why dogma?

i think the title is self-explanatory for the most part, but to clarify: i'm not talking about jw dogma.

i mean, why do so many, even ex-jw, settle on dogma?

why use one "holy book" to define your spirituality?

I have to agree with much of what Sirona, bang and SaintSatan have said.

I'm only going from my own personal perspective, but the road is long, and I believe there are many aids. It's as simple or as complicated as we want to make it. But ultimately "life is good".

I've stated, elsewhere ,that I believe that religion may be used as a stepping stone to God (however you want to catagorise that word). Yet, once He has been found it can become a very slippery and dangerous stone indeed. So many have fallen on the rocks of dogma.

Whilst I might argue till I'm blue in the face, on a topic, I still openly acknowledge that this mortal frame know's nothing. Whatever I hold and believe is as subject to change as the sand on the sea bed.

I can live with that, even if others cannot.

Why do so many people believe that jesus is god?

i still say that, christiaity is f--- up in these last days.. christianity teaches that the messiah is god, when the bible clearly points out that jesus is a prophet sent by god... jesus prayed to god<----that's the biggest proof... so i think if anybody believe that jesus is god, is not only an'-ti-christ(not accepting) but also a liar, foolish, and you knoweth nothing, and you are not close to god or christ, you are closer to that devil which we call satan....

IMHO omniscience and omnipotence kinda cover the bases of the Trinitarian question in my mind, helping to explain the ability for multitudes to pray simultaneously. Would you mind expanding on your comment below? I'm interested in understanding what you mean:

Now if the earth and heavens as we know and understand them along with Abraham et@l (and most folks are aware that it is NOT) were the only things that God has to put up with then some of the scriptures that some folks interpret to mean God and Christ are ONE in a literal sense might make more sense.
People that choose the Trinity, IMO, are not yet able to separate Gods existence from the human experience.

Praying to Jehovah.......

.......certainly never got me anywhere, did not even help my wife to survive cancer, in spite of jesus' admonition to "ask anything in my name.

" there are opinions among some students and researchers of the bible to the effect that the god and father jesus prayed to was not jehovah.

just try to find "jehovah" in the sermon on the mount, even in the nwt.

I sometimes get a better response praying to Christ, since all things are in his hands (Matt.28:18).

Of course I was forbiden to do that as a JW

Jesus surrendered his spirit. Funny, I don't know many men who have that kind of choice over life and death.

Nobody thinks that Jesus is greater than Jehovah.

Some believe that Jesus IS Jehovah.

You won't find the name Jehovah in the New Testament - that is one error in the NWT, because they have taken an interpretive approach to translation.

My comment about Autotheos was in connection to what you felt Origen was stating about this term. It was really just a follow-on from from the previous point in the passage that you had marked up.

As for the Holy Spirit being "breathed" - the Holy Spirit is spirit, not flesh and blood. Why shouldn't terms such as "pour" or "breath", be used? To insist that spirit must conform to laws of physics would contradictory.

As for your chosen passage in Proverbs 9, this is probably the only passage that you could have chosen as an example. What is it really saying, though? Reading it in context, bringing in chapter 8, we see whom it is actually speaking of, and who it is that is speaking...
