by Murray Smith ini've read some random articles of late and have found a recurring factor which could well be answered effectively by many of the posters here.
basically the notion relates to what makes one vulnerable to indoctrination into a high-control religious cult and goes lke this .
while most, if not all humans seek group approval and association to some degree .

You can blame everything on your parents, my Mom was and is a great person in everyway except for the control this organization has over her. I was not raised "normal", but it has helped make me into the man I am, good and bad. I can see no common personality traits in the JW that I know, other than the same one that most relgeous people have. The need to have answers to quesitons that do not have to be asked. They just can't be comfortable that things just are and you do not have to know all the answers.

A bad memory of the Ark?
by Scarlouie ini have a lingering memory of an wt article about the ark being found and measured, this read as fact and not a working theory or a possibility.
i was just a kid when i read it, but it stayed with me until i was a young adult and discovered that it was not true.
does anyone else remember this article, or is this just a confused memory from my cracked youth?.

Unfortuately for me, I was led to believe this was a fact, proof that it was all real. This shaped me spiritually as a young person and took my ability to decide if I had faith, there was no more grey area. It was black and white, the ark had been found and the measuremetns matched the documentation in the Bible. Imagine my confusion when I discovered the history channel, went to college, etc.

What will the excuse be?!?
by brotherdan inso we've all heard the ramblings of obves and larsinger about the coming end of the world this year or next.
i want to know what you think the exuses will be when they do not come.. harold camping is the one proclaiming may 21, 2011 as the time of the rapture and october 21, 2011 as the end of the world.
when no one disappears on may 21st, what do you think his excuse will be?

Very good advice so far. I am for sure the fav uncle; we do fun stuff, but it is hard due to our distance apart. I moved several states away when I left the JW faith. I have purchased several of the books recommended and will continue to educate myself. My family will not let the boys stay wiht me for long periods without one of "adults" around; even though I take them to all of the meetings per their request. I do see a lot of similarities between what they are going through as young boys and how I felt at the same age. I def see some openings here and there that I can softly insert some free thinking.
It amazes me how organized the ex JW's are. This forum is great and I can think of lots of new topics I want to review. Thanks so much for the help.

My nephews are 13 and 18. They are pretty immersed. Both Dads are elders and my sisters are very active.
My family and I no longer discuss religeon at all, I have tried very little at this point out of fear of loosing my family all together. But I recently have felt a need to try and save my nephews and am lost at what to do.
I attend a methodist church periodically and have started reading the old testament on my own, I would describe myself as spiritual on my best day and agnostic on my worst day. I feel better when I go to church, so I go to church sometimes. I defnitely do not believe everything I hear there, but get much more out of it than a KH.

I was a JW until age 20. Now, 20 years later I am just now researching these beliefs as an adult with an open mind and not through the belief system crammed down my throat as a child. I have pushed this down for years and as the memories of how I was raised come back, my biggest concern is how can I possible free my nephews from the strong grasp the JW's have on them. At the same time, I do not want to alienate myself from my Mom and Sisters. Our relationship is already very precarious.
This is my first ever post on any website. Any suggestions would be great.
