Belief in evolution isn't a sufficient reason to be taken seriously but it is a necessary condition.

I am disappointed that he felt the need to give legitimacy to such a hierarchical and primitive organization. He was a philosophical ass-kissing apologist. Philosophy is a tricky business. It either spends too much time on epistimology or it falls into history on the one hand or science on the other. Although, Adler is brilliant he tends to be more oriented to history than science. Religion is for people who are in love with the past. Adler's gravitating toward history robbed Philosophy of it's "Wonder". Philosophy is at its best when it sorts out scientific endeavors and leads to an understanding of the actual world. Adler was satisfied with a possible God of the imagination rather than an actual God for which there is no evidence.
When I said I liked Adler I meant to say I liked his life. But, he was often a blow hard.

I liked Adler but was disappointed in his reasoning on God. He even went so far as to get a Christian baptism very late in life.

Unions were necessary but they should have taken stock options instead of wage increases. That way they would have the opportunity to share risk.
If unions would have gotten stock options they would have been thrilled that American companies would go overseas for cheaper labor.
There is an economic model where everyone is given a loan of say $250,000 invested in a super-stock made up of a combination of the 100 best performing stocks. This would be endowed at birth. The government would be paid back in dividends. When the loan has been paid back the person would receive ownership of the funds and could then roll them over or draw on the funds. This would be a way for everyone to have a stake in the capitalistic system.

Myers-Briggs is based on dichotomous (split/either-or) dimensions. But nature loves the average as is borne out by the bell curve.
MBTI insists you are either Introverted or extroverted, Sensation or Intuition, Feeling or thinking, Perceptive or Judging. The reality is that most people fall very close to the middle in at least one of those dimension. Some are in the middle in three. This means that it is very easy to flip over to another temperament description. When there is a tug-o-war going on between E/I, T/F, S/N, J/P the environment plays a very significant role in which dominates.
Psychotherapy, is based on the idea that everyone makes poor adaptations. People surrender their natural selves to external pressures. They take on a personality that is quite different from their normal constitution. That's what therapy is supposed to do - help you recover your true self. But there is no direct way to do that. It takes a lot of talk, frustration, and sorting out.
The trouble with the written tests like DISC, MBTI, Enneagram etc. is you have no ground zero. The adapted self takes the test and is often quite different from one's natural self. But at least half the people who take these tests are fairly well adapted and there is a strong congruency between their natural self and test results. This is sufficient to create enthusiasm for these tests. But for the other half it just creates confusion.
It's like astrology. The twelve signs are generally accurate clusters of traits that go together. However, there is no connection whatever between birth date and a person's sign description. But, at least a fourth of the people have a lucky hit and become believers and swear by it.

The MBTI is popular but severely flawed. Lot has been written about it.
Big 5 assessments are considered more reliable.
There are major problems with ALL paper and pencil tests. They basically ask you what you think you are and then tell you that you are exactly what you think you are.
Jungians generally don't like MBTI. There is no way of knowing which configuration of your SELF is taking the test.
It is also abused when you try to classify someone else. (Human Resources) You tend to look at others through your own distorted perceptions. What are you typing? The other person's Persona? (Their public charade?)
MBTI is too nice to people. It doesn't address the crazy side which we all have.

by jean-luc picard infirst of all , may i wish you all a happy new year.. in response to obaracs earlier thread, i think it would be amusing to list all the dc themes that we can remember.. it would be interesting to compile them in excel and amusing to see the irony in them over the decades.. so what themes do you recall, and from what year?.

"God" appears 13 times.
"Divine" appears 10 times.
It appears they don't take their God's "personal name" too seriously.

1975 Denial
1975 was the pet project of Fred W. Franz.
I personally had a conversation with Karl Klein (GB) and he lamented all the consequences of the 1975 fiasco.
In fact he said they (big shots & writers) were razzing Freddy right into the summer of 1975 asking him if he still thought something was going to happen.
How did Freddy the Prophet answer them?
"It's not October yet. Just wait. You'll see in October."
No one has to believe this. But I swear to whatever higher power that might exist that I heard this from Karl Kleins own mouth.
Anyone who knows how the Watchtower controls information would have to believe that any so called "rumors" had the backing of the society. They control everything - even the rumors. What's more. I never heard a talk during any assembly local or international where the society tried to squelch the rumors about 1975.
To end the rumors they only had to say something like this: "You know dear brother & sisters it has come to our attention that some of you are saying that 1975 is a marked year - that at the very least it will be the start of the Great Tribulation. Well, we on the Governing Body have never said that. And we want all such talk to stop immediately. After all the Bible never gave us a year or date when the Tribulation would begin. Be careful lest you give us the image of being false prophets. We have heard that some have even sold their houses anticipating that they could live off of that money and pioneer right up to the end. Others are delaying important surgery. Remember we don't serve with a date in view."

Always is a dangerous word. It's even worse than "never". Christianity is a great chance to study a cult in formation. They invented it as they went along. Added stuff. Threw out stuff. Collated stuff. Indexed stuffed. Translated and retranslated stuff. Stole stuff. Absorbed stuff. The only thing that is consitently clear is that it is the work of humans.

Closing down of all non-native congregations in The Netherlands
by Gorbatchov inthis weekend serious sources told me that in the netherlands the society is closing down all non-native congregations.
because of the mixed population of this country, there are >100 non-native congregations like english, france, dutch-caribian, arab, chinese, italian, russian, spanish etc.. my source was backing the dissision of the society because "these non-native congregations are islands on their own, with group-thinking and not allways listening to the society..." and concluded "these non-natives has to learn dutch instead of we are learning their language".. strange: some years ago many jw's learned a foreign language (like arab or chinese!
) and now they are all closing down.

I have heard of squabbles among foreign language groups in the US. Sometimes it is a female who has time to become profiecient in the foreign language (myanamar and mong groups ) and the American brothers don't like having to defer to a sister who is the master of the language. There have been sisters who relish their new found authority and they aren't afraid to take over - conducting field service meetings etc.
I think the distraction of talking to people in their native language is probably going to end. Those who are attracted to these groups are usually very smart people (mostly women) who are bored to death with the conventional gab of the snake pit on wheels zig zagging around town calling on old people who will take literature just to interact with another live person. They get to actually feel like missionaries and can boast about how many rice JW's they study with. They don't realize that these people just want to assimilate and are willing to act interested to get some english language experience. The down side is that these people who are bored also like having a following - an entourage of admirers that they can parade around with at assemblies.
