Cruzanheart: I'm very sorry about your Dad. I lost a family member due to similar circumstances but they weren't JW's. But they were hurt by them. The WTS claims that whatever happens to a DF'd person or someone who quits is totally the person's fault. It is NOT. The WTS is directly responsible for any harm to anyone due to their Nazi tactics. From the WT's claim that they "speak for God", or as they teach it "everything we say you must do or you'll die, and if we change our mind, you must do so also, no matter how stupid or silly we act, you must believe us, and so forth", from all of this we get mental illness, deaths, suicides, misery, broken homes, murder, rape and child abuse, drug addiction, and all the rest.
Were not all of the above problems the very things that Jesus tried to help honest-hearted people to avoid in their lives??

To FlyingHighNow: When I was appointed a book study conductor almost 30 years ago, one of the few kind elders we had was discussing helping JW's to get to the meetings. He said he could never understand how most JW's (at least in his experience) would drive miles out of their way to pick up a "Bible study" on a regular basis, yet never pick up a baptized publisher who might have been a JW for years. He said "why spend all that effort and time on a "maybe" or even a "probably not" when there are "definitely JW's for decades" trying to find a ride? I guess it kind of ties in with what you said.

the nearly 10% increase in partakers at the memorial in the 2008 annual service report is a huge increase.
there were increases in the previous years too.. this massive increase is no doubt attributeable to the 'new light' this year that the calling of the 'heavenly class' was not closed in 1935, as previously taught.
the new understanding this year is that the calling of the 'anointed' class is 'evidently' still open.
Years ago, it became evident that the JW's alive today who said they were anointed, plus the "anointed" that the WT insists existed for the past 2,000 years, totalled way more than 144k. They then started to say that just because 300,000 first century Christians claimed to be anointed doesn't mean they were. This was their feeble attempt to keep the numbers down. They couldn't ignore the numbers in this time period, so they said that the numbers from the past were not accurate.
Aside from the colossal arrogance of the WTS judging people whom the apostles possibly "laid their hands on" or were in good standing then, they are faced with a mathematical contradiction. The first century plus the hundreds or thousands that must have existed throughout the Dark Ages, added to today's figures, totals (according to some historians and I don't recall where I saw it) into the millions. The WTS has painted themselves into a corner that NO ONE can get out of.
I just wish that those weasels would just admit they don't know a god damn thing about any god or the Bible. They already do enough damage in the world without lying in this area. I wouldn't be surprised if some day it became a disfellowshipping offense to claim to be anointed unless they approved. Like they "own" God and the Bible. I think they view God as a pet of some sort and when it's hungry or whatever, only the GB can interpret what the pet needs. Idiots.

To Seeker4: I liked the observation that during hard times, JW's or anyone else, don't go to the Hall for help, encouragement, genuine love, or even financial assistance. I thought the early Christians held all their money in common. But the WT tells people to seek food stamps, and to take advantage of social programs. I find this funny since the world is totally under Satan's control, yet the elders send poor, old, and sick people (some with 50 years or more of service) out in the world. They don't loan them money but they publish a whole page on different ways JW's can donate money. I don't think it's loving to approach a survivor at the funeral and ask if the old person left the WT any money or if they didn't, can they make a huge donation. Very sick.
I remember my father telling me that during the Great Depression, bars still did a good business. Even though alcohol was the last thing poor people should be buying, they still drank to ward off their problems.I don't drink but I'd rather get drunk than have any contact with the WTS. It's disgusting how they shamelessly beg for money in the ragazines.

To Lady Lee: That was an extremely well-written post. When I got my degree, I didn't have many options for courses about cults. I had chosen to take extra electives and did Social Gerentology and Child Development, with an emphasis on abuse of any kind. As you know, you can only take so many credits.
