A few weeks ago, I was asking my mom what is wrong with Easter. So, she copied a bunch of stuff from her CD-ROM into email for me...Then, when we were there last weekend, she gave me her 2001 copy. She found out I had lost my bible...so she gave me her old one. She won't give me my old English/Greek one though.
I guess since she couldn't mark down a CD-ROM on her timeslip, at least she'll get to write down a book for the bible!

For the women: Clothes shopping right before the memorial
by catchthis ini have noticed now and in the past that most, if not all sisters, go clothes shopping right before the memorial.
they make it out to be this huge deal.
almost to the point where if they do not get that new dress from nordstroms, they won't be able to be seen at the memorial.

I always got a new frilly dress when I was little...It kinda reminded me of Easter.
Do you know how hard it was in some years to even find a dress when they weren't in style? And then, it had to be modest, not flashy, etc. Sometimes it took 3 days of shopping just to find something acceptable! -

Birthdays are a good memory
by Big Tex inyesterday was my son turned 9 years old.
he's going to have his birthday party this saturday but we took him out last night for his birthday dinner (he chose red lobster).
he had been dying to see what we had bought him for his birthday and begged (with those big puss n boots eyes) to open "just one" present yesterday morning.

Aww! I am glad you got to share that with him!
My oldest son is 10, and he told me his favorite birthday was when I made cupcakes for his class and they all the number 6 on them in frosting. I brought them to school, and he was slightly embarrassed by all the attention, but he loved it! -

How do you women feel about acting stupid to please men and the borg?
by Dragonlady76 inthe quote below was part of a talk in the 90's.
i heard this as a child and thought to myself, how can any woman accept such a draconian veiw?
i was not sure if i had understood correctly so, i brought it up to my bible study conductor maggie, i was appalled that she agreed with this veiw, we debated it back and forth, until i got the upper hand, then she told me that i was to "rebellious and strong willed", and that i "should never get married", that i way i would not have to submit to male "headshit" "headship".

That view of women is just disgusting.
I grew up watching my mom give into every whim my dad had and never questioning anything. It felt wrong, and I would be no part of it. She still asks his permission to do almost anything, and she even went so far as to say she didn't think my dad would let her drive that far by herself (3 hours) to come visit me at my new house. In the end, he decided to come too, and I don't think he would have had any trouble with her coming by herself. I really think she hides behind the "I'd have to talk to your dad" excuse, and I've pushed her on it a few times. I'll call my dad when she is at the KH, and he will tell me that he is fine with whatever, and say my mom never brought it up!
Gee, if I never used my brain around this house, the bills would never be paid! My husband just doesn't remember due dates and such, so I take care of all of that. I don't mind at all since my background is accounting. We discuss any major decision, and usually I get my way. lol -

There was a huge debate here about teaching Intelligent Design along with Darwin's theories. As a result, they have to read this statement to all 9th grade biology classes:
THE STATEMENT
Dover Area School District administrators read the following statement to ninth-grade students Tuesday as part of the biology curriculum, and are scheduled to read it again today:
"The Pennsylvania Academic Standards require students to learn about Darwin's Theory of Evolution and eventually to take a standardized test of which evolution is a part.
"Because Darwin's Theory is a theory, it continues to be tested as new evidence is discovered. The Theory is not a fact. Gaps in the Theory exist for which there is no evidence. A theory is defined as a well-tested explanation that unifies a broad range of observations.
"Intelligent Design is an explanation of the origin of life that differs from Darwin's view. The reference book, Of Pandas and People, is available for students who might be interested in gaining an understanding of what Intelligent Design actually involves.
"With respect to any theory, students are encouraged to keep an open mind. The school leaves the discussion of the Origins of Life to individual students and their families. As a Standards-driven district, class instruction focuses upon preparing students to achieve proficiency on Standards-based assessments."

I loved to get a birthday card from someone when I was growing up, because it meant someone remembered me and my birthday! Someone that worked with my dad would send me cards for Easter and Christmas too, and I loved getting them. It also meant that I got mail, which I usually never got anything.
A few years ago, I sent everyone in my family (even the JW's) Christmas cards! LOL I had gotten professional pictures taken of my boys, and since we lived so far away and I already had bought the Christmas cards, I wasn't about to go out and buy regular cards just in order to send the pictures so they wouldn't get bent. No one ever said anything about it either. They all knew by that time that my family celebrated Christmas.
There is no harm in sending the card and seeing what happens. If the person gets offended, you could just apologize and say you just wanted to let them know you were thinking of them. -

From door to door, to door, to door.......
by Gill inwhat's the point i ask you?
here in the uk, it's an unavoidable fact that the majority of people are out at work, shopping etc.
if you really wanted to speak to people, and felt an urgent duty because the 'end is near' why aren't the jws in the shopping centres, streets, and generally where the people are?.

I remember barely ever finding anyone at home. They had built these nice new houses, fairly expensive ones, and someone had it as a territory. No one was home on a whole street, and the others were making comments that "Both parents are working just to be able to afford them." And? That's how life is nowadays. These were beautiful houses, and if the people wanted to work to be able to live there, that was their business.
My mom was talking about the last few houses she has in a territory where she can never find anyone home. I told her about how when I worked with the Census in 2000, I had it well organized to find everyone home. Some of my people would work in the mornings and some at night. I had older people, college students, professionals, men and women on my crew. Then, to get the last couple hundred houses, I switched who went where around and tried to get them at different times. We ended up getting everyone within a few weeks.
I remember joking with them to dress neatly, but not to dress up...because I didn't want anyone to think they were JW's and not open the door! lol -

Early 90's... My mom actually let me try out for soccer, and I made it. Considering I had never been able to play any organized sports, I was proud of myself. Then, she said I couldn't join the team. A few coaches/teachers called the house and told her how it would make me well-rounded and look good on college applications, etc. My dad was for it, but he said my mom would have to pick me up after the practices. She said she couldn't be bothered with it, it would make us late for meetings, and she refused.
I think it was cruel she even let me try out if she had no intention of letting me play.
My older boys both play soccer, and one also plays basketball. Sports are wonderful for kids because they learn teamwork. Also, not everyone is great at academics, and it gives them something to feel good about themselves. -

Gas prices & JW Conventions/Field Service
by doinmypart inwith gas prices forecasted to reach $2.50 in the u.s. do you think this will impact the district conventions this summer?i hope that either fewer will travel to the conventions, and those that do attend will donate less money to the wts.. and what about field service?
i realize hard-core jws will continue in the "ministry", but in my area we have a lot of driving territory.
not many are willing to drive, they prefer to stay close to the kh and work shorter periods rather than spend a lot of money filling up their gas tanks.. in other countries where gas prices are higher than u.s. prices perhaps people are used to it, but do you think it has a bearing on jw activity?

LOL I should bring that up with my mom.
She is self-employed, and she has stopped taking assignments in certain areas because she says the pay isn't worth the gas money. However, she can be found in the same areas doing field service. (She lives in a rural area) Usually, she drives back and forth to the DC, but she said her and my aunt are staying at a hotel this year.
Is the DC a 3-day or 4-day event this year?
