be a positive force in the congregation.. eventually, i just couldn't take it anymore and resigned as an elder, and slowly but surely made my fade.. what about you?
were you out, in a short or longer time?
?.

Gradual. My first thoughts was that I was being told all of gods people are the happiest people on earth. So why I am I so miserable ? Whats wrong with me?
Then it became the goal of " how do I make myself happy." I made myself happy when I was not at meetings or feeling pressure to do something as un natural as field service (painfully shy).
When the elders gathered me into a meeting to tell me I needed to stay with my )(ex)husband even though he was physcially and mentally abusive, dealt drugs out of our garage, and smoked weed: because that was gods will (no scriptual grounds) - I drew the line.
I never went to another meeting after that day. Process of about 6 years.

Please Share one of your Favourite Quotations
by cofty inhave you ever come across words that resonate with you?
it doesn't have to be a great gem of wisdom, just something that is meaningful to you.. please share, and if you want to, tell us why it's meaningful to you.. here is something that made me nod when i first read it.... .
"fortunate are those who have learned to see, in the wild things of nature, something to be loved, something to be wondered at, something to be reverenced, for they have found the key to a never-failing source of recreation and refreshment".

Shunning for inactive ones?
by frogonmytoe ini visited my sister in a small town in the midst of the country, the town has a population of 3,000 and there's about 70 in the cong.
anyway, there was a local needs talk a few months ago about associating with family members who didn't live under your roof and no longer went to meetings.
one family of an elder dad and three sons (one an elder too, the others have stopped going) and a daughter (still going but married a 'worldly') are quite prominent and one half of a typical congregational feud.

This might explain to me why my MS brother, wife and new niece keep breaking dinner engagements with me. They always act so interested in hanging out and then flake 30 minutes before they are due to arrive at my house. I even thought about asking him if I was disfellowshipped and I did not know it.
Or perhaps I am a huge bore over dinner ? :)

My brother did not come to my wedding cause it was out of town and he would have missed the Sunday meeting. His "relationship with God was more important".
Its very frustrating. I am sorry.

I was baptized at 17 at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. I thought I was getting "older" and needed to commit. I have no recollection of the date only that it was summer time. I wore a super cute bathing suit with a huge white t shirt borrowed from my dad so that I would be "modest".
