That is the quandary - we are encouraged to find out about other religions, but only using the society's publications, such as "Mankind's Search For God". The sole purpose of learning about them is simply to be able to witness to people of other faiths effectively. We need to find "Common Ground" in order to soften their spirit - a good example of this is that Witnesses can talk to Muslims about using images in worship.

Why do JWs segregate themselves?
by WinstonWigglesworth ini was wondering today about how jw are not allowed to socialize with wordly people.
how can they judge other religions if they aren't allowed to witness religous practises other than their own?
my friend is a jw, so to better understand her religion i participated in one of her religious gatherings...yet when i invited her to my church she wasn't allowed.

Original artist: John Lennon
Remake artist: Roxy Music
Song: Jealous GuyThis one was unfortunate, as it was meant to be a tribute - I don't think it was Bryan Ferry's intention to better the original, but he did it anyway.
Original artist: Gary Numan / Tubeway Army
Remake artist: Sugarbabes
Song: Are Friends Electric / Freak Like MeThis one isn't really a cover per se, but I love it anyway. The man himself prefers it to the original, so who am I to argue?

JW Kids - More Frightened Than Most?
by Englishman inive recently been in contact with a couple of ex-jws that i knew in my childhood.. what has surfaced is the amount of fear that we experienced as young children when we were involved with the witnesses.
i accept that children often do develop irrational fears as part of growing up, but what i am talking about here is a deep-seated fear of being harmed.. many young children that i grew up with in the witness religion were of an unusually nervous disposition.
i recall how when i was first taken to meetings that i found the whole experience somewhat sinister and strange.

I know of an extrordinary amount of "brothers and sisters" who read the Daily Mail. I think you have hit the nail on the head there E'man. No wonder they all think that the Guardian is an Apostate newspaper!

E'man, this thread has brought up too many familiar and unpleasant memories in me.
My primary foreboding thought while I was a child was that petrifying anticipation of God's anger if I ever fell short. God never seemed very loving and caring to me – he was always judgmental and condemnatory.
I spent so much of my childhood in tears it's just embarrassing to admit. It was drummed into me that I was “different” and “special”, but I just wanted to blend in with the rest of the kids. I was the kid that didn’t celebrate any holidays, that didn’t go to Assembly in the morning, that couldn’t go to any after school clubs.
It’s strange that as a child, how you can accept this as just a fait accompli.
The painful experiences I went through as a child are with me to this day. But how can I be angry with my mum and dad for bringing me up in a way that they sincerely thought was the right way?

The Nephilim - What can I say!
by Matty inim sure nothing surprises the people who regularly post here.
but what really shocks me now is that as a child i genuinely believed some of the most preposterous, stupid and moronic things ever committed to papyrus.. take the nephilim.
well they were mutants.

Angie,
Thank you for that slant on this story – that was most welcome - I would really be interested in other bible translations of this scripture, not really so as I can make any sense of it, but more to fathom out what the bible writer (supposedly Moses) was thinking when he wrote it. Also the reference in Jude begs some investigating too.
I am beginning to honestly think that this very little story, perhaps overlooked, can do a perfect job at rocking a fundamentalist’s faith in the infallibility of the bible – much more so than getting into an argument into whether there was an earthwide flood or not.

BEFORE YOU LEFT......
by In_between_days inanother question.. this one is for all those that began doubting the organisation when they were an obedient jw.. although i am sure you rarely shared it with anyone, what was the one problem you had with a certain jw only doctrine?.
what i mean is, what little gremlins lurked at the back of your mind?
what were the doubts that you kept hidden and what made you finally act on them?.

BEFORE YOU LEFT......
Well, I haven't left yet, but give me time.
The first doubt I had as a child was looking at the bible, particularly the Hebrew Scriptures and how brutal it was. Jehovah was supposed to be a loving God, why does he get his kicks doing so much killing? When the "My Book of Horror Stories" came out, I read it from cover to cover in about a week, and it kinda made me scared of God - he was a bit like a larger, more powerful version of my dad, with an equally bad temper. I just got used to the fact that brutality was acceptable to God. If I was naughty, it was quite right that my dad should beat me, that's God's way. As I got older, my resentment grew. Now I am really pissed off with God, for making my life so miserable while I was growing up.
