I sure as hell don't believe that anymore. I figured out in my mid teens that it was started in the late 1800s by CT Russell. I thought that was weird, but didn't give it much further thought for many years.
Edit: We had studied the Proclaimers book in my late teens and it flat out stated that Russell started the Golden Age and all that business and I just put 2 & 2 together, even though the JWs would like to ignore that.

I don't think it's terrible about them building a new rec center and all that. I mean, the volunteers (slaves) deserve SOME kind of fun, God knows they aren't getting paid.

last week was my first week in college on my new counselling course.
last year i decided i wanted to join a course which would help me to understand my own sufferings and try to help others to do the same.
we introduced ourselves to our class mates and i made it very clear to them all that i am gay and i was kicked out of the jehovahs witnesses and now im much happier.

Punk, HuffPo is a big deal here stateside. It's well respected. And this is DEFINITELY a good thing that the article was picked up by them. :)
from my observations, i think many (especially older) jw's hold through the stupid doctrinal changes because they can't admit the alternative.. i had wished the jw kingdom hope was true, i needed it to be true.
i'm 5th generation and my parents, grandparents, great grand.....ect needed it to be true.
i have watched many "faithful" relatives hang on and die disappointed.
I think this is my mother's situation. Denial because she can't face reality. When my brother left (with quite a bang, I might add), she was devastated, of course, and just horrified. At one point in their discussions, I'm told that she said something to my brother along the lines of having doubts herself. Quite interesting. BUT, I think whenever she finally catches on to the fact that I'm not attending anymore and I'm done, she'll respond the same way. She'll have those doubts but she will never leave because the alternative scares the shit right out of her. FOR HER, she needs to believe that she'll see Armageddon, make it into paradise, and live forever in perfect harmony making friends with lions and riding an elephant around. :P
i currently have an elder body who, for the most part, seems utterly complacent and disinterested in actually "shepherding" anything.
i can't tell if they are lazy or just oblivious to their responsiblities of being "teachers".
it seems like they are the last to know anything and always procrastinate on everything.
Elders not caring and taking sides in a situation is one of the catalysts for why we left.
My father-in-law is an elder, has been for much of my husband's life, and I think he's one of those who truly cares about the cong. Although, like someone else, because of dealing with the congregational issues, my husband didn't really have a father. They didn't do family study, either.
i believe that the governing body knew very well what would be the consequences of publishing the above article on apostates.
they carefully word every article, not only for the faithful, but for the unfaithful, and for those who have never believed our faith.
the above article and the comments here show me their great wisdom, because they have achieved exactly what they wanted.
And we "mentally diseased" played right into it... Maybe. I'm still thinking on whether we did or not.
They knew exactly what they were saying, exactly the response they'd get. Hmm. I can't quite articulate it.

i hated jws that were pushy.
some tried to impose their "bible trained consciences" on everyone.
or the pushy ones would go from house to house and argue with the householder!
