what if the witnesses did not have a policy of disfellowshipping those that are apostates.
what would the congregations be like?
Skimmer, I hate to be argumentative, but d'fing has really only taken off in the last 20 yrs. Before that it was largely a lame duck! It was always there, but no where near as popular as it is now. What is the glue that held the Tower together before shunning became all the go?

Good comment Brucie! I like it when you share of your wisdom, without dressing it up so as I can't understand it. :-) Witnesses just don't get it that their religion is very tenuious. Something like a strict diet - if you break the pattern a couple of times, it easier to do repeatedly until eventually you're stuffing pies and cakes down your throat as fast as you can stop by at the bakery. Sorry, what were we talking about? Oh yeah - strict rules = strict adherence = desired results.

In the real world we have an effective system of sorting out who we want to associate with and who we prefer to ignore. It's not cruel or unkind, it's just a simple social structure that has evolved to help us go thru life associating with like minded people. It's our society's friendship structure. The WTS has interferred with this system, not trusting individuals to gravitate towards those who best suit them. They really had no need to come in weilding their big stick because people naturally steer away from those who don't behave as they do and they are drawn to those who are like themselves.
I might not have been so sure of how wrong the WTS was if it hadn't been for d'fing and shunning. Their treatment of me was proof positive that my leaving them was the right decision.

i should of posted this topic here because i am very interested to learn where those end up after the watchtower.. for those wha have left jehovahs witnesses is there religion after you leave the watch tower?

Dave I will pass on your adorations to The Big DAVE. He is in something of a snit with you though. It was his 50th birthday last Saturday and we put on the big party here in Oz - he flew home specially. We sat around waiting for you to arrive and trying to pretend we could have a good time without you. We did our best, but well the disappointment couldn't be ignored. Where were you man? Just wait until it's your 50th!!! We won't let YOU down!!!
How about it? I totally agree with you - we need another occassion to celebrate (an excuse to get together and wait for Julie and Alan to stop reaching for the stars in your sister's room.............) It's a bit late for us to cath Abe's 19th now - so when is your 50th??? Give us some warning and we'll be there with bells on! David is looking younger than ever btw. It's the pure life he leads!!!!

Danny, the best way to love Alan is to visit him. He is quite a guy. I didn't see the post where he shot his mouth off to you. Have just gone looking but no luck. It's impossible not to be in awe of Alan - his research is truly mind boggling. As you know, my SO has a Phd, and yet Alan's efforts make a Phd look like a walk in the park. Of course we won't go into whether it's really healthy to research the WTS. It could be for some??!!
When we stayed with Alan and Julie, Dave was with us some of the time. Couldn't get rid of him from his lovely sister's beach house where we were hauled up for a while. It is such a pity we don't live closer to to you guys - what a time we'd have. I have absolutely no doubt that you would love Alan in the flesh - I'm sure he's been offensive, but I'm equally sure it's surface stuff.
Wish I could join you in a drink!!! I'm off it. Life is hardly worth living these days! I think I preferred living under the threat of Armegeddon rather than the threat of the passage of time on our frail bodies.
