No I don't believe anyone here has been permanently warped by the Borg any more than your parents could do the same to you.
by gubberningbody inyou are who you are so much more due to your own peculiar genetic inheritance, and this is what eventually prevails.. there was a longitudinal study i read a number of years ago that tested the idea that we all have inborn "happiness setpoints".
these people in the study were followed through 20-25 years and periodically examined as regards their self-reported measures of happiness.
the finding was that no matter what happened either positively or negatively in their lives, within 8-12 weeks they were universally back to their baseline.. this means a couple of things:.

The Watchtower and Alcoholics Anonymous
by maputo95 inmany people have stopped drinking through the 12 steps of the programme of recovery of alcoholics anonymous.
can active 'jdubs' join aa to get over their addiction?.
-
lisaBObeesa
The fantasy of the alcholoic trying to 'conquer' the addiction on their own is the basic one that councelors and 12 groups must work to dispel first.
If he can do it on his own, why get help? You see? It's that idea of doing it on their own that keeps them from getting help often times for years and years... Doing it on his own is what got the addict where they are. Doing it on his own and never actually doing it is classic addict behavior and thinking.
Alcholoics and addicts need help. They need guidance, support and advice from people who know how to stay sober.
It's not about being helpless because you have a dissease. It's about being strong and doing what you need to do to take care of yourself because you have a disease.
It's about getting out of denial.

Well, I'm a liberal and I can't stand Family Guy. I work in a high school and you would not believe how much that stupid show confuses kids as to what is appropriate and what is not. Ugh. Stupid show.
I seriously hate it.

Seems like the JW lady was mad that the speaker said the kingdom of god is in our hearts, not in a building/kingdom hall ? maybe?

jdhf, thanks for the post about the science behind global warming. Very interesting.
I can understand people doubting if global warming is man-made or partially man-made. I can get my head around that.
I don't understand people doubting if global warming is real. And I really, really don't understand people who are 100% SURE that global warming is not real, or 100% SURE that man is not contributing to it. It blows my mind. Do they think Stephen Hawking is a dumbass? A liar? A fool? Doesn't understand good science? Is being paid off by Al Gore? Really?
I thought this article in Forbes was interesting: http://www.forbes.com/2009/12/19/climategate-copenhagen-science-opinions-contributors-s-robert-lichter.html We have to take the scientific information we have and make the best decisions we can for our children and our children's children...
"Scientific debate is open-ended, but at some point decision-makers must decide--and take responsibility for their decisions."

Ok, so I just watched the video and found it very interesting, and a bit upsetting. But...
The video said IndyMac went bust and the FDIC sold IndyMac's troubled assets to OneWest Bank.
Why would anyone buy up a bunch of bad mortgages? Would YOU buy up a bunch of failed mortgages? I suspect a person of business would only buy them up if they figured they could make a profit.
So it seems to me that the government had three options: 1) they could sell the bad mortgages by somehow making the troubled assets into something that someone would BUY (make them profitable) or 2) the government could take over the banks and run them or 3) the government could do nothing at all about these huge bank failures, assuring the complete colapse of our monetary system and probably our country.
All bad options.
But I guess I would take number 1 if I had to choose.
What are the other alternatives? -

The Watchtower hates the word, "You"
by moshe indozy brought up a good point a few months back about how the wt uses third party terminology to obscure their real motives.
i thought it was a good idea to revisit this wt writing technique.. (http://www.jehovahs-witness.net/jw/friends/184897).
look at the nov 15th 2009 wt, "treasure your place in the congregation" and compare what happens when we replace the third party terminology (words in bold type) with first party words.

Moshe, your op where you translated the JW text reminded me of a post I made a long time ago....I tried to 'translate' a JW text by replacing all the code words with what they really mean. Boy there are a lot of code words! And I did change the 'we' to 'you' but I didn't even realize that I had done it...
It's the third post on this thread:
