Just signed up for my first Christmas party!
by Matty ini've worked for the same company since i left college, for a long time, and so some people where i work have known me for many years.
i am by and large still known as a jehovah's witness who generally refuses social invites.
i have not spoken a great deal to my work colleagues about my change of heart about my religion, just a select few, although people have definitely noticed that i don't preach at them anymore!

Larc, yes, wise words - although I haven't been to a office Christmas do before, I have certainly listened to the after party gossip and I know where you're coming from.
Fair point ISP, it certainly is kinda strange!
Thank you Tera, I guess I'm now getting to that stage where I'm taking a few risks about being found out, but not feeling too bothered about it. I'm glad I feel like this at long long last. It's my life, and it's about time I had a bit of fun for once and stop feeling guilty about it!
Thank you Leanerlou, and welcome too! I also remember not being able to eat any of the cakes and stuff for birthdays and Christmas at primary school for fear of divine retribution! It just seems so nutty now, but I was so serious about it!

I've worked for the same company since I left college, for a long time, and so some people where I work have known me for many years. I am by and large still known as a Jehovah's Witness who generally refuses social invites.
I have not spoken a great deal to my work colleagues about my change of heart about my religion, just a select few, although people have definitely noticed that I don't preach at them anymore! The big problem I have is that there are one or two Witnesses dotted about the office block that would happily grass me up to my congregation if I started to be openly "worldly" and so I don't shout it from the roof-tops as I would wish.
Anyway, this week I have signed up to go to the departmental Christmas party in early December, which will be about 200 or so people in a big hired hall. This would be such a normal, trivial thing for most people to do but here I am, in my thirties, going to a Christmas party for the first time ever!
My question to the board is: Do you remember the first Christmas do you ever went to? How did it go? Were you too nervous to enjoy yourself and strut your funky stuff? Did you have the dinner and chicken out and ran out of the building before the disco started? Or did you get to snog that person you fancy from the office? Or, bearing in mind my circumstances, did you get found out by one of your Witness "friends" and get yourself into trouble?

WHAT IS DEJA VU??
by Mary in.
i think everyone has had an experience with deja vu; i know i have and it's really freaky when it happens.
i'll be standing there talking to someone and that feeling comes over me that i've done this before; i've had the exact same conversation with this person and i can even predict what they're going to say.. with someone i know, that's one thing; having this experience with someone i've never met before is really bizarre.. i've heard all kinds of theorys as to what deja vu is: a "delay" in the brain, reincarnation, someone in the future has changed the past and we sometimes 'repeat' things, it's all in your head, it's satan.......... i'd be interested to hear what sort of experiences you've had with deja vu and what you think it is........ .

What is Deja vu? It's when they say "It doesn't mean that I don't like you Matthew, it's just the fact that the spark just isn't there between us, at least not from my side anyway"

BC/AD or BCE/CE?
by Pleasuredome ini never really understood why the wts used bce/ce.
can anyone tell me why?
and can anyone tell me when they started to use this system?

Pleasuredome
I hope some more scholarly ones out there can give some more detail on the subject of Jesus' birth year. I remember once in an RE lesson my teacher asked the class what year Jesus was born. I threw my hand up smugly and when asked I said "2 BC". My teacher said, "Well, Matthew, it was actually 6 BC, but you were right in that it wasn't year zero!" Hmm!
On your other query, I can say that all the society's publications going up to the Rutherford books in the thirties all have AD and BC, not CE and BCE. The "Common Era" and "Before our Common Era" phrases seem to spring up in publications during the early Knorr period, but I can't pinpoint a specific year.

CE (Common Era) was invented as a secular alternative to AD, likewise BCE instead of BC.
AD (Anno Domini, Latin for "In the year of our lord") is inaccurate because Jesus was not certainly not born in the year zero, neither was there a year zero.
The Watchtower started it simply for the reason of accuracy, like they're so accurate with dates!
