I think Nelsonian Knowledge is my favorite word of the day. Thanks NeverKnew! The only people that are proud that they are not eating BDay cake are the Witnesses. No one else even notices. Except the poor JW kid who's mouth is watering at 2:00 p.m. during the bday party at school. She is so hungry from a long day at school and her mom has not picked her up yet. So the teacher gives her a cupcake and take the little candle off it and says " now its not a bday cake" and the little girl INHALES the cupcake. Wow that for personal fast :)

The worst thing to have pride in
by Rattigan350 ini really hate it when kids on interviews on meetings or assemblies and they state with pride that they turned down the piece of cake or brownie or other birthday treat at school.
is that something to really be proud of?
it is not as if the teacher is tempting them.

Do Witnesses Have Any Aspirations Anymore?
by minimus inwhen i was a kid, my family wanted me to reach out for any type of "privilege", whether it be cleaning the rest room or being an attendant.
obviously, reaching out to be a ministerial servant and elder were high on the list.. since college was a no no, we were to aspire to be something within the congregation.. i wonder if anyone aspires to be anything in the organization, at this point in time..

I am not sure with others, but in my hall, the reason you got baptized so young was because it was considered a "first step" to being accepted in the congregation. Also, you were not allowed to date or marry if you were not baptized (unspoken rule). I was 17, and I delayed more than most in my hall.

JW's planning for retirement
by FirstLastName ini had an interesting discussion with a jw family member recently and he brought up his plans for retirement.
according to his age bracket, this will not be for another 20 years or so.
he plans to buy land, build a house, move the parents nearby.

Thank you all for your thoughts. I agree with all of you, that although they push the idea of Armageddon looming, that they also planning for the future without it arriving. It should be noted that this family member I mentioned just had a baby, so perhaps their thoughts are with more important issues like taking care of family, hense the planning for the future.

It is, ofcourse, very smart to plan ahead for retirement, and then it hit me how weird it was that he was thinking that far ahead, with Armageddon looming. When I was in, there was no need to even have a career, cause you would never have use for it - Armageddon was just around the corner!
It struck me, how much the message must have changed in the 10 years that I have been inactive? Or, could it just be that he is not taking chances and he see the flaws in the message himself?
I have kept up with some policy changes reading this board the last couple years, but have no experience attending meetings in a long time. Just was an interesting observation.

" War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks nothing is worth war, is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."

What gives you away as a (former) JW?
by perfect1 inthese days my jw past stay safely under wraps from nearly everyone.. i dont dig it up- and i see no need to talk about it with anyone.. sometimes i feel as if my past is a large and terrible secret, and i will be found out eventually.
people can sense i am different.
i never talk about my family.. i guess people chalk it up to being a private person or let me be a mystery.. however, there is one thing that i feel completely reveals me as having been raised a jehovahs witness:.

I too have been cursed with the un-ability to wrap gifts. I do try.
I am also horrible at remembering birthdays. I created a list in Word that has all my friends bdays and their kids on it and I keep it folded in my purse at all times. I will reference it a couple times a month just to make sure I have not missed anyone. Its very tattered now.
I also have the ability to remember scripture and sometimes my friends like to pick my brain about "what does the bible say about such and such topic" and I will, robotic like, recall what the bible says. Its more of a drinking game, so I have fun with it.
