It is for people I know Cofty. As I said before, it really depends on where you live and what you do. It's pretty common for people that are not the target of the oppression to not believe it exists. They don't feel it therefore it's not true. But when someone tells me they are discriminated against because of their non religion, and they give me examples, I tend to believe them. Especially in this climate.

i keep reading on here that jw's don't make friends outside the cult, and this is what i used as an excuse for stepping further away from being baptized.
she tells me it's not true, and they can have what ever friends they want.

Yeah, you can go after Dawkins character that's fine. He doesn't claim to be holy or good. But still, that god sanctioned the extermination of an entire race including babies, but it's close minded to define it as such. It's weeding through the facts. Hitler tried to exterminate an entire race, but he brought unemployment to nearly zero for his chosen race. Perhaps we should focus on only the good aspects and not malign the man so. I think this goes beyond the normal way humans screw up their lives and deep into crimes against humanity.
I remember that story where the Israelites didn't kill the canaanite women and children thinking maybe they could live. That wasn't to be so. They got in a heap of trouble and the women and babies were massacred anyway. It's hard to work past something like that, no matter what good the individual did in other areas.

Actually, Dawkins does a pretty good job of describing that god. Not one thing there is untrue. Now if you believe that a god with those traits is holy and good, then you have no problem with the summary. If it makes you uncomfortable---well think of how uncomfortable all those dead Canaanites (babies too) were when they met the people who worshipped such a god.

Of course some conservatives are atheists. Absolutely. They are also gay. There are social conservatives and economic conservatives and everyone in between. Some liberals are very religious. I never meant to suggest otherwise. I'm just saying that on the conservative front, they have a large enough conservative christian base to dictate policy. Not all Americans hate atheists, and many don't care. But even if a minority has these prejudices, and that minority is in the strong position of dictating policy, then that is the effect that will be felt. Personally I think it would be grand if Republicans could put some distance between themselves and that religious base. I believe much more would get done and many more reasonable compromises could be worked out. Because right now, compromising politically is close to compromising religiously. It's a disturbing trend but it's there. I really wish the reasonable people in both parties would prevail. As the climate stands, such cooperation is far in the future.

My brother became an atheist at age 8. My mother believed in a god, and so no one used him. He was therefore unqualified to be a boyscout.

There is enough evidence to disprove the creation myth--but there are still many questions. So just because science doesn't have all the answers yet doesn't make creation true. It has been disproven and now we continue to grow in knowledge in a quest for answers.
I gotta go now, I'm bidding on a grilled cheese sandwich on ebay. It has an image of the big bang.

Keyser, I really think it depends on where you live and what activities you are involved in. My brother lived in NYC and had no real problems. When he moved back home it started all over again. I think that I tend to believe people when they say they are feeling discriminated against. I know what kind of country I live in and it makes much more sense that we hold non-religious people as suspicious. Yes Atheist's bash Christians and Christians bash Atheists. But a Christian still gets to be president. I am personally very quiet about my atheism so I don't deal with it much.

You have a point Keyser. They haven't experienced the violence, but they do experience other types of oppression. No one has set dogs on them yet, but that doesn't make the problem any less valid. Atheists don't have the same opportunities as religious Americans. Imagine an atheist president. Not in this century.

Keyser you are speaking from your own experience. Talk to many atheists and hear the struggles they have. One person got so angry at my brother he suggested my brother should just eat his children since he didn't believe. There IS a belief that atheists lack morals. Yet they are much more likely to be tolerant because while they are moral they don't feel obliged to judge moral "failings". If a person didn't believe in a god, why would he care if people are homosexual? That is a manufactured hate. Most hate is manufactured and it's manufactured by religion. That's not to say all religious people are hateful--they are not--but if you argue that not believing makes you immoral, I can argue that religion makes you a hater.
