Ut-oh!
My parents...they told me they were married in March, 1976...then, I figured out that since I was born in June, 1976, my mom was pregnant when they got married. She wouldn't give me a straight answer about it.
When I was a teenager, I found their marriage certificate...they were actually married in March, 1977, when I was 9 months old. To me, it wasn't a big deal, but I didn't see the point of lying about it. Years later, she told me the truth about it.

Children of the 80's!
by MelbaToast inalright, i admit, i was a child of the 80s (or what i can remember) but the real reason for this thread is i have noticed that there is quite a few of people on this site that are close to me in age or just a little bit younger or older.
i will be 28 in june.
i think that this period in my life is a deep questioning period, because at younger ages i didnt give a flip about anything jw or ex-jw for that matter.

I'll be 29 next month.
I loved the Care Bears and Pound Puppies. I have some garbage pail kids cards still too, and those plastic charm bracelets everyone wore in like 4th grade. -

So I'm at the meeting tonight.............
by JV ini'm looking through the new awake magazine (great article on shoplifiting by the way) and this older sister comes and sits beside me.
she started talking to me about this great little piece in the magazine about fish or something that should be on my dinner plate, something that i don't really care about, then she turns to me and said and i quote " where else but jehovah's organization can we learn such things?
i sat there with a dumbfounded look on my face thinking " are you kidding me?

LOL I am always amazed at what fascinates the dubs!
I wonder if my mom will start cooking more fish for dinner. It's been on the news for a few years that the omega oils in it are good for you and I think it holds off cancer, too. I guess they are too busy getting ready for the meetings to watch the evening news, though. -

What would be on your 1.00 per day menu, and could you do it?
by SixofNine in.
imagine that you're givin the opportunity to win a substantial prize (say, 5000 dollars and a make-out session with angelina jolie or sam shepherd) if you can a) live for 60 days on one dollar per day, and b) retain your health better than other contestants.. ah, screw that, that's silly.
what would be your menu if you had to live on one dollar per day, and you could not accept free food?

If you could get the $60 up front, I think it would be easier to do than the $1 per day. Buying in bulk is less expensive, and you could have more variety. The hard part would be making sure you didn't run out of food before the end, though. The less you eat, the more you will sleep, and you wouldn't feel hungry when you were asleep, unless you are starving. Then, I'd imagine you'd be too uncomfortable to sleep much.
I know some toddlers are picky eaters, and doctors say that even though they may only eat protein once or twice a week, it all averages out in the end. I'd go about it that way...vitamins one day, protein the next, carbs the next, etc.
But, I don't think I'd take a challenge like that. I watch sales and use coupons, and spend about 50-70% of what similar sized families do at the store. We eat fairly healthy food and a balanced diet, and healthy food generally costs more than the ready-to-eat cheaper stuff. But, making the lists and getting the food takes me longer than it would if I just went and bought what I want at the price it is at the closest store.
Oh, and Ramen noodles have too much salt to eat for any length of time. You'd have to drink tons of water to balance that out. I could go a whole day eating just sunflower seeds though. lol -

Now Elders Are Making Elderly & Infirm Feel Guilty For "Being Hooked Up"!
by minimus inmy mom as well as a few others are "hooked up by phone" to the meetings.
lately, the elders are saying in their talks that if a brother or sister could be at the meetings but instead are "hooked up", then they are hurting jehovah by not having regular association with the "friends" at the kingdom hall.

Ugh..reminds me of one night when I still lived in the same city as my parents...They were calling for snow showers, nothing major. My dad (non-JW) told my mom she couldn't drive to the meeting that night because of the weather.
My mom was so concerned about the elderly sister that she picked up having to miss a meeting. She called me to pick them up, and I did as I had to go out anyway. She couldn't find another witness to do it, but judging by the cars in the lot, most of the congregation made it that night. My dad has a tendency to overreact, but still.
Where is the love? My mom was always doing things for others at the hall, but no one could return the favor? At her new hall, she picks up her sister who doesn't drive and a couple of others that are elderly for every meeting. My aunt rarely made it to the meetings before my mom moved up there. -

My mom and her Ministry School talks
by Mamacat ini get so frustrated with my mom sometimes.
even when i was a kid, she'd get me to help her with her talks.
my mom is intelligent, but she has a hard time getting her thoughts organized and on paper, so she always asked for my help.

Oh, Blondie, sometimes she spends more time explaining to me what the talk is even about because I don't remember the subject manner at all. I ask her tons of questions to determine what she is even talking about...and I think it helps get her mind going. She also had to read the scriptures to me because I forgot where I put the bible she gave me.
It seems she just rewrites what the reasoning book says anyway because last night she read to me from the reasoning book, and it was almost exactly the same as her talk...just she expanded on it a little, read the complete scriptures, and added an illustration. I never did my talks like that because I liked to use my own words to make it sound like something I would actually say.
There are a few other family members in her congregation, and I am sure she has some sisters she is friendly with there by now. She's been there 2 years, and she auxillary pioneers sometimes, so she should know some people to help. I don't think it is a very large congregation (maybe 60 people or so) Of course, she butters me up with the "You have always been so smart" conversation...maybe she is just embarrassed to ask someone else. Next time, I think I'll suggest that she talk about it with someone at her hall, and see what she says. -

Thanks for the ideas/feedback everyone.
I do help with my mom with tons of other things. I help her with computer programs, and I help her write an email or letter when it needs to be formal, and researching products, etc. She always asks me for my help, and I usually don't mind helping her..I just can't seem to ever tell her no. I'd say she has a talk about every 4 months. It really isn't a lot of time...I think I was just frustrated because this week has been busy and hectic for me, and I thought she'd get the hint. She is retired, and I know she has more time than I do...I have 3 kids and one on the way, and she just has my dad to look after.
I was never baptized, and my mom has never shunned me or anything like that. I am an only child, and I don't speak out against the JW's to her. I respect that she has a faith, and it seems she respects that I don't. She used to try to preach to me, and I told her to lighten it up. If I have a question, and I want to know what she thinks, or what the bible says, I will ask her. We have a pretty good relationship, I think.
I remember once when I was a teenager, she had a busy week at work and a talk to do. She wanted me to write an outline for her, and I told her I couldn't do it because that would be the same as writing the whole thing for her. She was a bit upset with me about it too. Now, she writes it, and I just rearrange things to make more sense.
Oh, and as far as a date about Christ's return, there was nothing like that mentioned. It was a little funny because she was talking about how Christ's second return would not be in the flesh, like some other religions believe. I asked her if other religions really believe Jesus is going to come back to earth and walk among us, and which religions those were. Then, I guess she started thinking about it, and she said "I don't know what other religions believe about it." -

Even now, she asks me to read over them and help her make her words clearer. I haven't stepped foot in a KH in almost 10 years! She has a talk tomorrow about Jesus' return and how it is spiritual instead of literal.
She emailed what she had written to me Monday, and it's been a busy week for me. My husband went on a business trip this week, and I planned things to do each day to keep me and my youngest son occupied. Plus, I don't usually have a car to use during the day because we only have one right now, so we've been on the go.
I totally forgot about looking over the talk, which I never said I would do...she just assumed I would since I always do. She left me several phone and email messages about it today, knowing damn well we were at a birthday party for a friends' son.
So, what did I do? I couldn't help it...I felt guilty. I called her and spent over an hour on the phone with her going over it and cleaning it up for her. I really don't want to do this for her anymore! I just can't seem to tell her no. She knew I was busy all week, and I thought she'd get the hint.
I just wondered if anyone else gets roped into doing things like this. I love to write, and I always liked the school, but enough is enough! I am afraid if I told her no directly, it would hurt her feelings. I love my mom...I just don't like her religion.
