Is Having Kids Worth It?

ok, i'm a single female in her early 30s looking for someone to settle down with.

i'd like to have kids, but the trouble with dating guys who are over 30 is that by now most have a kid and/or have decided they don't want any/more.

so i am getting faced with the dilemma of maybe finding that someone special, but he may not want to have kids.

Wow, I am really surprised how many people have so much neg feelings about having kids. Wow.

I feel like my kids are gifts from God. Every time they grow and change, it is another layer of the gift, a new surprise. (Sometimes, of course, it is a difficult learning experience!) I do not know what they will be like when they are all grown, and I try not to guess.

The number one thing to know about having kids is to HAVE NO EXPECTATIONS. If you think they are little lumps of clay that you can mold into what you want, you are in for a let-down. They come pre-assembled in many ways! LOL!

Of course it is every parent's job to try our best to guide our little semi-pre-assembled humans along, but in the end, what they do with their lives is up to them.

I hope to God I am not dissapointed in my kids when they grow up. The only way I could see that happening is if they turned out to be con-men or murderers or something.

Should I rule out the chance of having kids, in order to give myself more choices in finding a life partner? Or should I not worry about those who don't have the same goals regarding children, and find someone who is, even though that greatly reduces the chances of finding a decent guy?

My two cents: You said you "would like to have kids." This is not like saying, "I would like to have a sandwich for lunch." For me, the desire to have kids was a part of me, a part of who I am. Do you really want to be with someone that you have to squash such a big part of yourself for?

there were sayings used over and over again to control my behaviour.

the biblical on bad associations spoil useful habits and another on just because everyone else does it doesnt mean you have to do it to, would you jump off a cliff just because other people do what were the sayings that bugged you?

Young people: Your peers are STRANGERS!! Don’t listen to them! They might be cool, but they are a REAL DANGER TO YOU!

People on the Internet are STRANGERS!! Would you invite a stranger into your home?? Most sites on the internet about JWs are APOSTATE PROPAGANDA.

Even many on the ones that say they are run by JWs are in fact apostate propaganda. (!!!)

And the ones that are run by JWs are not following the council in the KM!! Remember? ‘It is not necessary to make websites…blah blah blah’?

STRANGERS are in the news in documentaries. The APOSTATES PROMOTE these documentaries about the JWs.

Now we are not saying not to listen to ANY news. That would be crazy.

Just don’t listen to ANY NEWS REPORTS ABOUT JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES. Because those are promoted by the apostates.

And those other news reporters, the ones who are not apostates and still say bad things about us...they are LYING, and DON’T LIKE JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES.

Remember the WHOLE WORLD is in the power of SATAN.

And please, for the love of God, don’t refute the lies spread in the media PUBLICLY. You can refute them privately, in the door-to-door work. But not PUBLICLY, because that just makes us look worse!

The JW Martyr Complex?

like my mother before me, im a martyr.

i am almost unable to make a choice based on what is best for me.

and of course this has over time made me a depressed, bitter person who, much to my horror, explodes with rage from time to time.

We were taught that the world puts #1 first, and so for us to do that would in effect be self-worship. You'd be part of this world's "me generation".

Oh my gosh! I thought I was back in time at an assembly there for just a second! Flashback!

I didn't believe they were God's One True Religion, but I sure bought into THIS crap. Ah, the "me generation." Forgot about that...

If we give, give, give until we've got no more left -- we're spreading ourselves so thin that we feel worn out, and we're of no help to anyone else.
So really it's not selfish to take care of ourselves first. Then we're really in a better position to help others, and even have a good attitude while doing so!

You said it perfectly. It is such a basic, simple, beautiful idea.

How sad that it is taken away from so many JWs!

Thanks everyone for the responses! It is good to know I am no alone. This board has been of so much help to me in the last few weeks. Thank you all.

oh gosh…thanks. I’m kinda proud of myself, even though I have a long way to go.

But the truth is you're out now, and maybe you need to talk to a professional about how you are feeling. It's not good for you.

Actually, I am talking to a professional and that is what is bringing all this stuff up for me. It is blowing my mind again and again how the JW connection keeps coming back up. After several months of therapy, things are starting to make sence.

It is all related. It is a whole way of looking at life that you learn when you are young at the kingdom hall. It is a way of life that requires suffering in order to be considered ‘good.’

It is way of life that requires, and rewards, the denying of your true self. It requires the stuffing of feelings.

I actually feel guilty when I try to put myself first. I don’t think it is going to be easy to just get rid of this way of thinking. All things I have been working through have not been easy. It has been like going to get a root canal: A bunch of yucky stuff has to be dug out and it hurts a lot and then, after a little while, you feel better.

Now, not only do I have to pull out all of those feelings I hid away and expose them to the light of day, I also have to stop stuffing them from now on, AND I have to start DOING things for me. That last one has got to be the hardest part. I can’t even think of what to do for myself, let alone do it.

But I am ready now.
