Had a Twilight Zone moment last week while in LA on business. The prior night a client/friend and I got together for an evening of guitar playing. Free Fallin' was one of many that we managed to get through pretty well.
The next morning around 6:30AM I was heading in my rental car west on Ventura Blvd in Encino, and there they were - several solitary JW's doing street witnessing - EXCEPT, there was no one else on the entire boulevard, and each solitary one was just standing there in the cold morning air holding up mags, or reading one of the new paper backs.
I was tempted to roll down the window and ask if they were counting time or making time count (remember that one?), but chickened out last minute. I actually felt very sad and sorry for them. In my 40 plus years of "service" - street witnessing was the least favorite for me. Actually had some very uncomfortable experiences like street people aggressively asking for handouts, wanting to sell me their clothes, others taking the mags and making a big show of tossing them in the nearest receptacle. We sometimes heard positive experiences at assemblies of how affective street witnessing could be - guess I was always "wrong place - wrong time".

the last time i spoke with my mom was the middle of october.
i called her that time.. many of you are familiar with the relationship problems ive had with my parents since i quit going to meetings almost a year ago.
for those of you who arent familiar with the situation, you can do a search by clicking on the paper icon under my name to read up on whats been going on.. anyway things were getting worse and worse and nothing good was coming from our discussions or letters.. since i was the one who called her last, i decided to see how long it would take for my parents to get a hold of me the next time.. my mom even told me in the past that she wanted to limit her association with me.
Hello Ranchette, Mulan and others! We can totally relate to the family experiences described - especially what Mulan wrote:
"she (mother - in our case father and mother in law) is also incapable of admitting mistakes or apologizing"
This has lead to us cutting off all ties to our remaining parents for a number of reasons, mostly mental health!
In speaking with some of the few family who we still have contact with (mostly now ex-JW's - who were 3rd generation JW's) it is amazing how dysfunctional our families really were when compared with "worldly folks". Most of it due to marking, shunning, hypocrisy and labeling certain relatives as "spiritually weak". SAD!!
It seems that the Bible verse about "losing father or mother and gaining a hundredfold elsewhere" (poor attempt at a quote, but you get my drift) has taken on new meaning for a lot of us!

as you can tell, i am another newbie, so i thought i would introduce myself.
i have been quietly reading the posts for some time now and thought it time to join in.. i am a 53 year old grandpa (neither daughter or their husbands are jw) married to jw woman with three kids, ages 15, 16, 17. therein lies the source of my discourgement and subsequent disassociation from the jws.
i outlined my involvement with the jws in my profile, if any are interested.

we were in the liquor store yesterday, and a former jw friend of ours walked in.
he looked right at me, and i could tell he was going to shun me, but looked again, and i smiled at him, and said "hi b_ _ _" he returned a greeting, walked over to my husband, who was looking at some whisky and shook his hand, and they chatted for a bit.. so, we decided that it must be okay to talk to us, as long as we are in a liquor store.

I concur. Used to listen to her show quite often in Seattle in the early 90's - followed by Tom Leykus - what a contrast! Soon after Laura was booted to AM Radio.
Regardless of her less than perfect backround - does anyone think based on her support of children's interest - she should be made aware of when the Silent Lambs Dateline show will be aired? She might be inclined to give it a good plug....just a thought.

As a former very loyal dub that can only speak for himself, I thoroughly believed that Jehovah directs the FDS, and would have given my life to follow what was printed. There are a few individual JW's I would have risked my life for as well, but if I believed that the FDS were just men, writing essays of the week, I would have felt a lot differently. If Roy is right, in my opinion, it shows why there is such a huge "double life" class within the borg now. Why get excited about the WT articles or restrictions placed on personal conduct - they are just the mental ramblings du jour and will no doubt change again soon.
YoYo's topic and the subsequent rebuttal is important - it points out the danger inherent in placing your trust in any religion. Giving up control over your thoughts and your body to a select group of men.
Sooooooooooo glad the real light finally went on for my wife and I. Thanks to so many on this board who have presented vital information that has made the move away from WTBS appeal to IMHO logical way of thinking.

i know ya'll will probably get sick of seeing my name but i hope you understand why i am here so much.. anyway, one really ironic thing i was thinking about is that its amazing how much hate i had/have inside of me my whole life.

i have always been angry and hated people.
Flower - great topic. Like Andi, Mulan and others have posted, we have been going through some similar experiences - reconnecting with friends, family and even "spiritual mentors" who left the borg years ago. Most we avoided or lost contact with to comply with "the rules".
I first of all asked them to forgive me, told them how much I missed them etc., and I have yet to be disappointed in the outpouring of unconditional love. One of my happiest reunions has been with the person who was the best man at my wedding. Our friendship took off again, and the 20 years of separation disappeared immediately.
I encourage you to give it your best shot, and wish you the best as you renew those former relationships. Let us know how things work out.
