adoption by jehovah's witnesses is blocked .

a couple originally approved by a council as adoptive parents have been refused permission by social workers to adopt a child, because they are jehovah's witnesses.

We were foster parents for about 3 years or so. There are a lot of Amish in our county and a few are foster parents. I wondered why the Amish would get involved in being foster parents since they avoid most all modern "English" ways. (Anyone who isn't Amish is "English") I found out in a short time that they enter the system in order to bring "new blood" into the Amish community. There is a large amount of inbreeding with cousins and the like because of the smallness of the community and other Amish at distant communities are hard to come by. So they are adopting children to fill the void. I have questioned this because of raising these kids in such an extreme culture from the "norm" around them. I know I wouldn't want my child being adopted by them. At least with a JW family the kid has a better chance to being normal than if adopted by the Amish trying to live in the old world inside the modern world. Although, I wouldn't given the choice, have JW's raise my kid either.

Gift ideas???

i'm probably going to a grad party for a jw kid.

dad is an elder, mom a pioneer.

i'd like to think of some gift that would actually help the guy, and still not clue in his parents that i work for satan.

I like cash, kids like cash. My youngest daughter graduated last year and she ended up with $440 dollars and some nice gifts too. But with cash they can do what they want to, or need to, with it. Dear Abby said last year that $10 dollars is appropriate for a HS gradusation gift. I usually give about $25. If it is a niece or nephew I give more, according to my budget at the time. I figure even if you give a cheap gift, by the time you use gas money, your time, buy a card and gift wrapping and a ribbon and bow, you have spent about $25 bucks!

Answered prayers

looking back over many years of prayers, i cannot pinpoint any time when i felt, unequivocally, that i had received a personal response to my prayers.

can anyone here relate any experiences where you have felt that god answered prayers for you?

I put (Antique) after my name because I changed my name from Antique to Lindy when I came here and I wanted my friends from other places to know it was me. I noticed that there are still some coming here that have not been here before so I still do it. I probably will stop after a while. That is why COMF call me "Auntie" and others Antique.

BTW, I am glad that your cancer surrendered to treatment. Religion does produce possitive thinking if you truly believe. And possitive thinking has been proven to work out for a person in healing the body. So in that way, I quess you could say that prayers are answered. But athiests get the same results just practicing possitive thinking in other ways. It just depends on the game you play.

Marrying "Only in the Lord"

the wt definition of "only in the lord" meaning only dedicated witnesses of jehovah in good standing greatly narrows the field of eligible mates.

this has brought about some unusual unions because of the circumstances, involving people who would ordinarily not meet, let alone marry, if it were not for a shared belief system.. what unusual couplings have you seen in your jw days?

how large was your personal field of possibilities and did it include some unusual options?

Both of my marriages resulted from being a JW. Raised that way the options were very slim. Coming from a family that had it's own issues and the resulting self-esteme issues really put a cramp on my style. My father was not a JW, which made it even worse. Our family were nobodies, so we got to choose from the other nobodies.
If I could have chosen from all the guys that I knew, I definitely would have chosen a man that was not a JW. I had my eye on several here and there. I would have went to college first and then chose someone more compatable. But you can't go back...only forward. At least my girls won't be stuck in the same situation as I had.

Answered prayers

No, I can't say I have had one single prayer answered. This was something that bothered me. It fed into my self-image and sense of self. I figured that God didn't want anything to do with me. I did all I could to get his attention. The sisters around me got their prayers answered, what was wrong with me? They told me to be specific. I did. Got nothing. Ask for things along God's will. I did. Nothing. I figured the few bad things that I did must be the end of God's love for me. When I had my crisis of conscience with my religion, I prayed and prayed for a sign that I was wrong in what I felt and what I had found out about the Society. After I finally figured it out, I then realized God did answer me. He didn't want me associating with the WTBTS because he was no longer with them. More research led me to believe as I do now, that God is not there listening and more than likely never was and no ones prayers are answered. But believing so can make the right things happen. You can make them happen though because you believe they will. You do all the right things and things work out. If not, it was not in your power to begin with and you say it was not God's will for you. You blame youself.
It goes along the thinking that God is with both teams playing against each other and on both sides of the wars that are killing people everyday. He can't possibly be with all these idiots!! Yet they keep playing and waring and when they win it was with God's blessing so it makes all competion and the killing okay. If you don't win then it was because you lost God's blessing or he has other plans for you, or you need to work on something such as humility.
It is the same with people dying and when destruction hits with hurricanes and tornadoes. If you live it is God's will and you bless him and prayers were answered. If not, then it is Satan's doing. If the local KH survives it is with God's protection. "God doesn't give you more than you can bear", is another good one for when bad happens and prayers aren't answered. It is a no win, because people will find a way to be blessed or persecuted for God's sake no matter which way anything goes.

This hit a little too close to home

the following appeared in the newspaper this morning:.

a 17-year-old highlands school student was in jail thursday on charges that he had developed a hit list, naming several fellow students he supposedly planned to kill.

highlands police say they arrested andrew douglas quintero, a junior, without incident on wednesday and charged him with 10 misdemeanor counts of communicating threats.. in an interview thursday, highlands school principal jack brooks indicated he wasn't sure whether the student intended to carry out the threats, but said he wasn't taking any chances.. "whether this was done out of humor or it was an expression of anger, i had no idea," brooks said.

I know what you mean. We live in a very small community where everyone seems to know everyone. A couple of summers ago everyone was at the community park for a yearly gathering the town does. Someone tried to take a small girl from the restroom. They tried to tie her up and get her out without getting caught but someone came in and they left quickly. As far as I know they were never caught. Unheard of in this town, had everyone really upset. There just is no safe places anymore. Sad, but if you are aware less can happen.
One of the local HS's here shut down for two days because of threats. And get this, just this past week my husband came home because his company had a bomb threat. No bomb was found but they had to close for a while and about half the people didn't come back that day. My hubby braved it and went back. Who ever heard of these things even 20 years ago? Completely unheard of when I was a kid!

Red Religion and the Lawless Man

ive been sorting through my old jw books and found one published in 1951, what has religion done for mankind?.

skimming through it, a few sections caught my eye.. the societys comments about the dangers of the totalitarian red religion of communism are hilarious, since they easily apply to the society itself.

substitute russell, rutherford, knorr, and franz for marx, engels, lenin, and stalin, and brooklyn for moscow, and voila!.

Dear wasasister,
The problem is, the whole world was into racism at that time. So the WTBTS wasn't different than anyone else at that time. Not that that is okay but they didn't concern themselves with it until the "world" did. Then they sorta tried to correct it as far as it goes. Enough to make themselves look as good as anyone else does. The pictures in the magazines and the few brothers in positions from other races besides white, just like the surrounding peoples. It isn't their main concern, magazine pushing and entrapping you in the Organization is the main focus.
Numbers are dwindling and they can even get around that by saying that that is a sign things are coming to a close on the "system of things". They have an answer for everything.
So their answer to the old literature or any older thinking on things, is always the fact that "the light is getting brighter as the new day dawns." They just don't consider that Jehovah just didn't give the light in the first place. And the candles that the GB used to read by were the same ones that the people of the world read by too and now we have the new search lights in the world and the GB are still reading by candle light. Just "wait on Jehovah and He will take care of everything." "Don't run ahead of Jehovah, ya know."

This stuff is very interesting reading about who Jesus really was, how his line got started and what really happened to him.
I have read Genisis of Grail Kings, The Bloodline of the Holy Grail, Realm of the ring Lords, White Powder Gold-The Elixer of Life? off the list given. Thought provoking to say the least. Some cool pictures too. Shows where fairies and such come from. (Always wondered that.)I have to show the fairies to my daughter.

This stuff is heavy reading so make some time for it. My husband recieved this site from a friend of his who does a lot of religious research. He had put it on Word and we just printed it out. I found that a lot of it makes a lot of sense compared to "modern" christian religion.
