- Richard Feynman used to go up to people all the time and he'd say "You won't believe what happened to me today... you won't believe what happened to me" and people would say "What?" and he'd say "Absolutely nothing". Because we humans believe that everything that happens to us is special and significant. And that — and Carl Sagan wrote beautifully about that in The Demon-Haunted World — that is much of the source of religion. Everything that happens is unusual and I expect that the likelihood that Richard and I ever would've met. If you think about all the variables: the probability that we were in the same place at the same time, ate breakfast the same. Whatever. It's zero. Every event that happens has small probability... but it happens and then when it happens; if it's weird, if you dream one million nights and it's nonsense but one night you dream that your friend is gonna break his leg and the next day he breaks his arm... *sound of revelation* So the real thing that physics tell us about the universe is that it's big, rare event happens all the time — including life — and that doesn't mean it's special.

Why WLCs lottery counter-example for "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence" is flawed
by bohm ini recently began reading strobels "the case for faith" and in chapter two wlc repeat his refutation that "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence".
his argument is as follows: .
this standard would prevent you from believing in all sorts of events that we do rationally embrace.

I haven't read the book, but his explanation about how "something came from nothing" appears to make no sense. Quantum vacuum fluctuations and virtual particles aren't "something from nothing." They are "something from something." That something is a spacetime governed by existing natural laws.
I suggest reading the book ;)
His point is that what was once considered "nothing" actually has something in it, he gives it the proper name "Nothing", and that in fact, it's looking more and more like there is no such thing as absolutely nothing except in a philosophical sense. And, since we can't physically look outside of our spacetime, it's hard to tell what's out there.

Trinity, Immortality of the soul, Hell fire... Homosexuality
by irondork inmost people here who have spent any amount of time studying the bible will agree that the bible allows for more than one interpretation of these topics.
well, the first three topics, anyways.. reading the gay marriage discussions on this board i see a common thread weaving its way through: no acknowledgement whatsoever that there is an equally valid interpretation of the bible that does not condemn homosexuality.. once in a while i will see the word trinity mentioned on this forum and no big deal is made of it (for the most part).
trinitarian and non-trinitarian teachings are accepted as variations of the christian understanding of the bible without any judgment being made regarding the genuineness of that person's christian identity or relationship with god.. mention the word homosexuality, and there is a huge difference in attitude.

Irondork - it is clear to see form some of the neanderthals in the world exactly why people are treated so badly for being different.
I love irony, especially the kind where someone calls people Neanderthals for someone being different, effectivly treating people in a nasty way because people get treated in a basty way.
Way to perpetuate the cirlce. Self-awareness is clearly not your forte.
Quite clear why people have to hide their thoughts and feelings from others. Ignorant will always be ignorant
For example, calling people names when being bullied is what you are complaining about.
Pro-tip for the future: you should try to not wallow in and perpetuate the very thing you are complaining about. And recent studies have shown Neaderthals were much smarter that previously thought, so, you know, read a book, too.
